Bobby Hebb of `Sunny' fame dead at age 72
By JOE EDWARDS, Associated Press Writer
Nashville, Tenn. (AP) --
Bobby Hebb, whose 1966 pop music classic "Sunny" described a sincere smile from a woman that lifted the singer's burdens, died recently. He was 72.
Family members and a funeral home spokeswoman said Hebb died at Centennial Medical Center. Friends said he had lung cancer.
"Sunny" also was recorded by many other singers, including Marvin Gaye, Wilson Pickett and Jose Feliciano.
The song's key lines:
"Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain.
"Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain.
"The dark days are gone and the bright days are here.
"My sunny one shines so sincere.
"Sunny one so true, I love you."
Hebb had said in several interviews that he wrote "Sunny" in response to the slaying of his brother outside a Nashville nightclub and to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy a few days before.
On his 69th birthday in 2007, he recalled that he was living and performing in New York City at the time he wrote the song.
"I was intoxicated," Hebb told The Associated Press. "I came home and started playing the guitar. I looked up and saw what looked like a purple sky. I started writing because I'd never seen that before."
He included the song in his act at a bar called Brandy's and the audience liked it.
After a Japanese artist had a hit with the song in Asia and vibraphone player Dave Pike recorded it in the United States, Hebb recorded the vocal at Bell Sound in New York.
At the height of "Sunny" popularity, Hebb toured with the Beatles.
In a 2004 interview with The Tennessean newspaper, Hebb recalled that all four Beatles were nice.
"John (Lennon) and George (Harrison) were very quiet," he said. "But Ringo (Starr) and Paul (McCartney) were more active and easier to get to know. It was just something to be with those cats."
In 1971, Lou Rawls won a Grammy award for "A Natural Man," written by Hebb and Sandy Baron. Broadcast Music Incorporated said Tuesday there have been 7 million airings of "Sunny."
As recently as 2007, Hebb was still writing songs and had his own publishing company and record label, Hebb Cats.
Hebb was born to blind parents and raised in Nashville. He joined the Navy in 1955 where he played the trumpet in a jazz band.
In the 1950s Hebb also played and danced with Roy Acuff's country band, the Smoky Mountain Boys, and became one of the first black musicians to perform on the Grand Ole Opry show in Nashville.
Funeral services were pending. Survivors include a daughter and four sisters.

Dennis Wilson Biopic On The Way
by Tim Cashmere
The late, great Beach Boy Dennis Wilson will be the subject of a biopic that is currently in pre-production.
Filmmakers Randall Miller (director) and Jody Savin (writer) are planning a film that will focus on the later years of Wilson’s life leading up to his death in 1984 from drunk diving (yes, diving).
Miller and Savin are reportedly working closely with Wilson’s family and hope to have the film released in time for the group’s 50th anniversary next year.
“Dennis was a pained and tortured soul, yet brilliant and loved dearly by so many who knew him. This film has the makings of a tour-de-force performance in the hands of the right actor,” director Randall Miller was quoted as saying.
“The soundtrack will feature Dennis' music from Pacific Ocean Blue as well as previously unreleased Dennis Wilson music and music from the Beach Boys as well. The music is another character in the film and we are proud to have Rosenberger [of Warner-Chappel Music] and the Wilsons along as our producing partners to help guide the music.”
Wilson was the only member of the Beach Boys who actually surfed. He spent time hanging out with Charles Manson and the Manson Family and even recorded some of Manson’s music at his brother Brian Wilson’s studio.
Dennis Wilson rarely sang on stage with the Beach Boys, only sang lead on a few tracks and was not a regular songwriter for the band. He released one solo album ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’ in 1977. In 2008 the album he was working on at the time of his death, ‘Bambu’ was released, unfinished.

Come And Get It
The Best of Apple Records
First commercial multi-artist compilation in Apple’s history set for release on October 25th 2010
‘The Radha Krishna Temple’ Added to Historic Release of Original Apple Albums from 1968 to 1973 – Remastered CDs and Apple’s First Digital Downloads Due October 25th 2010
CD Bonus Tracks and Digital Download Extras Now Announced
The dazzling range of music originally issued by Apple Records between 1968 and 1973, which is now the subject of an unprecedented multi-album worldwide campaign starting October 25th – including remastered CDs (with bonus material revealed for the first time below) and Apple’s first digital downloads – will now be augmented by two additional titles: ‘Come and Get It: The Best Of Apple Records,’ the first commercially issued multi-artist compilation in the label’s history; and ‘The Radha Krishna Temple,’ the self-titled album of devotional music produced by George Harrison.
‘Come and Get It: The Best Of Apple Records,’ a 21 track compilation of singles, ranging from the folk-rooted tunes of Mary Hopkin and James Taylor, and the energetic rock of Badfinger (also The Iveys) and Jackie Lomax, to the deep soul of Doris Troy and Billy Preston, will also be released in the physical and digital marketplace on October 25th 2010.
‘Come and Get It‘ displays Apple’s vibrant years of musical experimentation in full flower, from bona fide hit singles to the cult classics of the catalogue, as represented by brass band The Black Dyke Mills Band, Cajun collective The Sundown Playboys, and more. Hot Chocolate (as ‘The Hot Chocolate Band’) makes an appearance, as does Ronnie Spector, Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band, Chris Hodge, Brute Force, and others.
Launched by The Beatles in 1968, Apple served as the new outlet for their own recordings as well as the music of an eclectic roster of artists who were all personally brought to the label by The Beatles (individually and/or collectively). In the revolutionary spirit of the times, Apple’s utopian artist-orientated mission celebrated diversity in a friendly creative environment. The result was a rainbow spectrum of music, from folk, rock and soul to The Modern Jazz Quartet and the work of contemporary British classical composer John Tavener.
As Apple Corps Ltd. and EMI Music prepare for the upcoming 17 album CD and digital download release, it is a reminder that the introduction of an artist on The Beatles’ record label was avidly followed by fans across the universe – then and now. Each of the albums has been digitally remastered at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London by the same dedicated team of engineers behind The Beatles’ recent remastered catalogue releases of 2009.

The Faces Debut Mick Hucknall-Led Lineup
by Tim Cashmere
The Faces debuted their new lineup last night featuring former Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall on vocals.
The band, currently featuring original members Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan as well as Mick Hucknall and ex Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, played a warm up show at the British Music Experience last night and Hucknall received rave reviews.
Rick Pearson of the Evening Standard in London described Hucknall’s vocals during show opener ‘Miss Judy’s Farm’ as “a vocal with more gravel than a driveway, Hucknall’s rock ‘n’ roll makeover was startling,” going on to say that with enough imagination “it could have almost been Stewart circa 1975.”
I wonder what is going through Rod’s head right now?
Faces set list:
“Miss Judy’s Farm”
“Had Me A Real Good Time”
“Too Bad”
“Ooh La La”
“I Wish It Would Rain”
“Maybe I’m Amazed”
“Flying”
“Cindy Incidentally”
“I’m Losing You”
“I’d Rather Go Blind”
Encore:
“Pool Hall Richard”
“Stay With Me”

Reimagine
Wouldn’t it be nice to hear Brian Wilson sing George Gershwin?
By Al Kooper / Kooper’s Corner | Sunday, August 15, 2010 | http://www.bostonherald.com
In 1962, who could have imagined “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin”?
The answer is any member of the Wilson family, who all grew up listening to George Gershwin, the composer of “Summertime” and so many other indelible American classics.
Wilson has claimed his first musical memory is “Rhapsody in Blue,” the opener of his new album, which arrives in stores Tuesday. Arranged by Wilson as an a cappella jaunt, it is a merry blend of Wilson’s patented harmonies and Gershwin’s landmark composition. This segues into a previously unfinished Gershwin tune, “The Like in I Love You,” which Wilson and his lyricist/drummer, Scott Bennett, completed. If it sounds like “Pet Sounds,” why shouldn’t it?
The standout feature is the excellence of Wilson’s vocals. During the last few years, his live singing has run the gamut from shaky to soaring. “Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin” proves he still has the abilities of his Beach Boys youth totally intact and he’s happy to share them.
Not that the arrangements are not also remarkable. They are sublime and reference both Gershwin and Wilson. As a result, these mostly oft-recorded tunes take on stunning new lives. Take “I Got Rhythm,” for instance. After a non-rhythmical intro a la Wilson’s take on “Rhapsody In Blue,” the drums and guitars echo the groove from the Beach Boys standard “Catch a Wave.” And it works. Who would have guessed?
An unusual choice is “I Loves You Porgy,” usually sung by the female African-American Bess character in Gershwin’s classic 1935 musical. Wilson introduces no gender changes. He sings his plaintive confession of love to a man. Not a chance of that happening in 1962! The times they have a-changed.
The instrumental version of “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’ ” that follows owes a nod to “Help Me, Rhonda,” no doubt the first time those two classics have been paired. And so it goes on for 13 terrific tracks (“Rhapsody” is reprised as the 14th). As a true Brian Wilson fan - my favorite album of all time is “Pet Sounds” - I am deliriously happy, but not surprised by this fortuitous collaboration. This is an album to enjoy and share with your friends as well as your parents, whether they grew up with Wilson or Gershwin.
The song choices are ’s wonderful and there is something for everyone - except maybe Sid Vicious (but he covered Paul Anka’s “My Way,” so perhaps he was on his way to Gershwin before he so awkwardly exited this planet).
Heavy credit must be given to all who participated: musicians, orchestrators, recording-mixing-and mastering engineers, singers, and Disney for bankrolling this project. I believe a parade of Grammys will follow if Jethro Tull doesn’t put out an album this year.
Seriously, this is nothing less than a timeless treasure. Don’t lose a moment in picking up these good Gershwin vibrations.
Legendary musician and Somerville resident Al Kooper’s accomplishments include recording with Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, founding Blood Sweat & Tears, and discovering and producing Lynyrd Skynyrd. See Al Kooper and the Funky Faculty perform free, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. at the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival.

BACHMAN & TURNER’S SECRET TO GOOD MUSIC
Last week, Bachman & Turner released the video to “Rollin’ Along,” the first single off their upcoming self-titled album. The pair expects the track to be a hit, and that’s because they feel they know what it takes to make a good song. Randy Bachman filled us in on their secret.
(Cut #2) “It’s this flow that kind of comes through you that you’re not even conscious of that other people sense the easy going of it and if it’s hard going, they sense that it’s hard going. How many great meals have you had that have three ingredients: beans, rice and cheese, compared to something with 20 ingredients and things grown in mountain tops in Tibet and flown in, big deal. You like it, you rock out, you eat it, it’s a pierogi, it’s a knish, whatever it is, it’s great! It’s like that with music, a couple simple ingredients.”
Bachman & Turner’s album is due out on September 7th. Check out the video and stay up to date at BachmanAndTurner.com.
MELLENCAMP’S ALBUM OUT TOMORROW
Tomorrow, fans can pick up No Better Than This, John Mellencamp’s latest album. John called the record “as American folk as [he’s] ever been.” Mellencamp recorded the set during breaks from his 2009 tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. Using a 1955 Ampex portable recording machine and one microphone, John recorded the album at various historic places in Savannah, Georgia; Memphis, Tennessee; San Antonio, Texas and elsewhere. It was recorded in mono, the same way the classic folk and blues recordings were done in the ‘30s and ‘40s. Grab your copy of the T Bone Burnett-produced No Better Than This tomorrow.

OZZY TALKS ABOUT A BLACK SABBATH REUNION
Lately, there has been a lot of talk about a Black Sabbath reunion. Well we asked the band’s singer, Ozzy Osbourne, what he thought the chances were of getting the original group back together. Here’s what the Prince of Darkness had to say.
(Cut #1) “Well I never say never anymore. We’re all talking. I will not reform Black Sabbath not unless the original members… it’s gotta be the four of us, for better or for worse. I would dearly, dearly, before my time’s up, like to do the ultimate Black Sabbath album. You know, it’s very, very possible but not for the next 18 months or so because I’ve got my own thing to do for 18 months then I’m gonna do another album and…I dunno. It’s very, very possible.”
In the meantime, fans of Ozzy can see him perform at this year’s Ozzfest along with Motley Crue, Halford and many other groups. The touring festival gets underway tomorrow in Devore, California. Get all the dates at Ozzfest.com.
MELLENCAMP ON TAVIS SMILEY EVERY DAY NEXT WEEK
Tuesday sees the release of John Mellencamp’s new album, No Better Than This, and starting on Monday, the singer will perform tracks from the effort on the Tavis Smiley show on PBS. Every night next week, John will play a song from the record and discuss his musical journey with the host. Find out when the show airs in your area at PBS.org/Tavis.
• Both John and Tavis are from Indiana.
• John’s tour kicks off on October 29th at Indiana University, Tavis’ alma mater.
KISS RECORDING SONG FOR McCARTNEY TRIBUTE
There is a Paul McCartney tribute album in the works and Kiss are contributing a song to it. The band told Weekender magazine that they recently recorded a version of the Wings track “Venus and Mars” for the effort. No word yet on when the tribute album is due out but you can read more at TheWeekender.com.
WHAT ELSE DOES DAVID CROSBY WANT TO DO?
David Crosby turns 69 years old. With nearly seven decades under his belt, the singer has accomplished a fair amount. But is there anything he hasn’t done but would still like to do? He filled us in.
(Cut #2) “Yeah, there are some things I’d really like to do. I would’ve liked to go a lot further as a pilot, probably get rated in a jet. I think that would’ve been great. I can’t really afford it. I had to sell the plane that I did have. I would love to sail around the world because I’ve been sailing now for 54 years and I love it dearly and that’s an adventure that I would love to go on with my son. There’s a lot of stuff to do. Lots of music still to make.”
BLACK CROWES’ CROWEOLOGY DEBUTS AT 13
The Black Crowes’ latest release, Croweology, debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart. The double-disc set features all acoustic material from throughout the band’s career. 21-thousand copies of the album were sold during its first week out. Learn more at BlackCrowes.com.
TONY IOMMI’S GUITAR STOLEN
At last month’s High Voltage Festival in London, Heaven & Hell played a tribute performance to their late singer, Ronnie James Dio, and it turns out that after the show, someone stole Tony Iommi’s guitar. According to fan site Black-Sabbath.com, the rocker’s Iommi SG guitar was taken after the band’s set. If you have any info about the guitar’s whereabouts, email Tony’s webmaster at Iommi.com. A reward is being offered for the instrument’s return.
BONHAM STILL GETS EMOTIONAL ABOUT HIS FATHER
Later this year, Jason Bonham will hit the road with a new production he’s created called the Led Zeppelin Experience. The son of late-Zep drummer John Bonham plans to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his father’s death by performing some of the band’s greatest hits, showing early footage of the group and telling stories about his dad. Jason explained to us why he’ll have to use voiceover for the anecdotes.
(Cut #1) “Each story, as I’ve repeated them or talked about them or tried to write them down, I get kind of caught in the moment and it’s been hard. So I know that one thing for sure, I will have to narrate the pieces I want and the stories I want cause I don’t think that I’ll be able to do it, even 30 years on, to get through it without an emotional night.”
More details about the Led Zeppelin Experience, including tour dates at JBLZE.com.
DVDS TO SHOW BEATLES ON SULLIVAN
On February 9th, 1964, The Beatles took the stage on the Ed Sullivan Show and 76-million Americans tuned in. Now, almost 50 years later, the band’s legendary appearances on the program are coming out on DVD. On September 7th, the four complete Sullivan shows with the Fab Four will hit shelves as a DVD set. The 250-minute discs, aptly called The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring the Beatles, also boast 13 minutes of additional footage, including a previously unaired interview Sullivan did with the Beatles in London, a commercial for Beatles dolls by Sullivan and more.
NEW ELVIS EXHIBIT COMING TO THE ROCK HALL
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame turns 15 this year and they’ll celebrate with a new Elvis Presley exhibit. It’s called Elvis 1956: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer and features photos of a 21-year-old King in the studio and at home, just before he became a worldwide star. Thirty artifacts from Graceland will also be on display at the museum. The exhibit opens on September 13th and you can learn more at RockHall.com.
• Elvis was among the Rock Hall’s inaugural class of inductees in 1986. Others in that class include Ray Charles, James Brown, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers and Jerry Lee Lewis.
ALLMAN BROTHERS ANNOUNCE FALL TOUR DATES
The Allman Brothers have announced fall tour dates, which will mark the first time Gregg Allman will take the stage with the group since he underwent a liver transplant in June. The singer said he’s “been itching to play” since the operation and starting on November 18th, he’ll get the chance to with the band. They’ll kick off the trek of intimate shows with three nights in Boston’s Orpheum Theatre. Before then, Gregg will play a pair of solo gigs at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in New Brunswick, Canada. Learn more at AllmanBrothersBand.com.
SCORSESE USES STONES SONG IN NEW AD FILM
Martin Scorsese has directed a short advertising film for a new Chanel men’s fragrance and the famed director used a Rolling Stones song in the flick. “She Said Yeah” off the band’s 1965 album December’s Children serves as the soundtrack to the movie for Bleu De Chanel. The advertising film is expected to be on Chanel’s website by the end of the month. Meanwhile, the song, along with a video of the band singing it live in 1965, is now available on iTunes.
• Scorsese previously used the Stones’ music in his movies Goodfellas, Mean Streets and The Departed. He also directed the 2008 concert film Shine a Light.
GET LES PAUL’S CELEBRITY GIFT GUITARS
Late guitar innovator Les Paul was not only legendary, he was also very generous, giving away many a signed instrument to people. However, since Paul or his producer-friend Ron Lovely would only hand deliver his guitar gifts, some never made it to famous recipients, and those axes are now going up for auction. Among them are guitars Les autographed for the likes of Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan and even Lindsay Lohan. The instruments are expected to go for between three-thousand and 150-thousand dollars. Learn more at Independent.co.uk.
VAN HALEN WORKING ON NEW MUSIC
Van Halen previously denied reports that they were in the studio working on a new album but now, the group’s label has released a statement saying that they are indeed working on new music. The statement goes on to say that Van Halen will release a new album in 2011. That will mark the group’s first record since 1998 and their first with singer David Lee Roth since 1984. The latest lineup also includes Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang on bass. Meanwhile, Live Nation executive chairman Irving Azoff mentioned on an earnings call last week that the band was expected to tour next year. Read more at Billboard.com.
IAN ANDERSON WISHES HE COULD PLAY THE VIOLA
Jethro Tull singer Ian Anderson turned 63. During his years playing music, the rocker has become proficient on a few instruments, namely the guitar and of course, the flute. But is there anything the rocker wants to learn but hasn’t yet?
(Cut #1) “I would love to play violin or viola, but it’s just not something that’s ever gonna happen, it’s way too difficult. The flute’s a relatively easy instrument, I’d only had a flute in my hands for about seven months by the time we recorded the first Jethro Tull album, but seven months on the violin and you’re still going to be sending your neighbors crazy and people running and screaming from any room that you attempt to play in.”
WATERS TALKS ON FACEBOOK
Pink Floyd fans should keep an eye on Roger Waters’ Facebook page. The rocker is uploading videos of himself discussing a number of different subjects. The latest clips have Waters talking about the nature of celebrity, plus the concept of “Us and Them.” Check out those videos and more at Facebook.com/RogerWaters.
YOKO ONO TALKS ABOUT NEW JOHN LENNON DOC
Some filmmakers are putting together a movie that documents John Lennon’s last decade, which he spent in New York City. The flick is called LennonNYC and at a press conference in L-A, Yoko Ono discussed the movie and previewed scenes from it. She spoke about the Big Apple calling it “a very strange city” and added, “It was his love and it was his death.” The film premieres on November 22nd on American Masters on PBS.
NO BEATLES MUSIC ON iTUNES ANY TIME SOON
Beatles fans wanting the Fab Four’s music to hit iTunes better settle in for a long wait. Yoko Ono told Billboard that Apple Corps, the Beatles’ holding company, hasn’t been able to agree on terms with EMI, which licenses the band’s music. The 77-year-old widow of John Lennon said that “there’s just an element that we’re not very happy about,” adding with a laugh, “Don’t hold your breath… for anything.”
DALI’S PIECE OF ALICE COOPER GOING ON DISPLAY

MORE RELEASES FROM THE HENDRIX ESTATE
Jimi Hendrix’s estate plans to release more reissues and rarities from the guitar legend. After a first round of releases earlier this year, in October, a second set of deluxe reissues will hit shelves. They include Jimi’s Woodstock performance, a collection of Hendrix’s U-K television and radio appearances, a blues collection, plus a new four-disc compilation called West Coast Seattle Boy, a career-spanning package with demos, alternate takes, previously unreleased recordings and a documentary. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the releases too. They’re out on October 19th.
SEE SPRINGSTEEN’S LYRICAL REFERENCES

Hello punman David -
Thanks for word on the upcoming parole request of John Lennon's
(un-named) assassin.
The killer's mom can refer to him by his given name; I believe the
rest of us will be more comfortable referring to him only as 'dirtbag'.
Or better yet, just remembering the life and contributions of John Lennon.

TROY “TROMBONE SHORTY” ANDREWS JOINS JEFF BECK’S U.K. TOUR
Austin City Limits will air the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, with special guest Ivan Neville on October 2
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Performing on Jeff Beck’s U.K. tour is the latest highlight in Trombone Shorty’s milestone year. His career highlights date back to sitting in with Bo Diddley at the ripe age of four, but this year, powered by his Verve Forecast debut, Backatown, is one for the record books for Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. The CD entered the Contemporary Jazz Album chart at # 1, spending nine weeks there, before the new Herbie Hancock CD finally broke his hold on the top slot.
Whirlwind touring with one highlight after another continues this summer and fall as Trombone Shorty heads to six countries in Europe for his first full fledged tour of the continent highlighted by Festival appearances, headline shows and a coveted slot supporting Jeff Beck's U.K. tour. When asked about the tour, Troy said “It’s an honor to be chosen to support a legendary genius musician like Jeff Beck on his tour.”
Jeff Beck and Trombone Shorty had met before. Beck played the New Orleans Jazz Festival earlier this year. He was told not to miss Trombone Shorty’s sold-out show at Tipitina’s, despite the late 2:30 a.m. start. Shorty’s Tipitina’s show, which also drew celebrity fans Nicolas Cage and Tim Robbins, was a revelation for Beck and his manager, Harvey Goldsmith. When Mr. Beck performed a special birthday tribute to Les Paul at New York’s Iridium in early June, Trombone Shorty was invited to join the band for the night, an opportunity envied by the “invitation only” audience who represented much of the cream of America's musicians including no shortage of guitar heroes.
Their relationship continues in October when Trombone Shorty and his Orleans Avenue band join Jeff Beck on his U.K. tour as part of a six-country tour of Europe. Dates with Jeff Beck are as follows:
Oct. 15 Bournemouth, BIC
Oct. 16 Brighton, Brighton Centre
Oct. 17 Birmingham, Symphony Hall
Oct. 19 Preston, Guildhall
Oct. 20 Glasgow, Clyde Auditorium
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue did two complete knockout shows this past weekend for their Japanese debut at the acclaimed Fuji Rock Festival. In August, the band is off to Brazil for their first shows in Rio and Sao Paolo, followed by European dates for most of the month of October.
They’ll retain a strong U.S. presence as Austin City Limits will air a recently taped appearance on October 23. Ivan Neville joined Orleans Avenue for the taping, which will be packaged for airing on PBS stations with a performance by Alejandro Escovedo.
Trombone Shorty has been criss-crossing the U.S., spreading the music he has dubbed “Supafunkrock” since the release of Backatown. In addition to headlining shows and playing summer festivals across North America, from Bonnaroo to the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl (on consecutive days yet), Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue recently made their late-night TV debut on Late Night With David Letterman, in early June. Of all this touring, Troy commented that “it’s a complete blessing to bring the music from Tremé and share it with the world.”
The band’s song “Hurricane Season” can be heard weekly on MTV’s The Real World, New Orleans as the opening title song. And all this is following close on the heels of Troy’s recurring role as a significant character on HBO’s Emmy-nominated Treme, where he played himself in four episodes.

Four never-before-released live albums by Jefferson Airplane coming on Collectors' Choice Music LiveShare
Four live albums include original vocalist Signe Anderson’s farewell show and Grace Slick’s first show, both at the Fillmore in 1966
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The argument rages on, but for many music fans in the ’60s, the best live band from the Bay Area was Jefferson Airplane. Formed during the summer of 1965 in San Francisco, the group triumphed in 1967 with Surrealistic Pillow, one of the key recordings of the Summer of Love, containing the hits “Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit” and “Today.” The Airplane featured three master instrumentalists (Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Spencer Dryden) and three vocalists: Grace Slick (replacing original singer Signe Anderson in 1966), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner. The Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees made a total of eight studio albums and released a smattering of live albums including 1969’s Bless Its Pointed Little Head.
But what most fans don’t know is that there are vast reserves of never-released live material by Jefferson Airplane capturing key moments in their history. On October 26, 2010, Collectors’ Choice Music Live will release four previously unreleased live albums: Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66 Late Show — Signe’s Farewell, Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66 Early & Late Shows — Grace’s Debut, Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 11/25/66 & 11/27/66 — We Have Ignition, and Return to the Matrix 2/1/68.
The first three releases document the astonishing growth of the band, and follow the near-seamless absorption of Grace Slick’s voice and material into the Airplane’s sound just as they were entering the studio to record Surrealistic Pillow. The fourth release captures the group triumphantly returning to their home turf at Marty Balin’s club The Matrix for a relaxed, exploratory set in an intimate setting, performing material from their first four albums, including Crown of Creation, seven months before its release. Taken together, the four releases confirm that at its best, when Jorma was soaring, Jack rumbling and the three voices joining in ecstatic melisma, no other band could ascend to the heights attained by the Airplane. Hand-picked by a team of devotees, annotated by frequent Airplane flyer Craig Fenton (author of the book Take Me To A Circus Tent: The Jefferson Airplane Flight Manual), and featuring rare photos inside handsome digi-packs, these concerts distill and express the dream and promise of the Haight-Ashbury scene.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66 Late Show — Signe’s Farewell: The Grace Slick era of the Airplane has understandably received most of the attention paid the band over the years. But they had released a good album (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off) and were already a powerful live outfit before Slick came aboard. The 10/15/66 release not only marks the first appearance on CD of a live recording featuring Signe Anderson with the band, but also her very last show. Both Marty Balin and the Fillmore’s Bill Graham give her shout-outs. Songs include “3/5ths of a Mile in Ten Seconds,” “Tobacco Road,” “Midnight Hour,” “High Flyin’ Bird” and “Chauffeur Blues” (which Grace never performed out of respect for Signe, who’d made the old blues tune her own). It was the end of an era. But a new one was about to begin the very next day, and is the subject of the 10/16/66 release.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 10/16/66 Early & Late Shows — Grace’s Debut: The 10/16/66 volume chronicles the first set of concerts featuring Grace Slick as a member of the Airplane, a mere day after Signe Anderson officially left the band. The band has yet to add the material Slick brought to the band (“Somebody To Love” and “White Rabbit) to the set list, but Grace’s harmony work with Marty and Paul is impressive, and you can literally hear her confidence growing from the first set to the second. The album contains “The Other Side of This Life,” “Let Me In,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” “Run Around” and “High Flying Bird,” plus versions of “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds” and “Tobacco Road” with the new line-up, and Leiber & Stoller’s “Kansas City,” which has never appeared on any Airplane studio or live album. Surrealistic Pillow photographer Herbie Greene contributes photos. Things would never be the same for the band or for ’60s rock.
• Live at the Fillmore Auditorium 11/25/66 & 11/27/66 — We Have Ignition: CCM Live subtitled these shows “We Have Ignition” as they believe this is when the Airplane transformed from a high-flying bird into a psychedelic spaceship (but not yet a Starship.) It’s difficult to believe, when comparing these November shows with Grace’s live debut on 10/16/66, that only six weeks have elapsed. Not only has the band (particularly guitarist Jorma Kaukonen) progressed as musicians, but the infusion of Surrealistic Pillow material some four months before the album hit the stores shifts the focus of this folk-rock band to rock. Included are “Plastic Fantastic Lover,” “High Flyin’ Bird,” “Bringing Me Down,” “ D.C.B.A-25,” “My Best Friend,” “Go to Her,” “She Has Funny Cars,” “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds,” “Skip Spence’s “J.P.P. McStep B Blues,” “White Rabbit,” “Today” and more. Two rarities are a mind blowing, 9:45-minute version of “The Other Side of Life” (performed for a photo session) that neither its author, the folk singer-songwriter Fred Neil, nor the band could ever have anticipated, and the only known recording of an instrumental known in some quarters as “My Grandfather’s Clock.” This is the Airplane at its early apex.
• Return to the Matrix 2/1/68: The Airplane returned to the first club they ever played, the Matrix, in 1968 for a 103-minute show at the height of their commercial prowess. They band premiered two songs from the Crown of Creation album (which was months away from being released): “Share a Little Joke” and an instrumental version of “Ice Cream Phoenix.” They also performed “Blues From an Airplane,” a song from its first (pre-Slick) album. Also here: “Somebody to Love,” “Young Girl Sunday Blues,” “She Has Funny Cars,” “Two Heads,” “Martha,” “Kansas City,” “Other Side of this Life,” “Today,” “Won’t You Try/Saturday Afternoon,” “It’s No Secret,” “Watch Her Ride,” “Plastic Fantastic Lover,” “Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil,” “White Rabbit,” “Fat Angel” and “3/5ths of a Mile in 10 Seconds.”

JOE LOUIS WALKER LAUNCHES A BOATLOAD OF BLUES ON NEW STONY PLAIN CD, BLUES CONSPIRACY: LIVE ON THE LEGENDARY RHYTHM & BLUES CRUISE, COMING SEPTEMBER 28
EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces a September 28 release date for multiple Grammy and Blues Music Award-winner Joe Louis Walker’s new CD, Blues Conspiracy: Live on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, featuring special guests Johnny Winter, Duke Robillard, Tommy Castro, Kenny Neal, Tab Benoit and a host of other blues all-stars. Stony Plain Records is distributed in the U.S. by ADA.
Recorded live during the most recent Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise earlier this year,
Blues Conspiracy follows on the heels of Walker’s Between a Rock and the Blues CD, which won the coveted “Album of the Year” at the Blues Music Awards in May. Joe also recently won the 2010 Living Blues magazine Critics’ Poll as “Most Outstanding Musician (Guitar).”
The truly inspired performances captured on Blues Conspiracy: Live on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise showcase a wide assortment of songs originating from his debut 1987 release,Cold Is the Night (“Ten More Shows to Play”) and its critically-acclaimed follow-up, The Gift (“747”); to four tracks from his last two albums, Witness to the Blues (“Sugar Mama” and “It’s a Shame”) and Between a Rock and the Blues (“Eyes Like a Cat” and “Tell Me Why”).
Among its many highlights, the CD boasts some truly magical pairings, as on “Ain’t that Cold,” where Walker and the great Johnny Winter trade some amazing energized guitar licks; the soul-drenched ballad, “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry,” with Walker, Curtis Salgado and Mike Finnigan’s earth-shaking vocal testifying; the jumping “Eyes Like a Cat,” with Tommy Castro, Tom Poole, Joanna Bogart and Keith Crossan taking that song to new heights; and the Windy City classic, “Born in Chicago,” where Walker is joined by harmonica whiz Jason Ricci and guitarists Nick Moss and Paris Slim for a Southside showdown that just won’t let up.
“I would like to thank all the great musicians involved in this project for giving their heart, soul and talent to this collaboration,” says Walker. “This was not about money, ego and so called fame. It was about the music. For me, it was the completion of two of my earlier projects: the first was Live At Slims Vol. 1 & 2; and the second was Great Guitars. Many times I’ve been asked if, and when, I would reprise these projects. Well, here it is. I do believe this is a continuation of what I started. As you can see, these artists are a mixture of ages and styles. The one thread running through us all is the blues. For all the fans of live music, what you hear on this CD is what the audience heard at the performances. There are no enhancements or overdubs. In other words, what you hear is what it was and what it is. What a tribute to the quality of all the wonderful musicians involved.”
