HERE COME THE PERSUASIONS!!!
PERSUASIONS OF THE DEAD IN STORES NOW!
A remixed, remastered, reconfigured, revamped, wholly reinvented version of The Persuasions’ legendary Grateful Dead sessions was released Sept. 13 as an expanded 20-track, two-CD set, Persuasions of the Dead (Zoho Roots.)
The album is based on the sessions used for Might As Well: The Persuasions Sing Grateful Dead, released in 2000 and out of print since 2002 – but also features six new tracks. Producer Rip Rense, who conceived and executive-produced the original project, said he wanted a redo.
“The Might as Well album was an endearing document of the sessions,” said Rense, “but I thought it should have been more than that. So with The Persuasions’ help and participation, we’ve added six tracks, six more guest artists, did a hell of a lot of editing, rearranging, and remixing, and finally, configured the thing like a Dead show: first set, second set.”
Said Grateful Dead lyricist and Jerry Garcia songwriting partner Robert Hunter of Persuasions of the Dead:
“Ever so much better. In fact, enchanting!”
The six brand new tracks are: “Stella Blue,” with haunting erhu solo by Dongming Qiao, “Don’t Ease Me In,” featuring vocal trumpet by Alyn Kelley that matches Garcia’s recorded solo on the “Go To Heaven” album, “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “New Speedway Boogie” (both discarded in the original sessions, but here rescued and spiffed up), and, in what Rense called a “light, whimsical tip of the hat to the Grateful Dead,” Persuasions versions of “Drumz” and “Space.”
All of the other songs on the double-album have tweaked arrangements, some dramatically, except for “Black Muddy River.”
“That was the first Grateful Dead song I asked the guys to try,” said Rense. “Funny thing is, they recorded it in Sean Altman’s (Rockapella) living room, and it turned out perfect.”
The original concept for the project was for Persuasions lead singer/arranger Jerry Lawson to adapt Dead tunes for The Persuasions’ inimitable a cappella style. Rense planned to have a sprinkling of guest artists doing solos on some of the tunes. For the initial sessions, Rense invited Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans to drop by and “maybe help the guys with any weird chords they can’t find.” Gans (who wound up co-producing “Might as Well” with Lawson) invited old Garcia musical cronies Pete Grant (dobro), Eric Thompson (mandolin), Peter Rowan, as well as the late Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick, the vocal group Mary Schmary, and others.
“The collaborations that resulted were wonderful, despite the fact that in some cases a cappella was sacrificed,” said Rense. “But when Vince Welnick starts accompanying, as he did on ‘Ship of Fools,’ ‘One More Saturday Night,’ and ‘Bertha,’ you just sing along.”
For Persuasions of the Dead, Rense added Jackie LaBranch and Gloria Jones from the Jerry Garcia Band to seven tracks (“Jerry Lawson, who consulted on the project, told me to ‘put ‘em on every song!’”), as well as old Persuasions friend Country Joe McDonald, who does a blues harp solo on “Sugaree” and sings a verse on “Liberty,” plus saxophonist James King, vocalist Alyn Kelley, erhu soloist Dongming Qiao, and Mark Karan from Bob Weir’s RatDog, who solos on “One More Saturday Night.”
“I looked down after Mark Karan’s solo and realized my socks were missing,” said Rense. “It’s now ‘The Persuasions and Friends,’ really, and the album finally has the scope, polish, fun, contrasts that I had hoped it would. It’s tighter, punchier, brighter. Bass man Jimmy Hayes’s parts have been mixed up, especially on the piano tracks, so everything has more propulsion. There is slightly less accompaniment, and some of the repetition that fetched a critical complaint or two has been addressed, as well.
“I think it’s the greatest Grateful Dead album that the Grateful Dead never made.”
Old Persuasions fan Tom Waits suggested the album title. There are also four alternate version bonus tracks available for download at iTunes, including a mix Rense described as the “rockingest version of ‘One More Saturday Night’ you are likely to hear” - with Karan, Welnick, percussionist Joe Craven, and bass by Marc Doten (who mixed and edited the album and bonus tracks.)
Dennis McNally, longtime Grateful Dead publicist and author of the official history of the band, “Long Strange Trip: The Inside Story of the Grateful Dead,” said this of Persuasions of the Dead:
"Given the Dead’s mixed reputation as vocalists, this might seem a little….odd. But what the Persuasions did was hear the incredible strength of the great songwriting and melodies at the root of the Dead’s music and transport them into their own world, the world of the voice. Or rather voices. And the result is a sweet, magical transformation.”

Ex-Beatles on red carpet for Harrison documentary
LONDON (Reuters) - Surviving ex-Beatles Paul McCartney andRingo Starr joined director Martin Scorsese on the red carpet late on Sunday for the premiere of "George Harrison: Living in the Material World."
The documentary, about the Fab Four guitarist who died in 2001 aged 58, will be released in UK cinemas for one night only on Tuesday before being aired by the BBC public broadcaster in November.
Scorsese traces the life of Harrison from his musical beginnings in Liverpool, his meteoric rise to fame with the Beatles and his search from an early age for spiritual fulfillment.
"We had lots of material things at quite an early age and we learned that wasn't it, we still lacked something," Harrison said when he was 22.
Scorsese had access to publicly unseen footage from Harrison's childhood and interviewed Starr, McCartney, John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and Harrison's widow Olivia among others.
"George, to me, was taking certain elements of R & B and rock and rockabilly and creating something unique," fellow guitarist Eric Clapton said.
Although most of the Beatles' hits were penned by Lennon and McCartney, Harrison wrote classics including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Here Comes the Sun."
He embraced Indian culture in the mid-1960s and organized the benefit Concert for Bangladesh in 1971 which the film makers called "the first major rock concert to address a world crisis."
"For years, his music seemed to be dealing with themes that I connected with," Oscar-winner Scorsese told the BBC at the premiere.
"I found comfort in them and a hope and a special experience listening to his music. I was fascinated by him."
McCartney said on the red carpet: "Every time I see anything to do with George it brings back more memories than you would believe.
"He was my little mate on the school bus ... when he was very little. He's sorely missed by us all."
McCartney was accompanied by fiancee Nancy Shevell. The couple have posted their wedding banns at the London registry office where the musician married his first wife Linda over 40 years ago.

DARYL HALL TALKS NEW ALBUM, ROCK HALL SNUB
Last week, Daryl Hall released Laughing Down Crying, his first solo album in 15 years. The record has a variety of songs on it from rock to R&B, so did the singer really consider the sound of each track? He filled us in.
(Cut #8) “I didn’t really think about it. I’m very comfortable with a lot of different styles and I’ve done that over the years with my music so I sort of wanted to just combine them all, really. I call it the box set of my mind because that’s sort of what it is. It’s stylistically, it’s ideas that hark back to when I first started writing songs all through various eras of my creative life and sort of mixing and matching.”
Meanwhile, Hall & Oates have been passed over for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet again. Daryl wasn’t surprised about the snub and told us why it happens.
(Cut #9) “I pissed off the whole rock crit establishment back in the ‘70s because I didn’t meet their expectations of being a follower of John Lee Hooker. I look at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the way I look at Playboy magazine, it’s passed it’s due by date.”
When asked if he’d attend the ceremony if and when he and John are recognized, Daryl said, “I’m not gonna say. We’ll see what happens.” For now, you can hear Hall’s music on Laughing Down Crying, which is out now.
• TIDBIT: Daryl’s web show, Live from Daryl’s House, as made the jump to TV. Check if and when it’s playing in your area at LiveFromDarylsHouse.com.
MICK JAGGER SPENDS TOO MUCH TIME ON FACEBOOK
Mick Jagger is busy promoting his new album with SuperHeavy, considering how to celebrate the Rolling Stone’s 50th anniversary next year and producing a new film he might star in called Tabloid, yet like the rest of us, he is easily distracted by Facebook. The rocker told England’s Daily Express, “I spend way too much time on the computer and not enough time playing the guitar.” Mick went on to say, “There’s an underlying problem of this screen life taking over all your life. It’s easy to keep in touch with people, some of whom I wish I’d never kept in touch with, but there they are on Facebook.” Read more at Express.co.uk.
• TIDBIT: Mick previously stated he needed to hire a personal assistant to update his online blogs because he couldn’t keep up with modern technology. It looks like he’s learned.
METALLICA AND LOU REED TALK MORE ABOUT LULU
In less than a month, Lou Reed and Metallica will release their collaborative album, Lulu, and the rockers are talking with RollingStone.com about the effort. Drummer Lars Ulrich called the record “really unique,” joking, “This makes [1988’s] …And Justice for All sound like the first Ramones album.” Lars added, “We have m-e-t-a-l in our name. But we can go f***ing anywhere and do anything.” Meanwhile, Lou described Metallica as “as powerful as you can get.” Read more at RollingStone.com and pick up Lulu when it comes out on November 1st.
• TIDBIT: Guitarist Kirk Hammett described Lou and the band as “kindred souls,” adding, “He speaks our language, slightly sarcastic and blunt, like another pea in the pod.”
AEROSMITH PRODUCER TALKS ABOUT THE BAND
Aerosmith fans have to wait until next year to hear the band’s new album, but the guys and their producer, Jack Douglas, have been keeping everyone in the loop about the progress of the effort. In fact, Jack just put out a two-minute video talking about working with the band for the first time in 20 years. He explains that nothing has really changed over the years and even though all the band members have a lot going on, they are “still the same people” and “having fun,” and that’s why they “were able to pull off [making an album] in the short amount of time [they] had.” See the clip in the featured videos section at Aerosmith.com.
• TIDBIT: Jack recently said the album would be out in May.
• TIDBIT: The last original album Jack worked with the band on was 1982’s Rock in a Hard Place.
ROGER DALTREY SAYS AMERICAN IDOL ISN’T LOOKING FOR GOOD LEAD SINGERS
Roger Daltrey thinks American Idol is to blame for a lack of good lead singers these days. The Who frontman told the Associated Press, “A lot of the new people they choose on shows like American Idol and things like that – I don’t ever hear lead singers. They always seem to choose to pick people that are great singers, fabulous singers, but they’ve never got the voice that makes a great lead singer.” So who does Roger think is a good singer? He let us know (See Related Cut #11). See Roger on tour now. Get his dates at TheWho.com.
• TALKING POINT: Do you think anyone good has come out of American Idol?

JEFF BECK AND ROBERT PLANT TO COLLABORATE?
Jeff Beck might be working on a very exciting collaboration with none other than Robert Plant. The guitar legend told PlanetRock.com that he met the Led Zeppelin singer at the New Orleans JazzFest where he said they “had a lovely chat,” adding that “there might be something there. Who knows?” Jeff explained they’re both into the Eastern and Arabic sound which is prevalent in Zeppelin’s music. He went on to say, “We’re both pretty busy at the moment but if the desire’s there, you make it happen.” Time will tell if they do.
• TIDBIT: When Robert came into Jeff’s dressing room, Jeff was taking a nap and thought it was his manager. He yelled at him to leave, adding, “You let anybody in here and I’m gonna knock em out,’ only to hear Robert Plant respond, “Alright. How you doin?”
STONES TO RELEASE DELUXE EDITION OF SOME GIRLS
There’s no word yet if The Rolling Stones will mark their 50th anniversary next year but one thing that is definitely happening is a deluxe re-issue of their classic 1978 album, Some Girls. Mick Jagger revealed to Spinner.com that, much like they did last year with Exile on Main Street, there will be an extra disc of material filled with outtakes along with the remastered album. It’s due out around Thanksgiving. As for those 50th anniversary celebrations, Jagger would only say they are discussing it.
• TIDBIT: Mick’s debut album with his supergroup, SuperHeavy, is out on Tuesday. It also features Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman.
McCARTNEY: 2012’S MUSICARES PERSON OF THE YEAR
Next year, the MusiCares Foundation will honor Paul McCartney as their Person of the Year. The Beatle great will be recognized for his creative accomplishments, charitable work and philanthropy at a ceremony held in L-A during GRAMMY week in February. Previous honorees include Sting, Neil Young, James Taylor and Don Henley.
• TIDBIT: Paul has won 14 GRAMMYs.
JEFF BECK TO BE HONORED AS A LIVING LEGEND
Each year, England’s Classic Rock Magazine recognizes an outstanding musician as a Living Legend at their Classic Rock Roll of Honor ceremony and this year, they chose wisely. Jeff Beck will be bestowed with the honor in London on November 9th. The guitarist said, “To be named as a Living Legend amongst so many fantastic musicians is an honor.” Those other musicians who previously got the award include Jimmy Page, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop and Lemmy Kilmister.
• TIDBIT: The ceremony will be hosted by Kiss bassist Gene Simmons.
ARE THE ROLLING STONES PLANNING A TOUR?
Could the Rolling Stones be working on something? All four members of the band were photographed exiting a building in London recently, sparking rumors that they could be putting together a 50th anniversary tour for 2012. Don’t expect the guys to confirm anything anytime soon – singer Mick Jagger wants the media focus to stay on his new supergroup, SuperHeavy, which releases their self-titled debut album on the 19th.
• TIDBIT: The Stones haven’t played together since their Bigger Bang tour wrapped in August of 2007.
• TIDBIT: SuperHeavy is made up of Mick, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley and A.R. Rahman.
KEITH RICHARDS’ BOOK BEING TURNED INTO A MOVIE
Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life, has sold over a million copies and now, the Rolling Stones guitarist has revealed that it’s going to be turned into a film. While being honored at last week’s GQ Awards in London, Keith explained that the problem will be finding an actor to portray him. He said, “There are feelers out at the minute (but) I’m in no rush at the moment. Also, how are they going to find me? The idea of succession of Keith Richards coming down is horrifying.” Coincidentally, Keith was given his award by Johnny Depp, who is a favorite to play the rocker.
• TIDBIT: Johnny based his Pirates of the Caribbean character, “Captain Jack Sparrow,” on Keith and Richards went on to play “Jack Sparrow’s” dad in the film’s sequels.
DYLAN’S ART ON DISPLAY IN NYC
Bob Dylan isn’t just a singer and songwriter, he’s an artist too and you can see some of his paintings and drawings in New York City. An exhibit called The Asia Series will be on display at the Gagosian Gallery in Manhattan. It boasts works the legendary rocker created while in Japan, China, Vietnam and South Korea when he toured there earlier this year. You can see it now until October 22nd. Learn more at Gagosian.com.
• TIDBIT: The gallery says many of the works in the series are “firsthand depictions of people, street scenes, architecture and landscape” while others are “cryptic paintings often of personalities and situations.”
• TIDBIT: This is Dylan’s first exhibition of paintings in New York City. His work was previously on display in Germany and Denmark.
BUDDY HOLLY GETS A STAR ON THE WALK OF FAME
Buddy Holly now has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At the ceremony, Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers and actor Gary Busey, who portrayed Buddy in the 1978 movie The Buddy Holly Story, both spoke. Holly’s star is just north of the stars of John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, who all cited Buddy’s music as a major influence.
• TIDBIT: Buddy’s widow, Maria Elena Holly, who was married to him for less than six months before he was killed in a plane crash in 1959 at age 22, said that one of his dreams was to write scores for movies and come to Hollywood and make his mark. She added, “Half of that dream did not come true. But the other half did come true with this beautiful star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

THE EARLIEST RECORDINGS BY THE BEATLES
TO BE RELEASED IN ONE COMPLETE COLLECTION
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NORTH AMERICA
ON THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY
THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS: 50th Anniversary Edition
AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 8th (Time Life)
Deluxe Packaging Includes Rare and Candid Photos by Astrid Kirchherr,
Signed Contracts and Personal Biographies Handwritten by Each Member in 1961
Fairfax, VA (September 29, 2011) --- 50 years after The Beatles first entered a recording studio, the complete collection of those tracks will be available for the first time in North America when THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS: 50th Anniversary Edition, is released to stores November 8th on Time Life. The 2-CD set comes with a specially-designed book that is a historical trove of concert and intimate photos taken by Astrid Kirchherr and others who were with The Beatles during the early days of their career. The book also includes handwritten biographies by each member of the group, signed contracts, original artwork taken from posters and records, and text by Hans Olof Gottfridsson, who has spent years researching this period of the Beatles’ career.
In North America, it is generally believed that the Beatles’ recording career began on Capitol in 1964. Few know that it actually began on the German Polydor label in 1961. As Gottfridsson notes in the book for THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS, Polydor executive and big band leader Bert Kaempfert discovered the group in a German nightclub, signing them to his own company and then releasing the songs through Polydor. The night they signed the contract at Kaempfert’s kitchen table, the four Beatles wrote brief autobiographies, reproduced here in their original handwriting. Through a combination of music, photos, documents, artwork and history, THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS beautifully captures John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison just before they rocketed to international stardom. The earliest days of The Beatles have never been revisited in such detail.
The set includes every recording they made for Kaempfert and Polydor in 1961 and 1962. Multiple versions have been released throughout the past several decades – some in mono, some in stereo – each with distinctly different sounds. Most notably, the US versions of these tracks were overdubbed with another guitar player and drummer in an attempt to mirror the edgier sound the group had evolved into, unbeknownst to American fans at the time of their release in 1964. All versions of every track, including mono and stereo mixes, are included in the double disc set, remarkable in their difference but all bearing the same unmistakable sound of a wholly new kind of band.
Many of the Polydor tracks feature Tony Sheridan on lead vocals, a decision made by Kaempfert. However, John Lennon sings lead vocals on “Ain’t She Sweet,” and George Harrison plays an instrumental, “Cry For A Shadow.”
THE BEATLES WITH TONY SHERIDAN: FIRST RECORDINGS: 50th Anniversary Edition is a remarkable story, told through music, mementos and words, of a band on the cusp of changing music and pop culture forever. The collection is a fascinating and comprehensive view of one of the most important yet overlooked moments in Beatles history.

Review: Bob Dylan, Jack White channel Hank Williams
By Chris Willman
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - True to his prediction, Hank Williams never got out of this world alive. But leave it to country's all-time monarch of misery, last heard on this mortal coil 58 years ago, to be responsible for the most delightfully despondent album of 2011.
Executive-produced by Bob Dylan, "The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams" resurrects lyrics left behind by the country legend after his 1953 death and lends them to a dozen contemporary singer/songwriters, who completed and recorded them. The well-chosen cast of collaborators includes Jack White, Lucinda Williams,Sheryl Crow, Alan Jackson, Levon Helm, and Dylan himself -- all so lonesome they could cry, or die, or co-write across the great divide.
The compilation holds together with a remarkable consistency, since nearly all the performers opted to adopt sadder scraps from Williams' archives, and also because they all fitted them with pre-rock, hillbilly-baiting arrangements right out of the early '50s. Fiddles are plentiful, and this is the place this weekend -- not at a movie theater -- to find some real (pedal) steel.
Dylan wisely lets Alan Jackson -- whose place among Williams' descendants isn't hard for any country fan to figure -- kick off the wondrous gloom. "If in your heart somehow you know you'll fail whate'er you do… If you have had each joy of life destroyed and cast away… If your soul has wilted like a rose that's never felt the dew... yes, you've been lonesome, too." They truly don't slit 'em -- er, write 'em -- like that any more.
The fatalism rarely lets up. Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell partner up for "I Hope You Shed a Million Tears," with the former doing all of the singing and the latter interjecting some longer spoken-word recitatives, in the great melodramatic country tradition. "I loved you like there's no tomorrow and found out that there's not," reads Crowell.
Naturally, it doesn't all sound as suicidal as it reads. Along with the loudest electric rhythm guitar on the album, Jack White brings a certain vengeful jauntiness to his accusatory tone in "You Know That I Know." Patty Loveless, the brilliant mountain-music revivalist, sounds positively giddy in announcing "You're Through Fooling Me."
Norah Jones' Western-style melody on "How Many Times Have You Broken My Heart" -- the arrangement of which owes as much to Willie Nelson as Williams -- achieves a sweet liftoff, even as it essays plummeting spirits. For his part, Dylan seems determined to get mourners out onto the dance floor with "The Love That Faded," one of a half-dozen waltzes on the album (which, honestly, might be one or two too many).
A bare handful of happy tunes crop up, including Crow's heartfelt "Angel Mine" and Merle Haggard's "The Sermon on the Mount," the sole example of the gospel lyrics Williams frequently sang under his Luke the Drifter pseudonym.
Lucinda Williams has traded sadness for celebration in her most recent work, so anyone aware of that development won't be surprised that her contribution, "I'm So Happy I Found You," is the album's most rapturous song of devotion.
The lyrics here are particularly spare, and so is the solo-acoustic accompaniment, leaving plenty of room to worship Williams' vibrato in all its transfixing, emotive glory.
Labors of love don't get much less laborious or much lovelier. That lonesome whippoorwill Williams sang about? It still hasn't been put out of its misery, and thank God for that.

THE BAND OF HEATHENS
TO DOUBLE DOWN IN DENVER
ON OCTOBER 7 & 8
Weekend of music will celebrate the success of Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son album, and a new live CD/DVD to be recorded.
Band offers travel packages to Mile High City.
DENVER, Colo. — The Band of Heathens will celebrate the success of their current album Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son with a weekend of music in Denver on Fri.-Sat., October 7–8. The shows, which will be taped for a forthcoming live CD and DVD, will take place at Cervante’s Other Side.
Anticipating that fans from all over the nation will regard the weekend as an opportunity to hang out and meet one another, the band will offer special travel packages. The Double Down Travel Package for two includes two nights at Denver’s four-star Renaissance Hotel, a pair of tickets for both shows, a signed Double Down in Denver poster and sticker, one CD from the band’s catalog, two souvenir T-shirts, an mp3 download of the live recording upon being mixed and mastered, an invitation to a private acoustic show on Saturday afternoon, and a drawing for special prizes to be announced. Additional information may be found at < http://www.bandofheathens.com/doubledown/>.
2011 has proven a big year for the Band of Heathens. Coming off an appearance on PBS’ Austin City Limits on a bill with Elvis Costello, Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son was released in March and immediately shot to the Top 5 on the Americana airplay chart (the band is no stranger to such altitudes — its preceding albums each topped the chart).
Relix magazine, in its review of the new album, said, “The Band of Heathens triumph, not so much because it captures the Americana spirit, but because it reminds us what it’s like to be human.” The New York Times called the band’s Big Apple show “hungry, unflagging and lean.” M Music & Musicians magazine noted, “The Heathens survey a broad musical terrain on the album, far wider than the Americana tag with which the band is often pinned.”
According to band member Ed Jurdi, “This past year, recording Top Hat Crown and the subsequent tours of the U.S. and Europe has been the most productive, positive time for the band. I feel like we're really starting to find our groove as a musical unit.”
“We’re looking forward to bringing our commune of Heathens to Denver and sharing in a couple of nights of music, friends and weirdness. Ultimately we want to create a unique weekend of music for our fans, they have given us the space to do our thing, and we are incredibly thankful for that.”

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The newly formed Real Gone Music re-issue label boasts a diverse release schedule for 2011 and 2012 drawing from both major label licensing arms and independents, featuring such artists as the Grateful Dead, Connie Stevens, Rick Nelson and, kicking off Real Gone’s licensing arrangement with ABKCO Music & Records, Inc., ? and the Mysterians.
Real Gone Music, formed and helmed by industry vets Gordon Anderson and Gabby Castellana, aims to establish itself as the most eclectic and prolific catalog and reissue label in the country. The label has announced distribution through by Razor & Tie.
Anderson and Castellana each started businesses in 1993 — Collectors’ Choice Music and Hep Cat Records & Distribution, respectively — that became two of the most important outlets for buyers and sellers of vintage music recordings. Now, 18 years later, they have joined forces to launch Real Gone Music, a reissue label dedicated to serving both the collector community and the casual music fan with a robust release schedule combining big-name artists with esoteric cult favorites. Real Gone Music is a music company dedicated to combing the vaults for sounds that aren’t just gone — they’re REAL gone. What makes a piece of out of print music real gone?
The label won’t limit itself to any single era or genre. Rather, as Castellana says, “We want to put out titles that, through their repertoire and packaging, inspire the kind of excitement we all felt when we bought our first album or single in a record store . . . music you can lose yourself in.”
In his previous capacity at the helm of Collectors’ Choice Music, Gordon Anderson not only produced more than 1,500 titles for release on compact disc, but also merchandised the #1 mail order music catalog in the United States. Both the Collectors’ Choice Music label and catalog were renowned for their eclectic, knowledgeable assortment of artists and titles and their dedication to quality. Real Gone Music continues the Collectors’ Choice Music tradition, with a broadening of focus to include vinyl and digital releases as well as compact disc. Co-president Gabby Castellana started and built Hep Cat into a major American distributor for the world’s most prominent and respected reissue labels, among them Collectors’ Choice Music.
Real Gone Music will debut in November with 12 titles headlined by the Grateful Dead’s Dick’s Picks, Vols. 34, 35 & 36. “Dick” was Dick Latvala, the official tape archivist for the Dead until 1999, whose inspiration and encyclopedic knowledge of the band’s vaults spawned the fabled Dick’s Picks series of Dead concert volumes. Comprising 36 volumes,Dick’s Picks follows the band on its long, strange trip through a multitude of eras, tours and venues, featuring handpicked shows that display the band at its most visionary, improvisational height. Real Gone Music will bring this cache of Dead concert brilliance to record stores. Many have never been previously available at retail.
November will also bring two original albums from ? and the Mysterians, the legendary garage band known for the smash “96 Tears” on the Cameo label, available on vinyl for the first time in America since their original LP release. Real Gone will reissue the LPs, 96 Tears and Action, on 180-gram vinyl, re-mastered from the original tape sources at 45 rpm for maximum fidelity. Hailing from Saginaw, Michigan, this group of Mexican-American teenagers will forever be anointed as the garage band’s garage band by collectors of ’60s cool: the sound, an insistent three-chord beat powered by that unmistakable Vox organ; the name, taken from a Japanese horror film, and, of course, the sunglasses-donning “Question Mark” himself, who claimed to have been born on Mars and lived among dinosaurs in a past life. The debut album reached #66 on Billboard. And while the Action album saw no chart action, it contains the nuggets “Girl (You Captivate Me)” and “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby!”
Other November highlights include singles collections from ’60s songbirds Connie Stevens, Joanie Sommers andShelby Flint, each boasting dozens of sides yet to see release on CD. The Girls From Petticoat Junction: Sixties Sounds features sunshine pop from the Hooterville Honeys (Linda Kaye Henning, Lori Saunders and Meredith MacRae), originally released on Imperial Records and timed to coincide with the release of the series on DVD. And, finally, Cameo Parkway: Holiday Hits features 18 holiday-themed tracks (13 never on CD) from the hallowed vaults of the Philly-based indie label by such artists as Bobby Rydell & Chubby Checker, Bobby the Poet, Rudolph Statler Orchestra, the Lonesome Travelers and, last but not least, Bob Seger and the Last Heard, while the label extends its holiday celebration to include long sought-after Christmas albums from composer-arranger David Rose and singer-actor Ed Ames.

WILLIE NILE’S THE INNOCENT ONES
TO FINALLY SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY IN THE U.S.
The album, widely acclaimed in Europe, was co-produced by Nile, collaborator Frankie Lee, noted producer Stewart Lerman and Eagles/Rosanne Cash guitarist Steuart Smith.
NEW YORK, N.Y. — “This is as good a record as I’ve ever made,” Willie Nile says of his new release The Innocent Ones. That’s saying a lot, considering the amount of indispensable music that the tenacious New Yorker has produced over his long and eventful career. The CD, which long eluded the American market except as an import and the odd merch table, has a U.S. brick-and-mortar street date of November 22, 2011.
In that time, Nile has survived life as a Next Big Thing, walked away from the major-label world twice, and reinvented himself as a scrappy DIY artist. Along the way, he’s built a deeply impressive body of recordings, earned the loyalty of a devoted worldwide fan base, and amassed an extensive backlog of effusive critical acclaim.
Willie Nile is both a songwriter’s songwriter and an impassioned performer whose stirring, personally charged rock ’n’ roll marks him as a true believer. His compositions are as impassioned as they are infectious, and he performs them with a fervor that matches their melodic craft and lyrical insight.
The ranks of Willie Nile’s fans include Bruce Springsteen, who has invited him to perform with the E Street Band on multiple occasions, including a pair of historic shows at New York’s Shea Stadium and Giant Stadium, and Pete Townshend, who personally requested him as the opening act on The Who’s 1980 U.S. tour. Other avowed Nile admirers include Bono, Lou Reed, Graham Parker, Ian Hunter, Jim Jarmusch, Adam Duritz, Little Steven and Lucinda Williams, who once remarked, “Willie Nile is a great artist. If there was any justice in this world, I’d be opening up for him instead of him for me.”
The Innocent Ones decisively demonstrates that, more than 30 years into his recording career, Willie Nile is at the top of his game, making music that’s as powerful as anything in his esteemed catalog. The album, recorded in New York and Hoboken with such longtime cohorts as songwriting collaborator Frankie Lee, noted producer Stewart Lerman and Eagles/Rosanne Cash guitarist Steuart Smith, has already won considerable praise from critics and fans overseas, where BBC Radio Scotland recently named it Album of the Week, calling it “stunning . . . THE rock ’n’ roll album of 2011!,” andJAM magazine proclaimed it to be “full of timeless songs
. . . passionate . . . romantic . . . stupendous,” and called Nile “one of the best American singer-songwriters of our time.”
Those raves are borne out on such new tunes as “Singin’ Bell,” a bracing anthem that the artist describes as an effort to filter the populist sentiment of Pete Seeger through the in-your-face sensibility of the Ramones, and the album’s moving title track, on which Nile draws upon some harsh truths to create an uplifting rock anthem.
“This album,” he says, “includes a number of songs dedicated to the downtrodden, the forgotten, the outcasts, the hopeless — the innocent ones. It deals with some heavy issues here and there, but at the same time I think it’s an upbeat, feel-good record. I wanted it to be light on its feet and fun to listen to, and it’s all that.”
Another album track that holds particular significance for Nile is “One Guitar,” a moving ode to music’s ability to heal and inspire. “It’s about what one guitar and one voice can do to help change the world,” the artist asserts. The response that the song has already received from audiences, critics and fellow artists has inspired Nile to create the One Guitar Campaign (oneguitar.org), a collaborative charitable initiative. The One Guitar Campaign encourages other artists to record their own rendition of the song, with the various versions being sold as downloads on iTunes, and the net profits donated to a variety of worthy charitable causes.
His passionate belief in the power of music has been a cornerstone of Nile’s life since his childhood. Born into a large Irish Catholic family in Buffalo, NY, he began playing piano at the age of eight, and within a few years had begun writing his own songs. After graduating from the University at Buffalo with a B.A. in Philosophy, he moved to Greenwich Village. He was initially sidelined in New York by bouts with pneumonia and mono, which put him out of commission for a couple years. While recuperating, he concentrated on honing his songwriting skills.
After recovering, Nile became a popular fixture in the Village’s folk clubs, while drawing energy from the emerging downtown punk scene. An extended residency at the Bleecker Street club Kenny’s Castaways led to a high-profile piece by legendary New York Times critic Robert Palmer, who called Nile “an exceptional talent” and “one of the best singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in a long time.”
The Times piece led to a record deal with Arista Records, for which Nile recorded a pair of albums, Willie Nile andGolden Down, released in 1980 and 1981, respectively. Those albums won a sizable audience and established Nile as a major talent, with one critic calling his debut effort “one of the most thrilling post-Byrds folk-rock albums of all time.” But his career momentum took a dive when legal disputes with his label caused him to walk away from the music business, beginning a recording hiatus that lasted nearly a decade.
Although he continued to write, Nile maintained his distance from the spotlight until 1991, when he reemerged with a new deal with Columbia Records and a new album, Places I Have Never Been. That album, which featured guest appearances by Roger McGuinn, Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III, restored Nile to prominence with fans and critics. The following year, he went the independent route with the four-song EP Hard Times in America. 1997 saw the release of Willie Nile — Archive Alive, which documented a 1980 performance in New York’s Central Park. In 1998, Nile lent his unmistakable voice to the all-star concept album Largo, alongside the likes of Levon Helm, Carole King, Cyndi Lauper and Taj Mahal.
In 1999, Nile released Beautiful Wreck of the World, which launched an exciting new chapter in his career, one in which he’s embraced independent status to create and distribute his music on his own terms. His new approach yielded substantial results, with the disc chosen as one of the year’s Top Ten Albums by critics at Billboard, The Village Voiceand Stereo Review. By that point, Nile had substantially stepped up his touring activities in Europe, where he’s built a large and enthusiastic following in several countries.
2005’s Streets of New York, acclaimed by many longtime fans as his most potent work to date, ushered in the busiest and most productive period of Nile’s long career. Graham Parker called the disc “a real gem . . . Stirring melodies, passionate vocals, intriguing lyrics — every track a winner,” and Lucinda Williams was moved to note, “If there was any justice in this world, I’d be opening up for him instead of him for me.” The CD Live From the Turning Point and the DVD Live From the Streets of New York followed in 2007 and 2008, respectively. His widely celebrated collection of new songs in 2009, House of a Thousand Guitars, inspired UNCUT to liken him to a “one-man Clash,” and Power Popto rave, “The title song references Hendrix, Dylan, The Stones, Lennon, and John Lee Hooker, and manages the incredible feat of living up the best of every one of them!”
That ongoing burst of creative momentum continues with The Innocent Ones, which makes it clear that, after more than three decades of music-making, Willie Nile remains as much of a believer as ever. “There have been some tough times, but overall I think that taking the long road has been a good thing,” he reflects. “The same fire and passion that I felt when I first came to New York City still burns as bright, and maybe even brighter, now.” I love what I do. I’m writing all the time and still have ideas coming out of my ears. It feels like I’m just getting started, and I look forward to the days ahead and the adventures to come.”

PARADISE LOST FROM GREAT AMERICAN TAXI
REVEALS AN ODE TO THE AMERICAN DREAM
Produced by Todd Snider, recorded in East Nashville, TN, third studio album is “electric folk for our times”; Taxi Plays Americana Music Festival in Nashville in October.
Guests include Tim O’Brien, Barry Sless, and Elizabeth Cook.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Great American Taxi marks its sixth year as one of the best-known headliners on the Americana music scene with a new release, Paradise Lost, produced by critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Todd Snider. The band also enlisted master folk musicians Tim O’Brien, Barry Sless, and Elizabeth Cook to tackle songs about working class, blue-collar issues while maintaining Taxi’s signature upbeat, country-, bluegrass-, rock-infused, Americana-without-borders feel.
Paradise Lost is set for release distribution through Great American Taxi Records (GATRecords), available in soft release at http://www.greatamericantaxi.com and other digital retail outlets on October 11, 2011. Brick and mortar release for the album is February 22, 2012. The first hundred fans to pre-order the album will get a signed copy by the band and all CD pre-orders will get a free Paradise Lost digital download.
Confronting current issues like mountaintop removal, nuclear energy, poor economic conditions, or a soldier returning from war isn’t unfamiliar territory for the band. “I believe in the power of music and songs that can generate the energy to do something,” explains Great American Taxi’s singer/guitarist/mandolinist Vince Herman. “Politics should be in music; everything’s politics, especially music. Songwriting can draw attention to appropriate issues of our times.”
“Taxi’s latest release has shed the jamming and gone for the throat with focused song writing and tight musical arrangements,” adds keyboardists/singer and album executive producer Chad Staehly. “The album combines ‘folky’ elements with straight ahead bluegrass that was propelled by Tim O’Brien playing fiddle, banjo and mandolin on several numbers mixed with equal parts rock ’n’ roll — think early-’70s country-rock Rolling Stones.”
Taxi has been performing many dates over the past couple of years as backup band for folk songster and storyteller Todd Snider so it’s no surprise to see Snider’s name crop up on the production credits. He makes an appearance on lead vocals, harp and some back-up vocals.
With Paradise Lost, Great American Taxi remain inspired by roots rockers like The Band, The Jayhawks, Gram Parsons, and New Riders of the Purple Sage, wearing these influences on their collective sleeve but carving out new territory along the way both lyrically and musically.
The band crafted a batch of 12 songs that follow a script of sorts, focusing on America in the new millennium. The theme started to develop in 2010 when they spent time in Nashville. Later that year, while on tour with Snider in Denver, lightning struck: Snider and the band decided to work together to create Taxi’s third album, which was to explore what “paradise lost” means to all of us, individually and collectively. Paradise Lost takes on issues such as loss of childhood, loss of innocence, lost loved ones — even the loss of the record industry.
The release wraps up a trilogy, the band realized while working on Paradise. Their three albums loosely sketch out three periods in American history. People came to this country to carve out their Streets of Gold (GAT’s first release in 2007), got caught up in a bunch of Reckless Habits and have ended up with a sense of Paradise Lost.
The lead track on the album, “Poor House,” came to them in a peculiar way while the band was playing in Oklahoma City. They received a call from their songwriting friend Benny Galloway (Yonder Mountain String Band), who had no idea that GAT was in Oklahoma. By coincidence, he called to say he was driving through Woody Guthrie’s hometown of Okemah, OK, knowing that the Taxi boys were big Guthrie fans. Galloway showed up about an hour before the show and ran “Poor House” by them as a potential song they could play together that night. Galloway obliged the band’s desire to include the track and dropped off a demo version weeks later while all were back home in Colorado.
When work began on Paradise Lost, Snider wanted the lyrics first before anything else. All five band-members contributed. Snider helped them edit and whittle down the catalog of songs to about fifteen tunes before they shored up the music and headed for East Nashville in April of 2011. There they arrived at Eric McConnell’s house (where Snider cut his acclaimed release East Nashville Skyline and where Jack White produced Loretta Lynn’s Grammy-award winning release Van Lear Rose).
Staehly recalls, “The house definitely has a certain vibe to it, maybe it’s all the old analog gear or McConnell’s approach, but this new album from Taxi hearkens to the sounds of both of those albums. It’s a bit raw with all kinds of warmth and vibe to it that helps bring home these workingman songs. Paradise Lost has an everyman’s aesthetic to it that evokes a reminder of how things ought to be for those in search of the elusive American Dream.”
Great American Taxi’s sophomore effort, Reckless Habits (2010), garnered critical attention on the Americana music scene, topped at #12 on the Americana Music Association’s radio chart; it remained in the top 25 for more than two months. Habits sat atop the Colorado radio chart for more than two months and remained in the top 25 for more than a year. Reckless Habits found the band moving, “confidently between touching base on their first generation influences and building songs with unmistakably individual presence,” noted the Boulder Weekly.
Taxi has spent the last six years touring America non-stop, and their astute observations on the American condition resound with a truth and values ethos that all can relate to. After all, these guys have seen a lot, having played more than 750 shows in their short history together and traveling close to 500,000 miles in that time, spreading a brand of music that they affectionately refer to as “Americana without borders.”
The 12 tracks on Paradise Lost include a couple of reflective ballads, a sing-along or two, and some rockers that will make you want to get up and shake your money-maker. Great American Taxi, along with their friend and producer Todd Snider, deliver a collection of what Staehly calls “electric folk music for our times.” Paradise Lost is an ode to the American Dream, often times forsaken but always there to be rediscovered.

YES Legends Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman To Tour The US Fall 2011
Asheville, NC - Much to the delight of fortunate music fans in the Eastern part of North America, music legends and former YES members Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman will be playing a select number of engagements this coming Fall 2011. The legendary duo performed a series of successful concerts in the UK in 2010 in support of their critically acclaimed CD release 'The Living Tree', and are now bringing their highly anticipated show to America!
Having worked together on and off since 1971's groundbreaking YES masterwork 'Fragile', Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman have traveled similar musical paths that have eventually and happily led their careers back together again! Now once again, the duo promise a magical evening of music and humor for all who attend! “Expect a night of music, full of YES classics and new adventures in song from 'The Living Tree' album and moments of brilliance, humor and affection borne from a friendship and musical partnership that has lasted 40 years”, says Jon. "We knew from the responses on the last YES tour that the acoustic section was extremely popular and that many of the pieces could be re-arranged and adapted to make very interesting and hopefully enjoyable new ways of playing YES music and our own music," adds Rick.
The tour is being produced by Metropolitan Talent Presents and is booked by Keith Naisbitt of Los Angeles based Agency for the Performing Arts. John Scher co-CEO of Metropolitan says, "We are incredibly proud to be presenting the North American debut of this legendary duo! Jon and Rick ARE the voice and sound of YES, as well as famously successful solo performers! This tour will be areal treat for their legions of fans."
Here's what the UK press has said about the Anderson Wakeman tour:
“One of the songs played on the night was the impressive '23/24/11' (from Anderson Wakeman - The Living Tree), the true story of a soldier out in Afghanistan who had that amount of time left to serve as his tour of duty. Looking round at the audience there wasn't a dry eye left in the house. Once more the combination of Jon's amazing vocal style and the lyrics work perfectly.” - Ian D. Hall, LS Media, UK
“Anderson showed yet again that he is the true voice of YES...Wakeman provided the keyboard wizardry and a stream of stories.” - Ian Harvey, Express & Star, UK
“Supporters of these two legends can witness close up, their unique bond which spans almost 40 years; and why these two are being billed as the 'Heart and Soul' of Prog giants YES.” - Classic Media, UK
"Constant humorous interludes and witty interjections from the pair helped enliven the show and added a welcomed lightness. Not only were these anecdotes entertaining, they were also insightful...these two are a perfect creative partnership." - Neil Mach, Staines Weblog

Jane Scott, long time rock reporter at the Cleveland Plain Dealer passed away July 4th at the age of 92. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame held a memorial service for her August 28th and I was one of the lucky 900 to pack the hall.
The biggest cheer of the night came early when current pop music critic for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, John Soeder, strode to the stage in a t-shirt that read "Induct Jane"! This was a woman who's career as a music reporter began in 1964 and ended with her retirement in 2002 after covering at least 10,000 shows.
Those of us in attendance for the "sold out" memorial were treated by many stories of Scott by former co workers, musicians and various friends. Congressman Dennis Kucinich got a warm welcome and he told a great story of him working as a copy boy early in Scott's career covering music for the PD. All (and there were many who took the stage that night) had memories and stories of Scott, including her one nephew, touched on the fact that she loved her gig and thought all musicians were following their dream. To me it explained why she could cover a punk band, pop, soul, middle of the road, alternative and seem to like them all.
Scott was not a youngster starting in this business and some may have scoffed that she didn't seem hip enough but when you got past the hair and big red glasses, ticket pinned to her outfit; she really was hipper than most of us thought we were; she had the mind and heart to know that these were people trying to make their music heard. She didn't care if the musicians were local or bigtime; they all got her ear.
I never knew Jane Scott personally but I read her "What's Happening" column in the PD and loved her excitement for live music and her connection with the fans. She never wanted to be in the front row; she preferred to be further back in the crowd where she could see how the fans were reacting. Hank La Conti who owns the local rock club "The Agora" said they always wondered how Jane got backstage as she never had a pass but was always found back there! This was the woman who charmed Lyle Lovett who flirted with her from the stage in the last show she attended in 2008, accompanied Jimi Hendrix when he went and bought a Corvette in Cleveland Heights, shared a beer with Jim Morrison and wrote of Bruce Springsteen "His name is Bruce Springsteen. He's going to be rock's next superstar" long before major mags like Time and Newsweek got it.
I think many of us still expect to see her at the shows, big or small. That small woman with the blond pageboy with the oversize red glasses and ticket pinned to her jacket. You are there in spirit and I hope that the Rock Hall will follow Soeder's advice and induct Jane!

WARDELL QUEZERQUE SUCCUMBS TO DIABETES
New Orleans LA,
The amazing Wardell Quezerque who was the arranger to many of the great Crescent City funkmasters passed away in New Orleans due to complications from diabetes. He was the man behind the music, including the work of Allan Toussaint, Doctor John, The Meters, The Neville Brothers, Tammy Lynn, Ronnie Barron and so many others. His horn and string arrangements were uniquely what gave the Vieux Carre players that unique sound. He was known to challenge logic, at times putting as many as a dozen horns on stage during a live performance.
He first came to the public's attention with his signature work with Fats Domino and his legendary arrangements on Cosimo tracks in the late fifties and early sixties. He went on to work with such stellar NOLA legends as Harold Batiste. The Neville Brothers, Meters and Mac, as well as Barron. For almost five decades, he was the session arranger to use, when a producer wanted to cut tracks in New Orleans. Many of his recordings were considered revolutionary, including the use of multiple horns and strings on sessions, unknown in the early days of rock, but ultimately, his layers of sound became the studio norm. His work was legendary in the world of rock and he was the contractor to use for a session in the Crescent City.
