Phoebe Ann Laub was born on July 17, 1952. She was briefly married in the early 70s and gave birth to daughter Valerie who as born with brain damage. Phoebe cared for Valerie all of her life. Valarie died at age 31 in 2007.
The first Phoebe Snow album was released on Shelter Records, owned by Leon Russell. Her first major hit was ‘Poetry Man’ in 1975. It reached no. 5 in the USA. That same year she recorded ‘Gone At Last’ with Paul Simon for his ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ album.
Her 1978 album ‘Against The Grain’ featured ‘Every Night’. Paul McCartney originally released his version on his 1970 ‘McCartney’ album.
Phoebe’s last chart appearance was in 1989 with her album ‘Something Real’ (no. 29, USA) but then she only occasionally recorded music or performed live. One of those live appearances was for Bill and Hilary Clinton at Camp David in 1999. She also sang at Howard Stern’s wedding in 2008.

Hazel Dickens, Bluegrass singer-songwriter, Dies at 75
Bill Friskics-Warren, New York Times
Hazel Dickens, a clarion-voiced advocate for coal miners and working people and a pioneer among women in bluegrass music, died Friday in Washington. She was 75.
The West Virginian was financier Warren Hellman's original inspiration for creating the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco, where she was featured annually. She died from complications of pneumonia, said Ken Irwin, her longtime friend and the founder of Rounder Records, her label for more than four decades.
Hellman said Ms. Dickens not only wrote wonderful songs, but also was true to the liberal beliefs she espoused in them.
"It didn't matter whether you were Warren Hellman or the head of the teachers' union, she stuck to her point," he said. "We had some terrific arguments over the years. I don't know how many times she called me 'Rich Man.' "
Ms. Dickens' initial impact came as a member of Hazel and Alice, a vocal and instrumental duo with Alice Gerrard, a classically trained singer with a passion for the American vernacular music on which Ms. Dickens was raised. Featuring Ms. Dickens on upright bass and Gerrard on acoustic guitar, Hazel and Alice toured widely on the folk and bluegrass circuits during the 1960s and '70s, captivating audiences with their bold, forceful harmonies and their empathetic approach to songs of struggle and heartbreak.
Long revered by feminists, Ms. Dickens' music, and especially her songwriting, assumed an even more political cast almost as soon as she began pursuing a solo career in the wake of the duo's breakup in 1976. Several of her songs, including "Coal Tattoo" and the rousing organizer's anthem "They'll Never Keep Us Down," served as the musical voice of conscience for Barbara Kopple's Oscar-winning 1976 documentary, "Harlan County, U.S.A."
Whether she performed solo or with a country-style band, Ms. Dickens' mountain inflection and delivery were inimitable, and never so much as when she sang a cappella on "Black Lung," a harrowing dirge she wrote for her oldest brother, who died of that disease. In 1987 she sang another a cappella ballad, "Hills of Galilee," during a funeral scene in "Matewan," John Sayles' movie about coal mining in Appalachia.
Hazel Jane Dickens was born June 1, 1935, in Mercer County, W.Va. One of 11 children, she grew up in a family whose survival depended on the coal industry. Her father, a Primitive Baptist preacher and a forceful singer, hauled timber to feed the household. Her brothers were miners and one of her sisters cleaned house for a supervisor at the mines. The music they sang in church and heard on the radio, particularly the music of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, offered one of their few diversions. A brother is her only immediate survivor.
One of her greatest admirers was certainly Hellman, who made her a central attraction of his bluegrass festival in Golden Gate Park.
"It couldn't happen anywhere in the world but in San Francisco," Ms. Dickens once said of the event. "This crazy millionaire putting on these great big festivals for free."
Ms. Dickens gave her final public performance March 16 at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, which typically attracts new music and a younger crowd.
"She pinned them to the wall, buddy, I'm not kidding you," said Dudley Connell, who played guitar alongside her that night. "My guess is their mouths are still open."
Hellman also saw her perform in Austin.
"I was stunned," he said. "Her show was terrific. She was in a wheelchair, but her voice was terrific."
Ms. Dickens' music and memory will live on at the festival, Hellman said. This year's event, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, will be dedicated to her, one of the stages will probably be named in her memory, and artists will be encouraged to perform her songs.

Beach Boys Reunion!
That's the news that millions of fellow Beach Boys fans have been waiting years to hear, but let's not get too excited just yet: This reunion appears to be a one-time-only occasion for charity. It's no secret that the remaining members of the seminal '60s band of beach brothers (and cousins and close friends) have been mired in legal estrangement for many years. Now, in the name of Japan earthquake and tsunami relief, original Beach Boy Al Jardine has succeeded in bridging that gap by convincing his former bandmates Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston to contribute vocals for a charity single, which was pressed on vinyl. Vintage Vinyl News (of course) reports that side one of the record is "Don't Fight the Sea," which was originally recorded for Jardine's 2010 solo album A Postcard From California. The song, written by Jardine and Terry "Seasons in the Sun" Jacks , has now been augmented by the voices of the other three surviving Beach Boys -- Wilson, Love and Johnston -- along with a vocal track from the late Carl Wilson. The "B" side is an a cappella mix of the 1968 Beach Boys song "Friends." All proceeds will go to the Red Cross for Japanese aid.
Attention, collectors: The first 1,000 copies of the single have been pressed in white vinyl with a red label, resembling the Japanese flag, and approximately 90 of those will be signed by all four remaining Beach Boys! One of these rare white vinyl singles sold for $192.50, and auctions are underway on a couple other copies as you read this.

IAN ANDERSON’S OUT OF THIS WORLD CONCERT
When worldwide fame and notoriety have been achieved, taking your music into outer space is the only place left to go.
On April 12th Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson took part in a duet with US astronaut Colonel Catherine Coleman to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin’s first manned space flight in 1961.
However, this duet is no ordinary collaboration. Whilst Anderson was live on stage in Perm, Russia, Coleman was in orbit in the International Space Station as she contributed to Ian’s truly out of this world concert.
Coleman’s part of the performance was screened by video link to the audience in Perm from somewhere in the galaxy as part of this gravity defying gig.
The pair played an excerpt from Bouree from Tull's STAND UP album.
Coleman has been practicing her Ian Anderson trademark of playing the flute whilst standing (or in her case floating) on one leg. For 3 months, Anderson's flute accompanied Cady Coleman and her own flute in orbit allowing her to perfect her Anderson stance ahead of the duet.

The movie includes interviews with Ozzy’s Black Sabbath bandmates Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Tony Iommi, which might make viewers wonder about if a reunion will ever happen. Here’s what Ozzy told us.

I mean, I’ve spoken to Tony Iommi, I speak to Bill from time to time, I haven’t spoken to Geezer for a while but if it’s meant to happen, it’ll happen, if it does in one figuration I suppose we manage to go out. I don’t want to say too much really because I don’t really know.”
RONNIE WOOD TALKS STONES’ FUTURE, TEETH
Ronnie Wood is revealing some interesting things to England’s The Guardian. For one thing, the Rolling Stones guitarist said Keith Richards once put his teeth back in using superglue. He then went on to discuss the band’s future plans saying that they’re all busy with their own stuff - Charlie Watts has a jazz band and solo stuff, Mick is “doing s**t” and Keith is “contemplating his navel and playing with different people and reading.” However, Ron says they all want to work together again.
TIDBIT: Adults have 32 teeth.

Would they take the play elsewhere now that it’s done on Broadway? Armstrong said, “We’d take anywhere they will have us.”

“LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS” LYRICS UP FOR BIDS
Do you have a ton of money to spend on that Beatles fan in your life? Then listen up because John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” are up for auction. They’re expected to sell for 200-thousand dollars. It’s not just the lyrics on the piece of paper either – there’s also a sketch of four people in a room with windows that Lennon did. It goes under the gavel in mid-May in Beverly Hills.
TIDBIT: When the song was released in 1967, many people believed it was about LSD, especially since those are the capitalized letters in the title. The rocker’s former girlfriend, Libby Gausden, who owned the painting, had offered over three-thousand dollars for its safe return. TIDBIT: The song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” was written in 1908.
DAVID LEE ROTH FAN REUNITED WITH CAMERA
Thanks to the Internet, a David Lee Roth fan who lost his camera during the singer’s 1999 concert in Austin is getting it back. Greg Aulick filled his disposable camera with shots of the rocker but lost it because he had “a lot of Jack Daniels that night calming [him] down.” However, another fan found the camera and took it home and developed the shots. He forgot about them until last year, when he used Facebook and YouTube to find the rightful owner. Greg now has his pictures back. Read more at CBS8.com.
TIDBIT: In the YouTube video, Greg is referred to as the “mystery rocker.”
GROHL OWES IT ALL TO NIRVANA
He doesn’t talk to the press about Kurt Cobain very often, but Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl told NME that he owes everything to the late singer and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic. Many speculate that the song “I Should Have Known,” off the new Foo Fighters album, is about Cobain and issues Grohl still struggles with after his death.
PAPERS ACCUSE VAN MORRISON OF HAVING A LOVE CHILD
Two British newspapers are claiming they have evidence that proves that the married Van Morrison had a child with his mistress, GiGi Lee, in late 2009. Rumors of a child began in 2009 when the singer’s website published an announcement of the birth of “little Van,” something Morrison’s reps blamed on a hacker who put it on the website. Van had won an injunction against the papers publishing evidence that said otherwise, but the injunction was just overturned and the papers are ready to print a story that says GiGi posted the baby news and is upset Van lied about it. Morrison’s reps said he didn’t even know Lee, but according to the papers, have since learned that he did know her. The 65-year-old Van and his wife, Michelle, have been married for more than 15 years.

Iggy Pop Performs On American Idol
Hell has frozen over. Iggy Pop is now Iggy Idol. Iggy Pop has performed on American Idol.
Pop performed one of his biggest solo hits ‘Real Wild Child’ on American Idol recently.
A survey conducted after the Pop performance by CBS Television has place the appearance at “75% ridiculous” over “25% awesome” but is unlikely Pop would care.
Artist Niagara Detroit, who once fronted the band Destroy All Monsters with the Asheton brothers after the demise of The Stooges, put it all into perspective in a Facebook posting. “Iggy sold out on American Idol? Exposure is all he ever wanted,” she posted on Facebook.
”How about the time the Stooges performed Madonna songs at the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Pissed Ronnie off! Iggy wanted the
exposure and prevailed. So get over your Iggy cult fetish, he belongs
to the great unwashed masses...”
The 63-year rock star never really found fame in his day. His album with The Stooges has influenced a generation of artists but did not sell well at the time of release.
‘Real Wild Child’ however had a much better story.
‘Real Wild Child’ is actually an Australian rock classic originally titled ‘Wild One’. Johnny O’Keefe, Australia’s greatest star of the rock and roll era, wrote the song in 1958. O’Keefe was to Australia was Elvis was to America.
O’Keefe co-wrote the song with Sydney DJ Tony Withers and Dave Owens.
‘Real Wild Child’ was first released as ‘Wild One’ on O’Keefe’s ‘Shakin’ at the Stadium’ E.P. in 1958. It was first retitled ‘Real Wild Child’ for a cover by Jerry Allison from The Crickets in 1958. Jerry Lee Lewis also recorded the song in 1958 but didn’t release it until 1974.
Other artists who have covered the O’Keefe classic include Lou Reed, Status Quo, Joan Jett and Suzi Quatro.

EXCLUSIVE: Next Neil Young Album Is A Treasure
By Paul Cashmere
The next Neil Young album will be Volume 9 in his Archive series sourced from the 1984/1985 live recordings with the International Harvesters.
The album is titled ‘A Treasure’. It features many of the songs from the 1985 country album ‘Old Ways’ plus some previously unreleased tracks.
The short-lived International Harvesters band toured the world in the mid-80s. It included Neil’s first-ever Australian tour. About the band Neil says, “In the mid 80s I played with Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle. He was great. Ben Keith, the late, great Ben Keith. We got Spooner Oldham on piano on some of the cuts, on the great majority of the cuts. We also have Tim Drummond on bass who is still on the planet and rocking. Tim Drummond is a great bass player, he is amazing and so is Joe Allen. The last songs on the album have Joe Allen on the bass starting around ‘Southern Pacific”.
On previous Neil Young Archive DVD and Blu-Ray releases, Neil has paid little attention to the video, preferring to use the technology as an audio platform. Fans have queried the lack of video on previous releases so Neil found a solution. His Shakey Pictures team combed the internet for fan footage and they used that, sometimes with no-so accurate results. “What happens on the film, sometimes you see Joe Allen and you should be seeing Tim Drummond, because these are the only videos we have,” Neil explains. “We got them from the internet and we syched them up with the original tracks and its pretty cool to actually watch. But we have some problems because we have the wrong bass player on something like ‘Bound For Glory’. You are seeing Joe Allen who is great but you are not really hearing him playing. You are listening to Tim Drummond. Joe Allen looks great so you get a good-looking bass player with a great bass player playing or the other way around”.
For some songs there was no video to use. “Several of the songs have no video,” he says. “We use the cover when we do that. That’s when you look at the cover and get a feel for the record. We didn’t want to put anything else in there because there is nothing else and we don’t have it anyway”
The tracklisting for ‘A Treasure’ is:

The ZepFest features over 50 bands on five stages. There'll be speakers, authors, secret shows. It's also a completely Green festival. ZepFest CEO and Festival Director Mark Boudreau says the Fest will include, “Descendants, disciples and influences.” There'll be blues artists the Night Hawks and Willie Big Eyes Smith, contemporaries Vanilla Fudge, and fans Dread Zeppelin, tribute bands, and guest speakers most notably Atlantic Records' Jerry Greenberg.
The late Pinetop Perkins was scheduled to perform, and the entire ZepFest will be dedicated to him.
The Yardbirds' band members will be on hand throughout the day to connect with fans. Guitarist Ben King will be part of the Ultimate Dream Band in which a lucky fan gets a shot at playing before the Yardbirds. The band's tour manager, Henry “The Horse” Smith, an original Led Zeppelin roadie, will be on hand to tell stories. Jim McCarty will be giving a Q&A Session. Rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja, who became a professional photographer after the Yardbirds broke up in 1968, will be showing (and selling) photographs, including the iconic back lit shot of Jimmy Page, which will be signed by both Jimmy and Chris. A sampling of Chris' work can be seen on his web site, http://www.chrisdreja.com.
The Yardbirds is original members: rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja and drummer Jim McCarty, and a new generation of musicians: singer/acoustic guitarist/harpist Andy Mitchell (since 2009), bassist David Smale (since 2009), and lead guitarist Ben King (since 2005).
The Yardbirds innovated 1960s guitar, with fuzz tone, feedback, distortion, backwards echo, improved amplification….and using a bow to play guitar. The group paved the way for the careers of Eric Clapton (1963-'65) Jeff Beck ('65-'66), and Jimmy Page (66-'68, first as bassist, then guitarist when Beck left). The group drew some repertoire from the blues acts of the day, including Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, and Bo Diddley, and the Yardbirds hits were some of the best songs of the British Invasion: “For Your Love,” “Heart Full of Soul,” "Shapes of Things," “I'm A Man,” and “Over Under Sideways Down,” “Train Kept A- Rolling,” “Dazed and Confused.” “I'm A Man,” and “Over Under Sideways Down,” and “Better Man Than I.”
The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Soon after the induction, Jim and Chris reformed the Yardbirds, first playing at London's Marquee club with the newly reformed Animals.
In 2003, Steve Vai's Favored Nations label released their album BIRDLAND, an album of new songs that featured guest appearances from Vai, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Brian May, Steve Lukather, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and John Rzeznik. In 2005 guitarist Ben King joined the group, who recorded LIVE AT B.B. KING BLUES CLUB on July 19, 2006. That came out in 2007, included a version of “I'm a Man” that played on the Simpsons that year.
The Yardbirds has continued to tour. An institution in popular music, blues, rock and roll, the group made an indelible mark on the music and culture of both the 1960s and future generations.

ELVIN BISHOP TO RELEASE RAISIN’ HELL REVUE
ON DELTA GROOVE RECORDS ON MAY 17
Live disc features Grammy winner’s smash “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” along with blues standards, recorded live in the party atmosphere of the 2010 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.
Band features Finis Tasby, John Németh, Kid Anderson
and Terry Hanck
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Elvin Bishop’s musical biography is no secret to anyone who has followed blues or rock over the past 40 years. Taken under wing by legendary bluesman Little Smokey Smothers in the ’60s, Bishop found a wide audience as guitarist in the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and in the ’70s scored a Top-10 radio hit with “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Along the way, he’s carved out a niche all his own, playing an appealing mix of rootsy rock ’n’ roll, R&B and barroom boogie, steeped in the heavy blues he learned from Little Smokey all those years ago.
So when a bunch of close friends who also happen to be consummate musicians are sequestered together, as they were at sea on the 2010 Legendary Blues Cruise, what else were they to do but unite forces to create some truly exemplary music? Thankfully the tapes were rolling, and the musical experience was saved for posterity. Delta Groove Music will release the resultant Raisin’ Hell Revue live album on May 17, 2011. And with the good vibes of a ship full of fellow music lovers to buoy the band, you can really hear that everyone was having a great time.
Over the course of their featured performance, Bishop shares the vocal mike with four hard-hitting pros: blues veteran Finis Tasby (Lowell Fulson, Freddie King, Clarence Carter, Z.Z. Hill), fast-rising harmonica man John Németh (Anson Funderburgh, Junior Watson), Norwegian blues guitar star Chris (Kid) Anderson (Charlie Musselwhite’s band), and Bishop’s long-time band-mate and Bay Area legend, saxophonist Terry Hanck. They work their way through a strutting, soulful set of blues and R&B with the powerful grace of a veteran working outfit, perfectly highlighting the strengths of everyone involved. And it really is a “revue” in the classic sense of the term — various band members representing a wide array of styles move in and out of the spotlight, all presided over by the good-humored and congenial master of ceremonies Elvin Bishop. We’re treated to swinging up-tempo R&B, lowdown blues, rootsy rock ’n’ roll, and a touch of gospel; even a fantastic reworking of Bishop’s smash hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” is included featuring the wonderfully gifted and dynamic vocalist John Németh.
Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Elvin Bishop didn’t have much exposure to live music as a youngster. But his family had a radio, and in between the pop schmaltz and the C&W that ruled the airwaves in the 1950s, that radio could sometimes catch the legendary R&B programming beamed throughout the southern part of the U.S. at night by Nashville radio station WLAC. That station introduced Bishop to the classic records of Jimmy Reed, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and once his ears had been hooked, there was no turning back for young Elvin. He soon got his first guitar and on his own began scratching out the basic outlines of the blues, R&B and rock ’n’ roll that had captured his imagination.
By the time he was preparing to go to college in the late ’50s, Bishop had earned a National Merit Scholarship, allowing him to go to almost any school he chose — and there was only one choice on Elvin’s mind, the prestigious University of Chicago, which just happened to be located on Chicago’s South Side, ground zero for much of the urban blues Elvin had been studying only from a distance. He arrived in Chicago in 1959, and before long crossed paths with a kindred spirit in Paul Butterfield. Together, they explored the ghetto blues clubs in the black neighborhoods surrounding the university campus at a time when blues giants like Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Howlin’ Wolf could be found playing in neighborhood joints on a weeknight. Elvin soaked it all up, gaining impromptu lessons and invaluable stage time in front of discerning audiences, and forging a fluid yet powerful guitar style of his own.
By 1963, Bishop and Butterfield were ready to graduate — not necessarily from the university, but certainly from their apprenticeship under Chicago’s blues elders. Recruiting Howlin’ Wolf’s former rhythm section of Sam Lay on drums and Jerome Arnold on bass, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was born. In 1965, after adding Mike Bloomfield and Mark Naftalin to the lineup, their revolutionary debut LP was released, kicking open the door for virtually all the young white blues bands that followed.
Bishop remained in the fold for three albums with the Butterfield band, including their innovative East-Westrelease (on which Bishop and Bloomfield’s intertwining guitars helped set the stage for the Allman Brothers Band among many others who followed), before venturing out on his own. Elvin released four well-received albums on Epic Records in the early ’70s before joining Capricorn Records for a couple of LPs and experiencing his biggest pop success, the national hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” from his 1976 album Struttin’ My Stuff.
As popular musical trends evolved, the recording projects tapered off, but road work kept Elvin busy through the ’80s, and by the time he hooked up with Alligator Records in 1988, he was returning to his bluesy roots. And that fertile territory has been his focus ever since.
Delta Groove Productions president Randy Chortkoff has been a fan and follower of Elvin’s music through all the many phases of his career, beginning with Butterfield in the mid ’60s, so when the opportunity arose to bring Elvin into the Delta Groove fold, Chortkoff jumped at the opportunity. The result was Elvin’s Grammy-nominated 2008 CD The Blues Rolls On, a project supported by an all-star cast of blues royalty, among them B.B. King, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, George Thorogood, James Cotton, Kim Wilson, Tommy Castro, John Németh and Angela Strehli.
The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that “ . . .he’s as lively and sharp-witted as ever. No purist, he bends a variety of styles to his irrepressible personality.”
And now, with the new Delta Groove release Raisin’ Hell Revue, Bishop and crew invoke deep blues while at sail on the deep blue sea.

‘THE BRICK ALBUM’ FROM THE GREENCARDS FUSES GRAMMY NOMINEES’ ECLECTIC INFLUENCES WITH ONSTAGE ENERGY
Vince Gill and Sam Bush make guest appearances on Justin Niebank-produced album, due for release June 21, 2011.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — From the first notes struck together in 2003 through tours with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, up to and beyond their fourth studio album in 2009, The Greencards have won steadily escalating acclaim for their multi-dimensional Americana vision. Each step they’ve taken has widened their appeal. Their releases have topped the Billboard Bluegrass charts. In both 2008 (for their Viridian album) and 2010 (for Fascination), they were nominated for Grammy Awards in the “Best Country Instrumental” category. They’ve earned ovations from “newgrass” music devotees at MerleFest and from indie-rock loyalists at Lollapalooza and the Austin City Limits Festival. “This imported band is creating some of the finest Americana around.”
But this four-piece band, spearheaded by Australians Carol Young and Kym Warner, is interested less in past accomplishments than in looking ahead for new goals to achieve. Produced and engineered by studio veteran Justin Niebank (Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Keith Urban), The Brick Album on the band’s own Darling Street Records is the first to successfully infuse The Greencards’ eclectic musical references with the excitement they generate onstage.
“We’ve been striving for this since our first record,” says mandolinist Warner. “We recorded totally in one room this time, with very little isolation. It was all about doing the performance now, without going back to add anything later on.”
“What you’re hearing is all one take,” bassist and singer Young adds. “If someone really didn’t like what we’d done, we’d play it all again from the top rather than drop the part in. When you drop in a part, you lose a little bit of the feel. You’ve got to get a run-up to it.”
That immediacy was heightened by the addition of two new members of the group. Tyler Andal, a young fiddle whiz from Tennessee, reinforces both The Greencards’ grounding in roots music and their eagerness to let in the fresh air of newgrass, rock, folk elements, Latin America and much more. “He thinks outside the box,” Warner explains. “We’ve always had a strong rhythmic aspect to our music, and Tyler definitely brings that.”
The other recent arrival, former National Flatpicking Championship winner Carl Miner, excels as a guitarist in that tradition but more importantly applies his virtuosity equally well beyond it. “He’s good at everything,” Warner says. “He’s one of the most versatile musicians, and probably the most consistent, we’ve ever played with. With Tyler and him in the band, everyone is pulling in the same direction.”
Make that “directions.” The Brick Album kicks off with “Make It Out West,” a rhythmically irresistible chant powered by guest artist Sam Bush’s slide mandolin, with lyrics conjuring restless dreams and far horizons. From there the songs take listeners through ever-changing vistas — the Spanish-inflected “Heart Fixer,” whose vocals by Young and guest artist Vince Gill stir memories of Marty Robbins; the slinky, teasing “Mrs. Madness,” written by Warner after a night of watching Bored to Death; the magical “Girl in the Telescope,” which floats like a feather in sunlight; “Tale of KangaRio,” an intimate Brazilian dance of mandolin and guitar; “Loving You Is the Only Way To Fly,” a dreamy evocation of the Louvin and Everly Brothers, the pillars of classic country duet vocals.
There’s much more, but two tracks bear special mention. The wistful “Faded” is a sweetly harmonized tune, so natural that you don’t even notice its unusual 5/4 time signature. Similarly, “Adelaide” is a brisk instrumental, built over a rushing stream of chord changes made accessible by melodies and solos of eloquent coherence.
“As we get older, the more I think about it, the more we want something in music you can cling to,” Warner says. “That comes with melody. What we do on The Brick Album allows us to have something not only on the record but also on our live show. It brings it back to “more than anything, this is about lyrics and harmony.”
It’s also about integrating fans more than ever into the band’s process. The Greencards followed an independent path with The Brick Album, partnering with its followers rather than with record labels to fund its sessions. In exchange for contributing to the “Buy A Brick” project, each donor had his or her name permanently inscribed on a brick within the wall that comprises its cover art.
“The times have changed a lot in the music industry, not so much in the creative side but in business side of making music,” Warner says. “We just wanted to give something unique and special to people, not just by sending them an early copy of the record by putting their names on the artwork. That makes them fully a part of it.”
But it’s the music that makes us all part of this journey. Warner and Young were both steeped in country music; she charted several No. 1 singles in her homeland as a solo artist and he won the Australian National Bluegrass Mandolin Championship for four consecutive years. They moved to Austin, put together the first incarnation of The Greencards there and today call Nashville home.
Along the way, they have picked up some influential fans. Their 2009 release, Fascination, prompted Rosanne Cash to say, “The Greencards are a little island of truth and beauty in a sea of artifice and mediocrity. What a fine group, and what a great collection of songs.” Buddy Miller called it one of the year’s “most inventive discs.”
With this new release, the world becomes more than ever The Greencards’ stage. Their sound defies category, balancing taste and technique, engaging lyrics and melodies and wildly creative arrangements. There may be a wall on The Brick Album’s cover, but the future suggested on these tracks knows no barrier.

Nektar's Classic Album 'Remember The Future' Gets Re-Released With Bonus Live Disc
4/25/2011 – Philadelphia, PA – Considered one of the greatest 'prog' albums ever to be recorded, Nektar's 'Remember The Future' (#5 in Billboard in 1973) has been re-released by Philadelphia'sItsAboutMusic.com. Fans of the progressive rock genre are rejoicing with the new reissue of Nektar's classic album, along with the added bonus CD of an unreleased live concert from 2007 and a full live performance of 'Remember The Future'.
The main driving force behind Nektar Roye Albrighton discusses the concept behind 'Remember The Future': “We imagined the scenario where an alien landed here but was unable to communicate in the normal sense by voice, and was so alien looking (aka blue skin) that he was frustrated until, that is, he met a blind boy. With his mental powers the alien could communicate with him easily enough and proceeded to describe to him that he had visited earth once before. He also described what had happened to the human race all that time ago and tried to impress on the boy that humans should not make the same mistakes again.”
Unquestionably, 'Remember The Future' propelled Nektar to the next level of international success, particularly in the US. “The album took us all by surprise that is was so well received,” says Roye. “We had no idea that it would become such a milestone in the progressive rock arena. Personally I like the album, it's also a pleasure to play live (especially part two). I wouldn't say it is my favorite Nektar album, but it ranks high. My all time favorite 'Recycled', which was a joy to record, is still very listenable and a real blast to play 'live' as it brings out the true power of the band.”
The Nektar story is a remarkable one. A British rock band that found stardom and major success in Germany and the USA, yet failed to make the significant breakthrough in their own country. With three gold albums under their belt ('Remember The Future', 'Down To Earth' and 'Recycled'), Nektar produced some of the most original work of the seventies and eighties. In virtuoso guitarist Roye Albrighton Nektar had a charismatic front man who had shared a stage with Jimi Hendrix, in Allan "Taff" Freeman a unique keyboard player, in Derek "Mo" Moore a bass playing powerhouse and in Ron Howden a fluidity rarely found in a drummer. Fifth member Mick Brockett was not a musician, but was responsible for one of the most stunning light and visual shows ever to grace the rock stage. Nektar's history appeared to have been written when they finally split in the eighties. Despite attempts to re-kindle the flame, the Nektar light, it seemed was out...until that is, the year 2000. The new millenium saw the long awaited reunion tour of the classic line-up, to rave reviews and fantastic receptions. The light we thought was out, had in fact been kept aglow - by loyal fans across the globe! "It's pretty timeless music," says Roye Albrighton, "and what I'm hearing from most of the new, younger fans that are now coming to our shows, is that it's like going back in time. They are starting to really discover music again, which, of course, is a great relief to us and some of the older bands from our time."
An American tour in September 2004 saw Taff Freeman depart the band for personal reasons and his successor, Hammond virtuoso Tom Hughes, instantly earning a place in the hearts of the Nektar faithful. In 2007 Nektar truly took over their own management, procured their official website as their own, entirely under their control and went on a 22-date tour of Germany. Joining Roye and Ron was Peter Pichl on 5-string bass and Klaus Henatsch on keyboards, these two new members from the rock 'n roll city of Hanover, Germany, seemed to gel from the outset and along with the release of the critically acclaimed CD 'Book of Days' in 2008 and the live DBL CD 'Fortyfied', Nektar has set its mark once again. With continued concert dates, along with the remastering of the remainder of the Nektar back catalogue on CD by ItsAboutMusic.com, this legendary band has become once more a proud force to be reckoned with in the world of progressive music. Now fans of the band can enjoy their timeless classic 'Remember The Future' with pristine sound, and for the first time hear an unreleased concert of Nektar in 2007.
Nektar – 'Remember The Future'' / 'Live 2007' DBL CD Deluxe Edition and downloads are now available.

ARETHA: A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE” Arrives Exclusively at Walmart Stores and Walmart.com on Tuesday, May 3
Album Available Now for Pre-order on Walmart.com
DETROIT, MI (April 25, 2011) – Aretha’s Records announced today that “ARETHA: A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE,” the much-anticipated new album from the undisputed “queen of soul,” will be available exclusively at Walmart stores and Walmart.com beginning on May 3. Fans can pre-order “A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE” now on Walmart.com. The digital version of the album will be offered on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers on June 3.
“A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE,” features eleven tracks – including the debut single “How Long I’ve Waited” plus one bonus track. It's Franklin’s 38th studio album in an amazing career that has seen her win no fewer than 18 Grammy® Awards. Quite recently, Rolling Stone published its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in which Aretha Franklin placed first.
The album, is the very first on the legendary artist’s own label, Aretha’s Records and is reflective of the great diversity of material and styles at which Aretha excels, offering smoldering ballads, sizzling blues-infused tracks as well as an acknowledgment of gospel roots in the duet “Faithful” with Karen Clark-Sheard. “A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE” is the Queen of Soul back at the top of her game and features, for the first time ever as a physical release, her historic 2009 Presidential Inaugural performance of “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee.” The late Jerry Wexler, the legendary producer, who worked with Aretha Franklin in the 1960's once noted, “If you look over the arc of her career, there is no American musical artist who has achieved her level of accomplishment. It has been one triumph after another.” The new album reinforces Wexler's statement in a very tangible way.
As the album's executive producer, Franklin's vision for the project was fulfilled in no uncertain terms. She's tapped into many genres of music that she has addressed during her vast and legendary career -- pop, blues, jazz and, of course, soul. The album is, clearly, a work that is contemporary and classic which is evidenced by her collaborations with both modern day hit makers and established masters.
Concurrent with the announcement of the forthcoming release of “A WOMAN FALLING OUT OF LOVE,” Aretha offered this Queenly advice to all mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends:
“OK ladies take a good look at the photo of me on this album; this is how you’re supposed to look when you’re a woman falling out of love. Don’t sit by the phone waiting for him to call you, girlfriend; I want you to listen very closely to the lyrics of the songs on this album and you’ll hear a few good tips. Go out and have a ball!” - Love always, Ree Ree

Ein Abend mit Liedern von Nico in Duplex Cabaret 4. Juni, 11. Juni, 18. Juni, 25. Juni:
TAMMY FAYE STARLITE IS NICO IN CHELSEA MÄDCHEN AT THE DUPLEX EVERY SATURDAY IN JUNE
foto: Bob Gruen
Following her much lauded performances of Chelsea Mädchen at Joe's Pub and at the HOWL! Festival last year, Tammy Faye Starlite brings her bravura theater piece focused on the music and commentary of Nico, the glamorously decadent Velvet Underground chanteuse, née Christa Paffgen, to the historic Duplex Cabaret Theatre (61 Christopher St. @ 7th Avenue) every Saturday night in June. The Duplex performances of Chelsea Mädchen start at 9:30 PM on June 4, 11, 18 and 25 and afford the production an intimate cabaret atmosphere most appropriate to the content; tickets are $15 and with a two drink minimum.
Inspired by current economic catastrophes of the same sort that provoked the climate of fear that begat the Third Reich, Tammy Faye Starlite forswears her country persona for an evening of song performances -- und gespräch -- in a dark, Weimar-cum Warhol Kabaret Konzert directed by Michael Schiralli. Chelsea Mädchen includes the brilliant repertoire of songs associated with Nico’s brief, yet legendary, tenure with the Velvet Underground including “I’ll Be Your Mirror,” Femme Fatale” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties.” Starlite will also perform classic Nico covers of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine," Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Mine" and The Doors' "The End." The show will culminate with a rousing finale of "Deutschland Über Alles." Ticket information and reservations: (212) 255-5438 or http://bit.ly/g1Skd6
Starlite, backed by a six piece band recreates actual encounters Nico had with journalists based on the text by T.D. Lang. The piece includes dreamlike reminiscences about Lou Reed (and Jews in general), Andy Warhol, John Cale, Jackson Browne, David Bowie, Alain Delon and others. Starlite noted, “Nico was, and remains, a heroin(e) and emblem for these dark days of civil unrest and our unceasing fascination with sybaritic self-destruction and the willful deconstruction and annihilation of beauty.” She continued, “I’ve got the songs, the accent and the hair down and am working tirelessly on the cheekbones.”
Frank DiGiacomo, writing in the NY Daily News, noted,
"The lucky few who got to see performance artist Tammy Fay Starlite's one-woman homage to Velvet Underground singer Nico - 'Chelsea Mädchen' - are cheering her attempts to take the show Off-Broadway. Starlite's fans include living rock legend Danny Fields who was close to the Teutonic terror and got her signed to Elektra Records. Fields says he initially didn't think a tribute to Nico 'should ever be done,' because the German singer was sui generis, but, he adds, Starlite 'embraces the knowledge and sensibility' of his late friend. 'It's not an imitation, it's a rediscovery of Nico.'" Fields told The Examiner's Jim Bessman. "I love what she does. She's wonderful." Starlite called his approval "a papal blessing.'" "It was like receiving holy manna from Danny Fields who knew Nico so well," says Starlite. "He invited me over to listen to a tape of a phone conversation with her in 1971, and you could hear the pleading in her voice even at that point. She wasn’t destitute yet, but seemed to have an enormous gaping need that I think was filled by drugs."
For her role as Nico in Chelsea Mädchen singer/performance artist/bandleader Starlite temporarily abandons her preternaturally godly country star character whose set list has included “Miguided Magdalene,” “God Has Lodged a Tenant in My Uterus,” "Ride The Cotton Pony" and the classic “Did I Shave My Vagina For This?”
Praise for Tammy Faye Starlite
"Tammy is funnier every time I see her...She has kind of stumbled into greater relevance with what's happening in the world right now...Very powerful people have learned how to manipulate folks through faith and fear. Being absolutely irreverent is an important way to fight back. She's like Lenny Bruce and his insistence on the N-word." Steve Earle
"Tammy Faye Starlite incisively satirizes the right-wing politics...but above all the gal can sing; she’s all over that signature country twang and style, and she works the audience like an evangelist at a roadhouse revival." Lovell Estell III, L.A. Weekly
"She's my Karen Finley." Robert Christgau, The Village Voice
"When it comes to complete and utterly wonderful depravity, few have ever dropped their drawers, exposed every orifice and let out a lustful holler with as much panache as Miss Tammy Faye Starlite, whose self-released EP, On My Knees, sets a new standard for countrified carnality." Robert Baird, Magnet
"Miss Tammy Faye Starlite...Sort of a Pia Zadoable look-alike who pulls off an alter ego possessed by Tammy Wynette, Jesus Christ and Wild Turkey...turned Cheap Trick's Surrender into a Bible-thumping rapturous hymn....and brought new meaning to Bible passages, such as when he comes, he will come. Tammy Faye's brilliant Did I Shave My Vagina For This? brought the house down, especially when she wiped away a tear while singing, it's Saturday night, and I'm watching the tube, while he goes off to shave another girls pubes. All in the key of D - for divine ! Jesus would have loved it, before he sent her straight to hell. " Libby Molyneaux, L.A. Weekly
"A bunch of cowboys wander into a honky-tonk, listen for a while to the band onstage, decide they like what they hear-as evinced by hollered requests for that song about the vagina. Hey, it could happen, and it pretty much did at the Opryland Hotel, when the singer known as Tammy Faye Starlite warbled the jaw-dropping God Has Lodged a Tenant in My Uterus." Jim Ridley, Nashville Scene
"A country music send-up whose shows can grow disarmingly pointed, Tammy Faye Starlite is a genius of sorts. She has a couple recordings to her name including Used Country Female and On My Knees, an EP boasting the would-be hit "Did I Shave My Vagina For This?" The Onion

GUITAR MASTERS HARRY MANX AND KEVIN BREIT TEAM UP AGAIN FOR NEW CD, STRICTLY WHATEVER, COMING MAY 24 ON
STONY PLAIN RECORDS
EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces a May 24 release date for the new collaboration from guitar masters Harry Manx and Kevin Breit, Strictly Whatever, with U.S. distribution by ADA. The pair’s third album together, Strictly Whatever is the Manx/Breit team’s second CD for Stony Plain and follows the critically-acclaimed In Good We Trust, released in April of 2007.
A new Harry Manx and Kevin Breit CD is always full of eclectic musical delights, and for Strictly Whatever each of the two guitarists brought a number of different original songs to the table, plus unique covers of Bobby Hebb’s classic, “Sunny;” and the John Lee Hooker chestnut, “Mr. Lucky.”
“What’s different for me on this CD is that I played mostly baritone guitar, which adds a good bass-end to the tunes,” says Harry Manx. “I also sat down and played kick drum and snare with my left and right feet while playing the guitar. Kevin brought a wide variety of stringed instruments and electronic pedals.”
“Between us, Harry and I sing on most all of the songs,” explains Kevin Breit. “He and I sing lead on three or four songs each, and there are three vocal duets. Harry plays Mohan Veena, the Indian instrument he brings to all his recordings and live gigs, as well as banjo, baritone electric guitar and lap acoustic guitar; and I played just about everything else.”
Kevin Breit contributes six new songs on Strictly Whatever, while Manx penned three. One of Breit’s new tunes is an all-instrumental track, “Hippy Trippy,” which conjures up visions of the psychedelic ‘60s. “Though we each prepared our songs in advance of the session, we tried to do a lot of the creating in the studio on the spot,” Manx says, adding to the spontaneous vibe of the recordings. “It’s interesting to note that I often play lead lines on guitar on Kevin’s tracks and he plays the leads on mine. That, along with many other details of our recording sessions were never discussed in advance…we just allow each other to do their best…only one rule, Strictly Whatever rules,!” enthuses Manx.

*** PUNMASTER'S TRIVIA CORNER ***
The trivia question from the last MusicWire was:
A principal member of this band went on to a solo career.......the band's hit song is believed to have been an instrumental influence on Steely Dan as well as shaping the vocal styling of Boz Scaggs.
Name the band to win.....and for extra points, name the artist who went on to a solo carer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: The band was ACE featuring Paul Carrack.
"How Long"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
the champions are... (in order of appearance)
Vernon McNemar
Pete Cartwright
Brian Martin
Don Mennie
Rog (in Scotland)
Bob Putignano
Bill Stewart
Terry Hansen
Bernie Horowitz
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ace and Paul Carrack?
Vernon McNemar
------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS My answer to this weeks trivia question...The band was Ace, the song was "How Long" and the band member who went on to a solo career was Paul Carrack.
Later, gator....Pete Cartwright
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How about Ace, featuring Paul Carrack? "Deacon Blues" does sound suspiciously like "How Long." Not sure of the Boz connection, though. Maybe for his "Silk Degrees" era.
Brian Martin
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The hit song "How Long" by ACE is believed to have been an instrumental influence on Steely Dan as well as shaping the vocal styling of Boz Scaggs. ACE vocalist Paul Carrack would later have a solo career with his own records, and do work with Squeeze and Roxy Music.
Don Mennie
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The answer you are looking for is Ace with their hit song being "How long".
Paul Carrack their singer / keyboard player had a successful career after
he left the band though he has also been involved in several other bands.
I saw Ace before their hit so it must have been around 1973 in, I think,
the Fisher Hall, Cambridge. Frankly I don't see the influence on Steely
Dan or Boz Scaggs although I have heard this opinion expressed several times.
Rog (in Scotland)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi David: I believe that the band was the UK band Ace, and the solo artist name is Paul Carrack.
Bob Putignano
www.SoundsofBlue.com
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: The band is Ace and the singer was Paul Carrack
Thank you,
Bill Stewart
------------------------------------------------------------------------
David, How about Ace, with their one-hit-wonder song "How Long". Sung by Paul Carrack, who went on to a solo career as well as playing in Nick Lowe's Cowboy Outfit (Rose Of England, etc).
P.s. And joined Squeeze, singing on their biggest hit, "Tempted".
- Terry Hansen
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave,
Going to say the band was Ace...the song...How Long...and the artist...Paul Carrack.
