My short brief brush with Greatness!
- Al Kooper

I wrote the below missive to Bob Lefsetz Letters column early on Setember 11th 2009
Bob writes a blog that EVERYONE in the music business reads and responds to

Bob
I write to you because you can reach the people that should be concerned with the latest iTune fiasco.
I have been downloading from iTunes since 2003 when I basically stopped buying CDs. In the first year pf downloading, I spent 62% percent less than the year before in acquiring music I liked. One of the big bonuses of iTunes was an alphabetized list of every single release on each Tuesday regardless of genre. As far as I know, there is nowhere else that has a list like that (as thorough) every Tuesday, much less where you can instantly download anything off that list instantly.
Every Tuesday, I would be there listening for hours to ALL sorts of musics and downloading MANY great artists that nobody else seems to know about. I would also pick the best stuff and display it on my website so
others didn't have to endure the hours I spent finding these gems.
Well, after six wonderful years, the door has been unceremoniously SHUT on that list as of this past Tuesday
September 8th.
It is a grievous mistake financially for iTunes and a slap in the face to people like me who have downloaded over 6,000 tracks from them since 2003. The worst part is they never announce shit like that, they just stab you in the back. This was an incredible arena for new music:
I discovered myriad acts like Deerhoof, Field Music, Hella, Scale The Summit, Sarah Siskind, Unbunny, Jem, The Veronicas, Maimou, Fruit Bats, Weather, Von Frickle, Shimmer, Willy Porter and hundreds more that I NEVER WOULD HAVE HEARD without that list. It replaced the radio for me instantly- in fact it made me wanna DJ so I could spread the word, but I don't know how to get a job like that
I look at this as the beginning of the end for iTunes. They destroyed one of the greatest things they brought to the consumer in the name of what ?? Higher prices for un-DRM tracks ? NO INFO about ANY of these tracks (thank the Lord for Google) and arms-length from EVERYBODY.
If anybody else shares this loss with me, please vent at the below URL where the Jobsians say to go vent:

"I encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit your comments as this is the best way to send Apple your concerns about any changes to the iTunes Store:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html"

This from Itunes support which doesn't

Thanks for your support however, Bob

Bob Dylan blowin' in the bagpipes

LONDON (Reuters) - Bob Dylan, forever looking for a new road to walk down, has taken up the bagpipes.
The 70-year-old singer bought a set of traditional Scottish pipes while in Glasgow to play two concerts this weekend, a spokesperson for the National Piping Center said.
Dylan did not turn up at the centre's shop himself but sent a representative to pick them up.
"He's always wanted to learn," the spokesperson told Reuters. "It's a lovely sound when they are played well, and something to be appreciated."
Dylan chose a set of R.G. Hardie pipes -- one of the best makes -- in the Piping Centre's tartan along with a starter package including a chanter and a learning manual. She declined to say how much he paid.
Dylan has often shown an affection for things Scottish. He has cited national poet Robert Burns as a big influence, has an honorary degree from St. Andrews University in Fife, and a number of his songs are rooted in Scottish folk tunes, including "The Times They Are A-Changing."
In a 1997 song "Highlands" he sang: "My heart's in the Highlands wherever I roam, that's where I'll be when I get called home."
But for those who wince at the thought of Dylan's raspy voice combining with the skirl of the pipes, it might a case of "There must be some way out of here."

TORK TALKS ABOUT MONKEES TOUR CANCELLATION
In August, the Monkees called off their tour with little explanation but now, bassist Peter Tork is opening up about what caused the cancellation. The rocker told Rolling Stone, “There were some business affairs that couldn’t be coordinated correctly. We hit a glitch and there was just this weird dislocation at one point. I can’t say anything more without getting into the stuff that we have to keep down. We need to work on this stuff outside the public eye.” Interesting. As for if he, Micky Dolenz and Davey Jones will ever tour again, Peter put the chances at 50/50. Read more at RollingStone.com.

The singer told England’s Daily Express, “I think we would’ve mellowed to the point where we would’ve said, ‘Come on, let’s do it.’” Paul went on to say, “It would’ve been great, but I’m not a great believer in ‘What if?’ You can’t do it, but I suppose it’s nice to speculate.” Read more at Express.co.uk.

ROCKERS PAY TRIBUTE TO STEVE JOBS

• Twisted Sister singer Dee Snider: “Thank you, Steve Jobs. You rocked our world… and you never played a note.”
• Sebastian Bach: “RIP, Steve Jobs. Thanks for allowing me to put my whole CD collection in my pocket. You have made air travel a lot more fun, among other things.
• Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx: “RIP Steve Jobs. Steve was of his era what Thomas Edison was to the beginning of the 20th century. You made all our lives a better place.”
• Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee: “RIP Mr. Jobs! Excuse me… Mr. Incredible!”
• Guns N’ Roses: “When people say it’s not about the possessions but how you’re remembered – they are talking about people like Steve Jobs. RIP.”
• Chickenfoot guitarist Joe Satriani: “R.I.P. Steve Jobs. I bet you’re busy right now revolutionizing and redesigning the afterlife for all of us to enjoy when our time comes.”
• Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum: “Rest in peace, Steve Jobs. The visionary master.”
• Bret Michaels: “First, I must express my deepest condolences to Steve’s wife, Laurene, his family and friends. I can only thank Steve for his innovation, inspiration and creativity while touching all of our lives in some way, shape or form.”
• Former Kiss member Bruce Kulick: “For me, Steve Jobs’ vision as a creator and head of Apple has had a huge impact on my life. I have always said that the Apple products I am addicted to are vital to my business, and high on the list of things I use for entertainment value. His genius will never be forgotten, and his devices have made me feel like I live in a time of wonderful sci-fi tools that have made all our lives more enjoyable.”

DARYL HALL TALKS ABOUT INTERESTING NEW TOUR
Daryl Hall’s web show, Live from Daryl’s House, where he collaborates with another artist, has been picked up and is now in syndication on TV. Meanwhile, he recently released his latest solo album, Laughing Down Crying, and he is planning on touring behind it. When we he does hit the road, he told us he’ll be incorporating Live from Daryl’s House in his shows.
(Cut #1) “I’m probably going to do shows on their own as solo shows but also solo shows within a larger context of a Live from Daryl’s live show. There’s talk of various things. There might be what I like to call Darylpalooza because it’s a group of guests all doing their thing and then all getting together at the end and doing a big, giant Daryl’s House and that’s gonna happen next year.”

Daryl went on to describe another kind of show he has done and will continue doing.
(Cut #2) “I’m also going to be doing ones, which I’ve already started doing by the way, of doing me and one other guest artist and sort of taking a concept of Live from Daryl’s House and trying, well not try, I’ve done it already, to bring that sort of loose, fly-on-the-wall audience experience, little cooking, little all that, into a performance in front of people.”

Stay up to date with the singer and learn about where you can see his show at LiveFromDarylsHouse.com. Also, be sure to pick up Daryl’s new album, Laughing Down Crying, today.
• TIDBIT: Before beginning his music career, Daryl was a paperboy and a waiter.

WOULD NICK MASON CONSIDER DOING A SUPERGROUP?
Last week, Pink Floyd re-issued Dark Side of the Moon as part of the Why Pink Floyd campaign, which sees group’s albums getting re-released in various packages, some of which include DVDs and memorabilia. Well fans seemed to like it as the Dark Side re-issue landed at number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 26-thousand copies. So does the success make drummer Nick Mason want to get back in the business and perhaps start a supergroup? Here’s what he told us.

(Cut #4) “No. I think after some 40-odd years with one band, that’s probably quite enough without trying to find another set of monsters and maniacs to work with.”

Fans will just have to enjoy Nick’s music with Pink Floyd as more re-issues come out. Learn about the campaign at WhyPinkFloyd.com.
• TIDBIT: Dark Side of the Moon made it to the number one spot on the Billboard chart when it first came out but, but only stayed at the top of the chart for a week. However, it remained in the top 200 for an amazing 741 weeks. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time.

U2 RELEASE ACHTUNG BABY REISSUE TRACKLIST, TALK “ONE”
U2 will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their Achtung Baby album next month with a very special reissue and repackaging of the record. The guys just released the tracklist for their reissue of Achtung Baby, which comes out on November 1st, so be sure to check it out now at U2.com.

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG TO APPEAR ON NURSE JACKIE
It seems Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has really caught the acting bug. The singer, who finished up a role as “St. Jimmy” in the band’s American Idiot Broadway musical earlier this year, is set to appear on the Showtime series Nurse Jackie in 2012. The band also has a new album in the works for 2012 and Armstrong told us they are always thinking ahead (See Related Cut #9). Just in from Harry Duncan...

Marv Tarplin, a stone cold genius of a Motown songwriter, session and touring guitarist and full member of the Miracles is gone.

You'll have the essence of Marv Tarplin if you think about the songs that he wrote, with and for whom he wrote these great songs and his brilliant "less is more" guitar playing.

Thanks to Tom Tom Washington for the heads up.

Worth taking the time to read the Guardian (UK) obit.

"..and now something for the youngsters out there in our audience and watching at home.."

A visual reminder that The Ed Sullivan Show Starring The Rolling Stones is released this week and that the deluxe version will be out November 1st. Speaking of important dates, October 25th marks the 47th anniversary of the band's very first appearance "right here on our stage."

When these screen captures showed up from SOFA Entertainment, producer of the Stones Sullivan sets and of the recently released Motown Ed Sullivan titles (Supremes, Temptations and Motown Gold), we just had to share them.

Watch the trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7JEGcWGbKE and read about the full content of these sets below the photos.

The Ed Sullivan Show, the legendary live Sunday night variety show with a viewership of more than 35 million, was the unwitting catalyst that helped ignite music’s British Invasion. That musical assault kicked off a new sound that would change the world forever. One of the most significant and enduring forces in that invasion was a group of young upstarts who called themselves the “Rolling Stones.” They offered their own brand of gritty, rhythm and blues-inflected, down-and-dirty rock ’n’ roll that would eventually conquer the music world, making them one of the all-time greatest bands in history. In fact, they came to be universally known as “The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”
The Rolling Stones, the bad boys of rock ’n’ roll, first performed on The Ed Sullivan Show, as part of their introduction to the American public in 1964. The Ed Sullivan Show gave the Rolling Stones a national platform by broadcasting them into millions of living rooms across America and, in turn, helped catapult them to the top of the music charts.

On October 4, 2011, SOFA Entertainment presents The Ed Sullivan Show Starring The Rolling Stones, (2 DVDs) that includes four Ed Sullivan Show episodes, and on November 1, 2011, the deluxe version of The Ed Sullivan Show Starring The Rolling Stones (2 DVDs) featuring all 6 episodes of The Ed Sullivan Show, highlighting the complete Rolling Stones’ appearances, including 17 of their live performances -- many of their greatest hits.

Each episode is fully restored and presented in its historical entirety, complete with all of the other performers as well as the original commercials. For the first time, these historic shows featuring classic Rolling Stones’ performances will be officially available in a single collection.

The Ed Sullivan Show Starring The Rolling Stones - 2-DVD set features 4 full episodes starring the Rolling Stones and includes:

The Rolling Stones making their triumphant return to the Ed Sullivan stage on May 2, 1965, performing the an early original composition by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards - the Top 10 hit “The Last Time”; a rendition of the Willie Dixon blues classic “Little Red Rooster”; a cover of Solomon Burke’s “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love”; and closing out the show -- the rarely performed instrumental homage to Chess Records, “2120 South Michigan Avenue.”

Their February 13, 1966, Ed Sullivan Show appearance, presented in gorgeous CBS color, performing their No. 1 smash hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” against a backdrop of screaming fans and a touching rendition of their hit “As Tears Go By.” Performed as a duet, the song features the vocals of Mick Jagger and the soft chords of Keith Richards’ acoustic guitar. They end this Sullivan appearance with their newest hit, the manic “19th Nervous Breakdown.”

The Rolling Stones returning to the Ed Sullivan stage on September 11,1966, after being chased by a mob of fans down Broadway following the dress rehearsal, with a unique performance of their No. 1 hit “Paint It, Black” with Brian Jones sitting and playing the signature riff on his sitar; their hit “Lady Jane,” featuring Jones on dulcimer as the band showcases their versatility by closing the show with their smash Top 10 hit “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows?”

The Rolling Stones final appearance on the Ed Sullivan stage with founding member Brian Jones was on January 15, 1967, performing their No. 1 hit “Ruby Tuesday” which was followed by their now historic version of “Let’s Spend The Night Together” with the lyrics changed to, “Let’s Spend Some Time Together” by CBS network’s standards and practices department. This was a memorable moment of TV censorship. In true Stones’ fashion, the chorus is defiantly delivered with a sarcastic roll of Mick Jagger’s eyes as he looks into the camera and lets the audience at home know he’s fully aware of the absurdity of the situation.

Other highlights include:

Tom Jones singing “Watcha Gonna Do When Your Baby Leaves You.”

The legendary Louis Armstrong performing “Cabaret.”

Petula Clark giving us “Elusive Butterfly” and “Color My World.”

The Ed Sullivan Show Starring The Rolling Stones (DELUXE EDITION) - features 6 full episodes starring the Rolling Stones and, in addition to the four shows above, includes:

The Rolling Stones’ very first appearance on October 25, 1964, with the band whipping the audience into a frenzy with the Chuck Berry classic “Around and Around,” and their Top 10 hit, “Time Is On My Side.” This show captures the excitement and hysteria of their fans in the Sullivan Theater as they nearly drown out the Rolling Stones’ performances. The screams lasted throughout the entire performance, continuing after they finished and the curtain had dropped with Sullivan’s futile attempts to calm the crazed teenage crowd as he tries to say a few words to Mick.

Their November 23, 1969, appearance which marked their final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show where the band introduced their newest member, guitarist Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones had left the band was soon thereafter found dead in his swimming pool. The Stones performed “Gimme Shelter,” a song that summed up the tumultuous period of the late ’60s; the Robert Johnson blues classic, “Love In Vain” and their latest No. 1 hit, “Honky Tonk Women.”

Additional highlights on this collection include:

Standup comedians Phyllis Diller, Stiller & Meara (featuring Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara), Robert Klein and Rodney Dangerfield doing one of his classic “I Don’t Get No Respect” routines.

Two routines by Jim Henson’s Muppets.

The legendary Ella Fitzgerald performing “You’d Better Love Me” and “Open Your Window .”

Bonus material - 24 page booklet featuring lines notes, rare documents, contracts and photos. Also, included in each Deluxe Collector's Edition set is a 1966 replica ticket for entry to The Ed Sullivan Show.

The Ed Sullivan Show changed the landscape of American television and music history. Sullivan’s stage was home to the most iconic performances by groundbreaking artists, bringing people and families together every Sunday evening. It is the longest-running primetime variety show in TV history, and an institution in American pop culture.

Andrew Solt, executive producer of these releases and president of SOFA Entertainment, also produced “25 x 5: The Continuing Adventures of The Rolling Stones,” documenting the band’s phenomenal career from the earliest days through their “Steel Wheels” tour (1989-1990).

ZZ TOP HYPERACTIVE ON MULTIPLE FRONTS:
NEW ALBUM, LA GRANGE FEST, TRIBUTE ALBUM KEEPING “THAT LITTLE OL’ BAND FROM TEXAS” IN THE FOREFRONT

ZZ TOP, the band whose original line-up has been intact longer than any other major rock group’s -- Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard enjoying 4 decades together – are riding the waves on a variety of fronts that continue to propel the iconic band’s vitality and resonance.

The band is putting the finishing touches on yet another album, as yet titled, which Billy Gibbons and producer Rick Rubin have been working on together for the past ten months. One of the album songs, “Flyin’ High,” was previewed on the Soyuz spacecraft en route to the International Space Station earlier this year. The album, the band’s fifteenth studio album and first from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in eight years, will be out through American Recordings/Columbia Records who are projecting a release date this coming spring.

This month also sees the launch of ZZ TOP’s La Grange Fest in Austin, TX. It’s a ZZ Top- hosted music festival set for Saturday, October 22 at Austin’s The Backyard. Featured with ZZ Top are Lynyrd Skynyrd and Jamey Johnson. Just added to the show, for a very special acoustic set, is Slipknot/Stone Sour lead vocalist, Corey Taylor. Taylor is the multiplatinum selling, New York Times best-selling author and Grammy® Award winning singer/ songwriter in two of the most successful bands in rock music today. Rumor has it he may even join ZZ for a song or two. The event is a general admission show which promises to perpetuate the ZZ Top tradition of raucous revelry set to a down ‘n dirty beat. La Grange Fest is presented by “our good friends” at Jeremiah Weed. La Grange Fest takes its name from the band’s ode to the Texas town that was home to the notorious “Chicken Ranch,” later the subject of the musical “The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas”. Billy Gibbons, discussing the forthcoming show, noted, “We’re looking forward to having a good time with all of our friends and fans on the 22nd. Down Austin way is gonna be the place to be that day, doncha know…” La Grange Fest reconnects ZZ Top with its Texas roots and legacy quite specifically. Just this year the band received the Texas Cultural Trust’s 2011 Texas Medal of the Arts and was previously named “Official Texas Heroes” by the state’s House of Representatives. The Texas Commission on the Arts has named Billy Gibbons as 2012 Texas State Musician.

This coming week marks the release of A Tribute From Friends, an album of ZZ Top music by some of the band’s most ardent admirers including Nickelback who cover “Legs” most fittingly, Daughtry (“Waitin For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago”) and La Grange Fest star Jamey Johnson who tackles none other than “La Grange” on the album. They are joined by Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Jonny Lang and Steven Tyler, who have recorded “Sharp Dressed Man” as The M.O.B. for the project while Grace Potter & The Nocturnals put their special touch on “Tush.” Other participating artists & friends include Filter (“Gimme All Your Lovin’”), Wolfmother (“Cheap Sunglasses”) and Duff McKagan’s Loaded who contribute “Got Me Under Pressure.” There’s also “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers” from Coheed & Cambria, “Just Got Paid” by Mastodon and Wyclef Jean’s take on “Rough Boy.” The album, to be released by Show Dog/Universal Music on October 11, is testimony to the enduring influence of ZZ Top who issued a statement expressing their delight that their “music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire.” A Tribute From Friends can be pre-ordered now on www.zztop.com

RUF RECORDS SIGNS SAVOY BROWN & WILL RELEASE ITS NEW ALBUM, VOODOO MOON, ON CD AND VINYL NOVEMBER 8

LEGENDARY BLUES BAND WILL CELEBRATE NEW CD AND ITS 45TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SERIES OF ALBUM RELEASE PARTY SHOWS

ATLANTA, GA – Ruf Records announces the signing of legendary blues band Savoy Brown, and will release its debut CD and vinyl album for the label, Voodoo Moon, on November 8. Ruf Records is distributed in the U.S. by the Allegro Corporation.

Led by founding member and lead guitarist Kim Simmonds, Savoy Brown will celebrate the new album and its 45th anniversary with a series of CD party shows, including a very special concert at B. B. King Blues Club in New York City on October 7.

“I believe the songs on Voodoo Moon are the best I’ve written since the early ‘70s,” says Kim Simmonds. “It is modern blues rock but with more song orientation than normally associated with the genre.”

This is a strong statement from one of the architects of the British blues movement, which established Savoy Brown at its forefront with the band’s formation in 1966. Savoy Brown was also at the vanguard in another area: its first lineup was racially mixed, which, along with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, made it one of the earliest blues bands to break down one more musical barrier.

The nine all-original songs on Voodoo Moon should establish many new audience favorites at the band’s concerts and on the radio, especially the blues-rocking track, “She's Got The Heat." The album also includes an instrumental titled “24/7” that
absolutely smokes from start to finish.

Begun at Simmonds’ White Cottage Studio and finished and mastered at SubCat Studio near his adopted hometown in upstate New York, Voodoo Moon burns with an intensity that has long-been a trademark of Savoy Brown albums, highlighted by his blistering guitar work. The new CD reflects a lifetime of living and loving the blues. His new lineup of talent – Joe Whiting (vocals/sax), Pat DeSalvo (bass) and Garnet Grimm (drums) – rehearses faithfully, and it shows. Fans and critics alike have reported that this is one of, if not the best, live concert and new music experiences in the ever-evolving lineup of Savoy Brown.

Simmonds is constantly writing songs and working on his guitar playing – both electric and acoustic. “My motivation is to reach for that spirit I had as a young boy,” he says.
“I think that’s always good to hold onto. Constantly practicing, playing and playing live – raw, naked in a sense – brings creativity and perspective, as well as inspiration.”

Savoy Brown has cultivated a long list of former members in its 45-year existence who have gone on to additional glory, including guitarist “Lonesome” Dave Peverett, drummer Roger Earl and bassist Tone Sevens, who went on to form ‘70s platinum rock band, Foghat. The band has also had a lineage of strong vocalists, including Chris Youlden and Dave Walker, among others. And in “The Boogie Brothers” side project, Simmonds teamed up with Stan Webb, guitarist/leader of Chicken Shack, and singer/guitarist Miller Anderson of the Keef Hartley Band.

Savoy Brown has long occupied a place in British music history, having supported the legendary Cream at their very first London gig in 1967; and backing John Lee Hooker for his UK tour that same year. And the band’s songs, which have been recorded by such diverse artists as Little Milton, Rare Earth and Great White, continue to show relevance in today’s multi-media world, as evidenced by Savoy Brown’s classic, “Train to Nowhere,” having been featured on the 2009 season finale of the hit TV show, “CSI.”

Their album catalogue includes such classic, acclaimed releases as Blue Matter, A Step Further, Looking In, Raw Sienna and Street Corner Talking, among many others.

SINGER/SONGWRITER/GUITARIST DANNY CLICK SAYS LIFE IS A GOOD PLACE ON NEW CD FROM DOGSTAR RECORDS, DISTRIBUTED NATIONALLY BY BURNSIDE DISTRIBUTION

DANNY CLICK AND THE AMERICANA ORCHESTRA SET TO PERFORM SPECIAL SHOW AT 142 THROCKMORTON THEATRE ON FRIDAY OCT. 28

SAN RAFAEL, CA – Celebrating the release of his new CD, Life Is A Good Place (DogStar Records, distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution), singer/songwriter/guitarist Danny Click and the Americana Orchestra will perform a very special evening of music at 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, California, on Friday, October 28, at 8PM. Joining the San Rafael-based Danny Click will be special guests Bonnie Hayes, Tracy Blackman, Adrienne Biggs, Rebecca Roudman, and Don Bassey. The entire event will be filmed and recorded for a future high-definition DVD release. For ticket prices and information on that show, please go to
http://142throckmorton.inticketing.com/events.

Danny Click’s new CD, Life Is A Good Place has been generating considerable international airplay at Americana radio and rave reviews from the critics. In earlier reviews, Guitar Player Magazine said of Danny’s music: “...lots of artists try to do the same thing, but Click gets into the heart of the matter with honesty and passion.” And this from The Austin Chronicle: “...Whatever Americana turns out to be, Click will definitely fall within its boundaries, and may even help to expand them outward a little bit.”

Danny Click's sound is a refreshing return to smart, sassy blues-inflected rock and roll. Think Tom Petty crossed with John Mellencamp, spiced with the southern tradition of Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt. Add to that Click's searing guitar (he’s been called an “unsung guitar hero” - Austin American Statesman), reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughan and David Lindley, and you've got a winning mix. Yet Click doesn't just pay tribute to his musical heroes, he offers up his own emotionally compelling vision, one that puts him comfortably in their company.

Click grew up in a small town outside Indianapolis, the youngest of nine children in a working class family. One of his earliest memories is of listening to his mother play slide guitar using a butter knife while she held the guitar flat on her lap. Click first picked up his older brother's guitar when he was six and by the time he was in high school he was gigging around the area in his older sister's country band, covering tunes by Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson at VFW halls and other local venues.

During the '90s, Click honed his skills in bands throughout the Midwest before discovering a love of the blues. After immersing himself in the musical traditions of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and other giants of southern blues, Click felt the pull of the Austin scene, which was bursting with the energy of Eric Johnson, Lucinda Williams, and the legend of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Not long after arriving in Austin, Click put together a three-piece blues-rock outfit known as Danny and the Hurricanes, which quickly built a devoted local following.

After many years in Austin, Danny Click re-located to the west coast and has been based in San Rafael, California for the past few years. As Click’s local reputation has spread, his band performances have become must-hear shows in the San Francisco Bay Area. At one recent club date, the legendary Carlos Santana (who’s become a fan of the band), after watching the first set, proceeded to pick up a guitar and jam with Danny’s group for 15 minutes of blazing blues, joined by his wife Cindy Blackman on drums.

With three previous internationally-released albums to his credit, his latest CD, Life Is A Good Place, resonates with all who value amazing song writing alongside the resulting maturity of years on the road. Life Is A Good Place lands Click squarely in the upper echelon musically and lyrically. His songwriting continues in the tradition of the Texas greats; wide open songs with a dose of hope for all the people who hear them. His singing and live performances are equally compelling, calling to mind Chris Whitley, Tom Petty and Jackson Browne. An eclectic mix to say the least.

Life Is A Good Place showcases Danny Click in top form, surrounded by stellar musicians including Mark Goldenberg (Jackson Browne) on Hammond B3; Kevin McCormick (Jackson Browne) on bass; Mario Calire (OzoMatli, Wallflowers) on drums; Greg Leisz (Emmylou Harris, Bill Frisell) on lap steel and pedal steel; and Julieann Banks, Annie Burns and Tracy Grammer on vocal harmonies. Mixed by Brian Scheuble (Sheryl Crow, John Mayer) and mastered by Joe Gastwirt (Tom Petty, Grateful Dead, Patti Griffin), this record is a sonic gem.

This album is a heartfelt collection of songs of struggle and redemption. The stories lead us seamlessly through a range of emotions that closely follows the highs and lows of life itself. Life Is A Good Place evokes both a profound sense of loss and the wonder of transformation. Danny Click’s songwriting continues in the tradition of the Texas greats: wide open songs with a dose of hope for all who hear them. The new album puts Click squarely in the upper echelon musically and lyrically. From its radio perfect songs to the sparse stories taken from real life, it leaves you filled with hope and new respect for the human condition.

So put it on, sit back, and brace yourself.

CATFOOD RECORDS SIGNS BLUESMAN JAMES ARMSTRONG & WILL RELEASE HIS FIRST NEW CD IN 11 YEARS, BLUES AT THE BORDER, IN DECEMBER WITH NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION BY CITY HALL RECORDS

EL PASO, TX – Catfood Records has announced the signing of acclaimed bluesman James Armstrong and will release his label debut CD,Blues at the Border, in December, with national distribution by City Hall Records. Blues at the Border, Armstrong’s first new album in 11 years, was produced by Michael Ross, James Armstrong and Bob Trenchard, with tracks recorded at studios in New York City and Tornillo, Texas.

James Armstrong has been described by one music writer as “an artist in a world of craftsmen, harking back to a time when each bluesman had a distinctive musical voice. James shares with the legends the ability to go beyond rocking the roadhouse (though he excels at that), to telling the kind of story that the blues tells the best. He’s one of a very few seasoned artists who manages to honor the sound of traditional blues, while giving it the contemporary feel that makes modern fans groove.”

Blues at the Border is a mix of songs, stories and styles performed by an artist whose dedication to his craft has seen him through one of the hardest times in the history of touring musicians. “Since 9-11 it’s been hard for everybody: musicians, clubs and fans,” says James. “I wanted to make an album that reflected how much the world has changed.” By drawing on not only his deep blues roots but his rock, country and folk influences as well, James manages to transcend the constraints of tight musical boundaries. “The blues is evolving like every other genre,” he states.” You can be authentic and contemporary at the same time. It’s all about balance!”

Armstrong and fellow producers Michael Ross and Bob Trenchard went with “Blues at the Border” as the title cut to illustrate James’ point: the song uses grit, groove and lyrics that reflect a very 21st century frustration - border crossing. “‘Blues at the Border’ looks at life for musicians after 9-11,” he says. “Add to that the fact that I’ve been in a long distance international relationship for over eight years and it was only a matter of time before I’d write a song about the border. My girlfriend and I wrote it together over the phone!” The song has some of the best slide guitar on the album and a comic riff at the end, reminding us that James is a born entertainer. “I wanted the song to be funny, not a pity-party or giving over to despair. I’ve never seen the blues as sad music.”

The choice of Michael Ross as the main producer was a no-brainer. “I call Mike my guitar angel, after he covered for me on guitar when I was injured,” recalls Armstrong. “I told him he’d always play on my CDs, but this time I wanted him to produce me as well. And he really stepped up to the plate. His vast knowledge of all kinds of music helped establish the right mood in every cut, especially on the track, ‘Young Man with the Blues.’”

“Young Man with the Blues” is his most autobiographical song to date; and pays tribute to James’ father, a musician himself who gave James the gift of music, a love of the road and, despite the absence of a mother, a happy childhood. About love and loss, “Young Man” is a sad but, not self-pitying song, with three distinct grooves reflecting different phases in James’ life. “I needed to get the feeling right off the top and Mike made it happen with his haunting electronica intro. It’s not something I would have thought of, but I’m glad he did!

“Bob Trenchard was the man who pulled this whole thing together. When he came into my life, I didn’t just get a new label - Catfood Records - I got a songwriter and a bass-player, too. Recording with his musicians at his studio in Texas added yet another flavor to the album. With Bob, I got three more songs on the album and he let me do whatever I wanted with them.” What they ended up with in “Somebody Got to Pay” (co-written by Trenchard with Sandy Carroll and Jim Gaines), “Baby Can You Hear Me” and “Long Black Car,” is a great mix of James’ gritty guitar and Trenchard’s reflective lyrics.

The new CD also gave James the opportunity to pay tribute to the man who was “like a second dad” to him: Sam “Bluzman” Taylor. “He was a born mentor and a born showman,” James remembers. “More than anything, he taught me how to be an entertainer, and the beauty of harmonies. I really wanted to have Sam’s voice on the cut, ‘Everything That’s Good To Ya,’ and planned to record him, but his health suddenly took a turn for the worse; so I insisted we sample Sam’s signature ‘Weeelll!,’ and we put it on the top of the song.” Sam died four months later.

“Devil’s Candy” is a cautionary tale about what happens when you bite off more than you can chew. “This is one song that just keeps getting better whenever I play it live,” says James. “It began with a bass line, but the slide is what really drives it.” “Nothing Left to Say” is about an ex who can’t stop talking long after the relationship has ended. “This isn’t a song about who was right or who was wrong. It’s a song about: it’s time to move on,” he says. The theme of fresh starts and being grateful for what you’ve got is reflected in “Good Man, Bad Thing” and “Brand New Man.” A friend sent James “Brand New Man.” “I heard it and immediately related to it because I believe it’s never too late start anew,” he states. “‘Good Man’ reminds us that, every once in awhile, good people do bad things. The point is to get back on track immediately and do the right thing.” On the song, “High Maintenance Woman,” James lets the funk take over. Apart from the catchy groove, “HMW” has a lot of word-play, ending in a skit with the woman getting the last word. “My girlfriend Madonna and I had a lot of fun writing that skit. When we do this live, we tailor it to the crowd. Women love it!”

James Armstrong first made a splash with the blues world when he released three albums on HighTone Records: Sleeping with a Stranger (1995, and re-released in 2008),Dark Night (1998), and Got It Goin’ On (2000), which was recorded after recovering from a tragic incident that threatened to end his promising career. In April, 1997, a deranged man broke into his home and nearly stabbed Armstrong to death. After many weeks in the hospital and months of rehabilitation, Armstrong had to basically re-learn how to play the guitar again, due to nerve and tendon damage to his left arm suffered in the attack. But what James gained was a deeper more nuanced sound, richer vocals and, seeing as he could only use two fingers, a mastery of the slide. He also garnered two Blues Music Award nominations for Got It Goin' On.

James Armstrong tours internationally and will support the release of Blues at the Border with an extensive series of shows at clubs and festivals around the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like The Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in Bethel, NY. Of course, Bill Graham probably always made sure he had a good steak close at hand and Leslie West maybe always had a cooler full of fried chicken with him and if John Sebastion pitched a tent maybe it was from hanging around with Melanie backstage and for sure Iron Butterfly really just never took off after scoring a hit with the godawful "Inna Gadda Da Vita". just sayin'.....
