Black Sabbath announce new album, 2012 world tour

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran British rock band Black Sabbath announced on Friday they are reuniting in their original four man line-up for their first new album in 33 years and a 2012 world tour.

Singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward told a news conference at legendary Sunset Strip club Whisky a Go Go they would perform at theDownload Festival in England in June 2012, and then embark on a world tour.

The band, which first got together under the Black Sabbath name in 1969, said they were working on new material for the album for release in the fall of 2012. There is no title as yet but it will be produced by Rick Rubin.

"It's now or never. We are getting along great. Everything's really good," Iommi told reporters at the club where Black Sabbath played their first show in Los Angeles exactly 41 years ago.

"It's like putting on an old glove. It's fantastic," Iommi added.

The four musicians, now all in their 60s, released their last studio album of all original material in 1978 with "Never Say Never."

Rumors of a possible reunion of the English metal band, regarded as one of the pioneers of heavy metal with hits like "Iron Man" and "War Pigs," had been swirling for months.

"It's just time," Osbourne said, noting that the four had tried in the past to work together again. "This time, for some magical reason, we have written about seven or eight songs."

Nothing has been recorded yet and no dates were announced on Friday for the world tour.

The band also announced the launch of its first official website www.blacksabbath.com, and said it would be making its first foray into social media via Facebook and Twitter.

Frontman Osbourne was fired from the band in 1979, leading to a revolving line-up for a number of years. The original foursome reunited for the 1998 release "Reunion" and played again together sporadically for shows in the early 2000s.

Black Sabbath was inducted to the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide.

STONES TO JAM TOGETHER THIS MONTH
Next year will mark the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary but as yet, they haven’t said if they’d be doing anything. Julian Lennon, John Lennon’s son with his first wife, Cynthia, is upset with Paul McCartney because he feels he’s been snubbed when it comes to several recent Beatles events, including Paul’s New York City wedding reception a couple weeks ago. The 48-year-old Julian went on a rant on his Facebook page, noting that he was snubbed at the wedding and its New York counterpart, the anniversary of Vegas’ LOVE production and the premiere of the George Harrison documentary. He demanded to know the truth to why, writing, “I & My Mother will not be eradicated from history… how dare they?” Sources explain that he wasn’t invited to the New York party because organizers thought he was in Italy. • TIDBIT: Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon were both in attendance at the New York wedding reception.
• TIDBIT: McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” for a five-year-old Julian to help comfort him with his parent’s separation. The song was originally called “Hey Jules.”

Madonna "very upset" at new song leak: Manager

LONDON (Reuters) - Madonna's manager Guy Oseary has said the singer was "very upset" that a demo of her new song "Give Me All Your Love" had leaked onto the Internet.

The song, which hit the web on Wednesday and has been listened to by fans around the world, is expected to be the debut track from Madonna's upcoming album, her first studio release since leaving Warner Bros to join Live Nation.

"Madonna told me this morning 'my true fans wouldn't do this'... whoever is responsible for this leak, we ask that you please stop!" Oseary wrote via Twitter.

"Im very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song!!!!!!!!" he added.

Addressing questions tweeted by fans, Oseary said the new album should be finished "in the next month or so," and that it did not yet have a title.

He added that the 53 year-old star, whose hits include "Like a Virgin," "Vogue" and "Hung Up," had penned a "beautiful ballad" for her movie "W.E.."

The picture, Madonna's second feature film as director, follows the life of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee whose relationship with King Edward VIII sparked a constitutional crisis in Britain and led to his abdication.

The film, which had its world premiere at the Venice film festival, hits U.S. theaters in December and British cinemas in January.

Madonna's new record will be her first studio album since 2008's "Hard Candy," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

In 2007, Madonna dropped her long-time music label Warner Bros and signed a deal with concert promoter Live Nation reported to be for 10 years and worth $120 million.

The deal, part of a recent trend in the struggling music industry, involved not only record sales, but also touring and merchandising.

Aretha Franklin Tribute

November 5th brought the Queen of Soul, now Dr. Aretha Franklin to Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame American Music Masters tribute.

We were all thrilled when Aretha appeared onstage being the recipient of Case Western Reserve's Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. She then brought out on stage a large amount of her family, including a sister, grandkids, a son and others. She looked well and has lost quite a bit of weight. She dedicated the night of music to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who was in the front row. She was also given a key to the city and the audience showed their appreciation with much applause and many calling out her name.

The curtain came down and when it went back up there was a full band complete with backup singers. The first performer was Mike Farris (former lead singer of the Screamin Cheetah Wheelies) who showed off his powerhouse voice with renditions of "Mary Don't You Weep" and "The Weight".

The night was filled with various aspects of Aretha's years on the charts. A lot of gospel and some soul. We had been given the info that Aretha would not perform, but we were treated to some great old clips of her from the past; my fave being her on the streets belting out "Chain of Fools". They also had footage of her on the Steve Allen show and a killer clip of her live doing "Dr. Feelgood" which brought the house down. I found it very interesting that the loudest applause of the night was not for any performer on stage but for all her old performances that were just on tape!

Other performers paying tribute to Aretha were Jerry Butler who still killed it, Melinda Doolittle (from American Idol), who did a stellar job but suffered from the sound having the backup singers covering up her superb voice, Carla Cook and Kris Bowers, Ronald Isley, Twinkie Clark, who also played a B3 and might have brought a few people to God that night! Cissy Houston had Bernard Purdie on drums did a couple of gospel songs but she was pretty warbly and seemed frail. The great house band even got to do a number "See Saw" and showed off their talents. Dennis Edwards was up next and what he has lost in vocal ability he made up for in style and heart. Chaka Khan came out and nailed " (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman to the delight of all of us. Chaka got the audience back in the groove again. But she was followed by Ms. Lauryn Hill who brought out her own guitarist and bassist and backup singers. To my ears she gave a somewhat flat and uninspired performance and she seemed to be unhappy with her band as she kept turning around to glare at them. Down went the curtain and The Rock Hall's President and CEO, Terry Stewart advised us to stay put that they had a surprise for us. A short time later the curtain went up and there at the grand piano sat Dr. Franklin, resplendent in a purple gown. She was surrounded by Ronald Isley, Dennis Edwards, Cissy Houston and Jerry Butler and they closed the night with "A Song for You".

So congrats and thanks to the woman who was the first ever inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has charted more Top Forty singles than any other female performers. You gave us another great night of music in downtown Cleveland!

By the way, I don't know if I sent you the link to my "Crystal Ballroom" blog I mentioned. Like I said, it's just sort of the Portland Oregon version of the Avalon Ballroom, and a real cultural experience for a 17 year old from the rural suburbs of Portland. There are photos of Kaleidoscope, Tuli Kupferberg of The Fugs, and even a rare shot of John Hendricks of PH Phactor Jug Band, playing his Gibson J200. There's one shot of Solomon Feldthouse of Kaleidoscope that I have loved for years, and I had no way to share it with all of you until now. The shot of David Lindley talking with Stew Dodge of Melodious Funk is one that I'm really happy to have snapped. I'm talking to people from The Warloks, Family Tree, and many others that played The Crystal in '67 and '68 and the interviews will expand into a book within the next year or so.

David, if you've already posted this link, just disregard this message. It's

TODD RUNDGREN’S LIVE PEFORMANCE OF CLASSIC ALBUM TODD
COMING ON S’MORE/ROCKBEAT ON FEBRUARY 14, 2012
ON DVD AND CD

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — By the time he recorded the eponymous Todd in 1973, Todd Rundgren had charted with such evergreen hits as “Hello It’s Me,” “I Saw the Light” and “We Gotta Get You a Woman,” and had also been dubbed “Rock’s Renaissance Man” by Rolling Stone after releasing studio masterpieces Something/Anything? and A Wizard, A True Star. Todd was a departure; the iconoclastic artist included pop ballads alongside medleys, anthems, and prog rock. The album is universally heralded as one of Rundgren’s best, often compared to Electric Ladyland and Pet Sounds.

In 2010 — 37 years after its original release — Rundgren performed Todd live in its entirety for the first time ever, as part a special limited six-date sold-out tour (the Healing album was also performed, which will be a subsequent stand-alone live DVD/CD release). The September 14 date at Philadelphia’s Keswick Theater, in Rundgren’s hometown, was videotaped and is being released as both a live DVD by S’More Entertainment and a live audio CD by sibling RockBeat Records. Joining him onstage were Utopia’s Kasim Sulton (bass), The Cars’ Greg Hawkes (keyboards), The Tubes’ Prairie Prince (drums), Guitar Player Magazine’s editor Jesse Gress (guitar), Bobby Strickland (sax) and a full choir. Both the DVD and CD will hit retail on February 14, 2012.

In addition to the musical performance, multiple Emmy Award-winning television personality and sportscaster Roy Firestone, whose knowledge of Rundgren’s work is encyclopedic, was enlisted to conduct an extensive in-depth conversation with Rundgren onstage, which will also be packaged with the DVD.

From pop classic “A Dream Goes on Forever” to rocker “Heavy Metal Kids,” from the anthemic “Sons of 1984” to the explosive Blue Eyed Soul of “The Last Ride,” from the industry satire “An Elpee’s Worth of Toons” to the Gilbert & Sullivan homage “The Lord Chancellor’s Nightmare Song,” Todd is a masterful example of Rundgren’s broad musical palette.

About Todd Rundgren:
A Wizard, A True Star. The title of Todd Rundgren’s 1973 solo album aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and, most recently, interactive artist (re-designated TR-i), Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential ’60s cult group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal Something/Anything?, on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him “Rock’s New Wunderkind.” It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as “I Saw the Light,” “Hello It’s Me,” “Can We Still Be Friends,” and “Bang the Drum.”

In 1974, Todd formed Utopia, an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship, and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings includedOops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that, for millions, defined the term “progressive rock.”

Rundgren’s myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall and Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock’s Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp’s 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton’s Up Against It (the screenplay commissioned by the Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also composed the score for several features including Dumb & Dumber as well as for a number of television series, including Pee-wee’s Playhouseand Crime Story.

Early last year Rundgren performed his iconic 1973 album A Wizard, A True Star in concert in its entirety for the first time ever, and recently did the same with a double bill: Todd and Healing. His latest two studio albums are Todd Rundgren’s Johnson, a collection of classic Robert Johnson songs, and reProduction, covers of songs Todd has produced for other artists.

In 1998 Todd debuted his new PatroNet technology, which for the first time allowed fans to subscribe directly to an artist’s musical output via the Internet. This caps a long history of groundbreaking early multimedia “firsts,” including:

• 1978: The first interactive television concert, broadcast live over the Warner/QUBE system in Columbus, Ohio (the home audience chose each song in real time during the concert by voting via QUBE’s 2-way operating system).
• 1978: The first live nationally broadcast stereo radio concert (by microwave), linking 40 cities around the country.
• 1979: The opening of Utopia Video Studios, a multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility. The first project produced by Todd there is Gustav Holst’s The Planets, commissioned by RCA SelectaVision as the first demonstration software for their new videodisc format.
• 1980: Creation of the first color graphics tablet, which was licensed to Apple and released as the Utopia Graphics Tablet.
• 1981: Time Heals, the first music video to utilize state-of-the-art compositing of live action and computer graphics (produced and directed by Todd), becomes the second video to be played on MTV (after Video Killed the Radio Star).
• 1982: The first live national cablecast of a rock concert (on the USA Network), simulcast in stereo to over 120 radio stations.
• 1982: The first two commercially released music videos, one of which was nominated for the first-ever Grammy awarded for “Best Short Form Video” in 1983.
• 1992: The release of No World Order, the world’s first interactive record album on CD-i. Also the first commercially available music downloads via CompuServe.
• 1994: The release of The Individualist, the world’s first full-length Enhanced CD.
• 1995: The world’s first interactive concert tour.
• 1998: Launches PatroNet, the world’s first direct artist subscription service.

The Hollies new DVD "Look Through Any Window (1963-1975)", a short review by SH..

I know there are several threads on this kicking around here but you can never have enough Hollies threads.

The first Hollies song I ever heard was BUS STOP, it was a major hit here in LA during the British Invasion. The next one I remember was STOP STOP STOP which I liked well enough to buy the Imperial 45. My buddy loved CARRIE ANNE and he had more Hollies than I did as a kid, his older brother having a few of their USA albums in bad fake stereo. One of the first British Import LP's we bought at Lewin's Record Paradise in Hollywood (pooling our allowance money) was the newly issued Parlophone stereo HOLLIES GREATEST HITS LP. Mr. Lewin told us that all the songs (like BUS STOP) were in true stereo. Bless that old man, wish he was around today, I'd shake his hand. We were amazed to hear all the songs in true stereo for the first time (this was 1968) and I remember on his crappy little Magnavox fold-out stereo how amazed we were to hear some of these songs we had never heard before like STAY, JUST ONE LOOK, I CAN'T LET GO, etc...

So, I've been a fan of the Hollies since I was a kid.

In the CD era of course I grabbed all the Hollies I could find, especially the stuff in the late 1980s and early 90's before Abbey Road Mastering discovered No-Noise. I play Hollies stuff all the time, they don't sound old or dated to me at all..

And just a few years ago on a lark I bought a minty Parlophone 45 of ON A CAROUSEL and was astounded at the sound quality and the fantastic mono mix which had only heard on AM radio way back when. Well, I quickly grabbed all the British Parlophone 45's I could find, having come full circle with my Hollies collecting..

This new DVD (part of the "BRITISH INVASION" series (see my earlier reviews) is something that I really wanted to watch. So, happily I received my gratis copy today, courtesy of the DVD's director David Peck of Reelin' In The Years Productions. Thankfully Eagle Rock Entertainment decided to distribute this worthy DVD (it was in doubt if this would even be released for a while) and let me just say that all music lovers should grab this while they can. This is a keeper for your collection, just as important as your favorite Hollies' LP or Parlophone 45..

David didn't ask me to write a review, didn't even mention it but I am compelled to plug this thing and I'm gonna. It's essential if you care for that era or its music.

I popped the DVD in my machine late this afternoon and was amazed at the footage, sat spellbound and when I looked up, 185 minutes had passed by and it was night outside. It seemed like a dream when it was over, couldn't believe I blocked everything else in the world out, so eagerly did I devour this great music documentary.

You'll see 22 great Hollies performances, you'll hear insights from the band members, you'll see old home movies, you'll remember favorite songs and go "Oh, that was the Hollies, gee they had more hits than I remember" and so on..

I'm usually not a fan of modern interviews with band members (they tend to focus on past wrongs and not the music) but these interviews were VERY interesting. When Nash talks about leaving the Hollies and the UK on December 8, 1968 and two days later he was in the studio in Los Angeles with Stills and Crosby it gave me quite a jolt being that I'm working on mastering that first CS&N album right at this time. For me watching this DVD was like a bridge between two musical worlds.

At any rate, the Hollies seem like nice guys, I've met several of them before but it was nice having all of this info and footage and music all in one place for a change, and a few of these music clips I've never seen in my life and wow, what a thrill, trust me.

At any rate, grab this. And soon. Nothing stays in print forever, dudes. I have spoken!

105 MINUTES FROM LEGENDARY 1961 ANTIBES JAZZ FESTIVAL CONCERTS DISCOVERED!

“Seeing and hearing Ray perform so brilliantly 50 years ago in France, is an inspiration and reminds us just how gifted this man was and what an amazing and special talent he had. Ray Charles - Live In France 1961 will premiered at a special screening presented by the American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles on October 20th. The screening was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ray Charles biographer David Ritz that that included director David Peck, Tom Gulotta, one of the film’s producers Ray Charles catalog authority James Austin, Ivan Hoffman of the Ray Charles Foundation and Rob Bowman, Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Toronto’s York University, whose incisive liner notes are part of the Ray Charles - Live In France 1961 package.

Reelin’ In the Years has produced some of the most highly-regarded anthology DVD series in music history including the four-volume, GRAMMY-nominated American Folk Blues Festival series, the multi-platinum selling Definitive Motown series (Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles), The British Invasion series and the award-winning Jazz Icons series. Today in Pink Floyd History? There’s An App For That

Pink Floyd fans who own the iPhone and iPad have a new companion for their favorite prog-rock band. This Day in Music Apps announced their latest music trivia app this week, geared entirely toward Roger Waters, David Gilmour & Co. and their vast, vivid history.

The company describes the app, which hits the iTunes app store on Monday, November 14, simply as “the ultimate accompaniment to the ultimate band.” It will include 366 days of trivia based on each current day of the year, plus over 100 photos, 200 trivia questions, and a free “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” ringtone. Many of these can be previewed with the official screengrabs the company provided.

Users will also be treated to a detailed guide to each studio track Pink Floyd ever released – 167 by their count.

And, in case you don’t already own their entire catalog, the app will let you know what music you’re missing from your library in addition to play the songs you already have.

Unfortunately for owners of anything other than the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, the app is only available for Apple users at this time. But perhaps This Day in Music Apps is already working toward making their apps available for users of any smartphone platform.

For 30 years, from October 1962 through to May 1992, The Carson Show was one of the most important showcases in America for comedians, actors, sports figures, politicians, and music artists. Managed and administered by The Carson Entertainment Group, the vast program archives contain over 3,500 hours of footage across nearly 2,500 episodes. Reelin’ In The Years Productions will be bringing its vast experience in the field of music footage licensing to market the music performances to a wider clientele.

Reelin’ In The Years Productions (RITY), founded in 1992 by David Peck, represents over 35 television stations and independent archives in Europe, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. Representing a combined library of over 20,000 hours of music footage spanning seven decades, RITY has become a world leader in placing music footage clips in movies, television, digital/online media, DVDs and CDs. Jeff Sotzing President of Carson Entertainment stated,“ David Peck and his staff have such a tremendous knowledge and respect for the music contained in the body of The Carson Show library that we thought the fit would be a natural. We look forward to a long and successful relationship."

Commenting on the Carson archive, Reelin’ In The Years president David Peck stated, “Representing the performances and interviews from the musical guests on The Carson Show is truly an honor, the gravity of which is hard to convey. Of course, the archive is one of the most prestigious in all of television, and the holdings are truly incredible, featuring many unique and one-of-a-kind performances. Also, unlike many other programs from this time period where the bulk of the performances were lip-synched, all of the Carson performances are live.“

The Johnny Carson archive features a “who’s who" of music superstars from the 60’s to the 90’s. Just a few of the artists who appeared on the program include Paul McCartney, James Brown, Madonna, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, and Stevie Ray Vaughan in one of his final TV appearances before his passing. In addition to legendary R&B, Soul, & Rock and Pop artists, the archive also includes a wide spectrum of many of the greatest country artists of the day. From Johnny Cash to Randy Travis, from Dolly Parton to The Judds, from George Jones to Garth Brooks, the archive is a veritable hall of fame in terms of live country performances.

Reelin' In The Years Productions LLC is the world’s largest music footage archive. In addition, the company has Directed and Produced over 70 DVDs including the Grammy®-nominated The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1969 series. JAZZ ICONS® SERIES 5 SET FOR RELEASE NEXT MONTH THROUGH MOSAIC RECORDS:

JOHN COLTRANE, THELONIOUS MONK, RAHSAAN ROLAND KIRK, JOHNNY GRIFFIN, FREDDIE HUBBARD AND ART BLAKEY FILMED AT THE HEIGHT OF THEIR POWERS, LIVE IN FRANCE

The highly anticipated fifth series of Jazz Icons® DVD releases will be available next month as a six disc set available exclusively through Mosaic Records (www.mosaicrecords.com). Produced by Reelin’ In The Years Productions, the latest in the much lauded ongoing series includes six titles, all of which were filmed in France from the late 1950s through the early 1970s featuring performances from jazz giants John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

The upcoming releases can be ordered now from Mosaic (www.mosaicrecords.com) which will start shipping sets on November 1. Reelin’ In The Years President David Peck who started the series five years ago noted, “We’re delighted to be partnering with Mosaic for the fifth Jazz Icons Series. Jazz Icons releases are noted for the artistry they reflect as well as stunning audio and video quality. The same can be said for Mosaic’s work over the years, underscoring just how appropriate this alliance is for us. The brilliance of these performances makes them a must for any serious jazz collector and Mosaic has long been a destination for those same serious collectors.” The new series brings to 36 the total number of titles released under the Jazz Icons banner.

The new series features brilliant full-length concert performances from a virtual pantheon of mid-century jazz legends. Each of the releases was painstakingly transferred from the original master and each feature rare performances that have never been officially released on home video, some of which were never broadcast. Each DVD was produced with the full support and cooperation of the artists or their estates and includes a 12-page booklet with an essay written by an authoritative jazz historian as well as rare and unseen photos.

The six releases that comprise Jazz Icons Series 5 are the result of a new alliance between Reelin’ In The Years Productions and France’s Ina (Institut National de l’Audiovisuel, www.ina.fr), one of Europe’s most important footage archives. RITY projects that Ina’s vast, well-documented, archive will be the source of music footage for many more projects of this caliber going forward.

The set’s component titles include John Coltrane - Live In France 1965, filmed at the Antibes Jazz Festival on July 26th and 27th of that year. Coltrane’s quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones was at the peak of its powers when they performed “A Love Supreme,” the first and only public performance of the masterpiece. The DVD opens with "Naima," a searingly intense "Ascension" and "Impressions," while the only surviving footage from A Love Supreme suite close out this historic 52-minute film. Liner notes are by David Liebman, National Endowment For The Arts Jazz Masters Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers - Live In France 1959 was shot at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and is notable for the fact that it marked the debut of two new members of the group: Wayne Shorter, tenor sax, whose sound and conception would forever change the sonic landscape of the band and Walter Davis Jr., who had as much drive on the piano as Blakey had on his drums. The band featured Lee Morgan on trumpet and Jymie Merritt on bass all of whom are absolutely on fire throughout this 83-minute concert. Bob Blumental’s insightful liner notes are included.

Thelonious Monk- Live In France 1969 was filmed at ORTF TV Studio in Paris in December and spotlights one of the most compelling performances of Monk’s career. Just Monk, a grand piano and two cameras — no audience, no sidemen, no emcee, no clock-watching stage manager, no set list, no distractions for 65 minutes of pure musical genius The result was an astonishingly intimate and revealing portrait of a man and his music. Monk sits at the piano and plays whatever occurs to him. In this case, it was nine originals and two of his favorite standards. The freedom of playing unaccompanied allows Monk to give each composition fascinating new twists and variations. The viewer can virtually see his mind at work. Liner notes are by pianist/composer Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus.

Johnny Griffin - Live In France 1971 includes both a live performance by the tenor virtuoso at Jazz Festival de Châteauvallon on August 29, 1971 as well as a TV studio concert shot in Châteauvallon a few weeks earlier. Griffin’s quartet — Art Taylor, drums, Vince Benedetti, piano, and Alby Culliaz on bass — is joined on stage by guest artist Dizzy Gillespie on “Hot House” and “A Night In Tunisia” with the rest of the set devoted to bebop classics and four of Griffin’s best known originals. René Urtreger was the pianist for the TV portion of the program. Trumpeter, publisher and educator Don Sickler wrote the liner notes for the release.

Freddie Hubbard - Live In France 1973 documents the March day when the incendiary trumpet master took his group — Junior Cook on sax and flute, George Cables on piano, Kent Brinkley, bass and drummer Michael Carvin — to ORTF TV Studio in Paris and knocked out a powerful set of his greatest compositions of the period: “Straight Life," "Intrepid Fox" and "First Light." In contrast to the highly produced albums Hubbard release on the CTI label in that era, he performed that same repertoire a more direct, straight-ahead jazz style. Liner notes are by veteran jazz writer Neil Tesser.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Live In France 1972 is a 73-minute concert at the Grand Palais in Paris performed on March 8, 1972. With excellent support from his Vibration Society (Ron Burton, Henry Pearson, Richie Goldberg and Joe Texidor), this concert is a perfect example of Kirk's unique genius. It features classics from Coltrane to Ellington and ends poignantly with two of Kirk’s most celebrated and powerful compositions: "Volunteered Slavery" and "The Inflated Tear." Often playing two and three reed instruments simultaneously with amazing skill, he was a living encyclopedia of jazz and an ever-thinking force of energy who swept the audience up into his orbit. Kirk biographer John Kruth wrote the scholarly and insightful notes that are included.

THE dB’s TO RELEASE NEW SONG

“Revolution of the Mind” MP3 brings together original members Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Will Rigby and Gene Holder as they target album release for 2012.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The dB's will release a new song, "Revolution of the Mind," for free download at <http://www.thedbs.com>. The high-energy rock track was recorded by Peter Holsapple, Gene Holder, Will Rigby, and Chris Stamey during sessions for the band's new album, Falling Off the Sky, due in spring of 2012, and includes additional "revolutionary" guitar by Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo) and background vocals by Django Haskins (The Old Ceremony). “The MC5 played in our hometown of Winston-Salem, NC, in 1971,” Stamey related, with a nod to the timely track’s sonic and political inspiration, “and none of us were ever the same again.”

The band is best known for its critically hailed proto-indie pop 80s albums Stands for deciBels and Repercussion. Due to conflicting geography, work and tour schedules, the reunited quartet has taken its time but has finally completed the new album, “Falling Off the Sky.” It will be worth the wait. But for now, the nonalbum track “Revolution of the Mind” should serve as an appetizer.

Two NC-based artists have been inspired by recent events to create videos for the song, also available from the band's site: one by Jerry Stifelman of Creato Destructo Imagery and the other by Greg Parsons (editor) and Mike Allen (director).

KINKY FRIEDMAN ANNOUNCES
HANUKKAH TOUR OF 2011

The Jewish troubadour: lighting candles for America, city by city.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Kinkster is back on the road this holiday season with his Hanukkah Tour of 2011. Taking time off from finishing up a book with Billy Bob Thornton and formulating one with Willie Nelson, Kinky Friedman will visit 14 cities in the Midwest, West and Southwest, starting November 29. In addition, the tour is bookended with two fundraisers in Salado, TX, for the Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, one on November 26th featuring BJ Thomas (with Kinky as host), and the other on December 17 with Rodney Crowell and Billy Joe Shaver (Kinky will perform a full show on this one).

Like any good Jewish troubadour, Kinky will be selling his latest books, hawking hilarious new tour posters and touting the impending arrival of the kinkiest of new Kinky products, high-grade, top-shelf tequila. Perhaps more importantly, Kinky is finally stepping into the 21st century with the ultra new Kinky Nano, which contains more than 200 of his songs, as well as snatches from his extraordinary live performances. He will also have with him the just-as-exciting Kinky Jump Drive, which holds three complete Kinky Friedman audio books (all read by Kinky himself). Kinky fans well know of Kinky’s abhorrence of computers and the Internet — yes, he still writes on a portable typewriter — but he has firmly committed to co-existing with the 21st century. For those who, like the Kinkster, still prefer curling up with a real book, Kinky will also be carrying . . . real books.

To promote and celebrate Hanukkah, the tour, and all these new products, look for a new Kinky “single” to be released to radio in front of the holidays, a hysterical and poignant reading from one of the audio books. As he has proven with recent such releases, radio listeners still love a good laugh every now and then. And, with Kinky doing the reading, it’s all music to the ears.

On the tour, Kinky will be performing solo, singing all the tunes for which he is famed, including “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore,” and “Ride ’Em Jewboy,” and, naturally, he will continue his long-running commentary on current politics and the state of the union, as well as give a book reading. An official signing party will occur after each performance. Kinky vows he “will sign anything but bad legislation.” Test him on this.

As thousand of folks have discovered or rediscovered over his last tours, Kinky Friedman is the real deal, an amazing performer, and one of America's brightest literary lights. Kinky Friedman is the troubadour of our times.

HAUNTING, HYPNOTIC GROOVES FROM
ICONOCLASTIC TRANCE BLUESMAN OTIS TAYLOR

‘Otis Taylor’s Contraband’ features Cassie Taylor, Larry Thompson, Anne Harris, Jon Paul Johnson, Chuck Campbell, Ron Miles, The Sheryl Renee Choir and more

BOULDER, Colo. — Otis Taylor isn’t defined by any single category. A musical alchemist and a true innovator, Taylor has never been afraid to experiment beyond the blues tradition. He’s a master craftsman who has created his own signature “trance blues” style by melding haunting guitar and banjo work, syncopated rhythms and a combination of gruff vocals, shouts and yells with raw passion.

“When I sing, I just do what I do,” Taylor says. “Whatever comes out — that’s the way I leave it. And if I make a mistake, I leave it in. I like to keep the emotion.” Otis Taylor’s Contraband is evidence of that. Set for release February 13, 2012, on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group, Taylor’s new album finds the artist on familiar thematic terrain: love, social injustices, personal demons and war.

The album takes its title from an article that appeared in the May/June 2011 issue of Preservation Magazine about runaway slaves who during the American Civil War escaped to the Union lines at Fort Monroe, Va.. Known as “contraband,” they lived in camps where conditions were often worse than life on the plantation.

Otis Taylor’s Contraband isn’t just speaking to the African American experience, but to the entire human experience. “I’m not really a protest singer or even a very political person,” says Taylor. “I just try to tell an interesting story and let people interpret it as they wish.”

On Otis Taylor’s Contraband, the iconoclastic bluesman is reunited with several longtime collaborators including the supple-toned Ron Miles on cornet; pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell from American Sacred Steel gospel group the Campbell Brothers; djembe player Fara Tolno, a master drummer born in Guinea, West Africa; fiddler Anne Harris from Chicago, Ill.; and the Sheryl Renee Choir. Bass is handled by Taylor’s daughter Cassie and Todd Edmunds. Rounding out the band are Jon Paul Johnson on guitar, Brian Juan on organ, and Larry Thompson, former house drummer for Colorado’s world-renowned Caribou Ranch recording studio.

The recording took an ominous turn in April 2010 when Taylor became victim of a serious illness and had to undergo major surgery. “I found out that I had a cyst connected to my liver and my spine,” he says. “I’ve always had a bad back, but the cyst was as big as a softball and it was pushing on the nerves in my spine. It was a pretty serious thing. So I went into the studio three days before the operation and recorded seven acoustic songs . . . just in case. If you listen to parts of the album carefully, you can tell I was in excruciating pain.”

Otis Taylor’s Contraband offers 14 compelling originals. “The Devil’s Gonna Lie,” a rousing showcase for the entire band, opens the album with Taylor’s trademark howls and a demonic laugh. As he writes in the liner notes, “When there is peace, the devil wants war. When there is love, the devil wants hate.” On “Yell Your Name,” one of the project’s original seven acoustic tunes, Taylor sings about a man wants his lover to come back.

The insistent rhythm of another acoustic love song, “Look to the Side” spotlights the distinctive sound of Taylor’s specially made electric banjo. Of the foot-tapping “Romans Had Their Way,” he says, “I wrote this song in the ’60s when I was a kid, listening to groups like the Kinks. This is the only old song on the album — all the rest are new.”

A stark meditation on race, “Blind Piano Teacher” tells the story of a young black piano teacher who lives with an older white man, while a man begs a woman for compassion on “Banjo Boogie Blues.”

With its swirling guitars and hypnotic lyrics, “Contraband Blues,” a song about Civil War slaves who were held by the Union Army as contraband (or captured property), is the powerful centerpiece to the album. “During the Civil War, slaves were free, but not as people,” Taylor says. “We don’t usually think of people as contraband, but this is about treating humans as animals.”

The bleak and haunting “Open These Bars” — the longest song on the album — refers to the Jim Crow years in the South, when a black man could be lynched for just looking at a white woman. On “Yellow Car, Yellow Dog,” a poor man wishes he had money and could win the love of a woman. Taylor calls this “one of my more poetic songs.”

“Never Been To Africa” is the simmering tale of a black soldier who’s fought all over the world in World War I, but has never seen Africa. There’s desperation in Taylor’s voice when he sings “Cold sweat running down my leg, I can feel the gas coming across my face, I know I don’t believe in war, but I’ll fight anyway.”

On the final track, “I Can See You’re Lying,” Taylor captures the energy and emotion of romance and relationships perfectly. “It’s another one of my dark, twisted love songs,” he says.

By taking blues music as an art form to a higher level altogether, Otis Taylor’s Contraband is both subtle and challenging. Another thought-provoking entry in his canon, Taylor’s eighth Telarc album is the follow up to Clovis People, Vol. 3, released in May 2010.

“It’s all a balancing act,” Taylor says. “A new album has to be different, but you can’t be too different. It has to be the same, but not exactly the same. It’s like a riddle.”

The line-up includes world-renowned guitarist Bob “Steady Rollin’” Margolin, banjo virtuoso Tony Trischka, multi-instrumentalist Don Vappie, bassist George Porter Jr., guitarist/vocalist Standing Bear and Cassie Taylor, among others.
