NASHVILLE (Billboard) - When Asleep at the Wheel frontman Ray Benson started a band in Paw Paw, West Virginia, in 1970, he had no idea that 40 years later he would still be at the helm of one of America's most adventurous musical outfits.

More Unreleased Jimi Hendrix To Come
The new Jimi Hendrix album `Valleys of Neptune` will not be the last unreleased music we hear from the legendary guitarist who died 40-years ago this year.
“We probably have about 14 more project to go over the next 10 years,” his sister Janie Hendrix tells Undercover News. “It will be a combination of concert footage, studio, live CDs and DVDs.
Janie now runs the family business Experience Hendrix LLC and manages the Jimi Hendrix catalogue. She says he was forever performing and recording “He performed a lot,” she says. “He was paid well his performances and a lot of it was filmed or recorded. We also mix concert footage with documentary footage and we have a lot of that in the can as well”.
The tracks from new album ‘Valleys of Neptune have a common thread. ’The common thread outside of Mr Bad Luck was about the time period,” she says. “In 1969, Jimi had finished ‘Electric Ladyland’ and he was working on this new sound. He was telling us about this new music, this new sound that he wanted people to hear. He thought he could really change music. It was similar to what we did in 1997 when we put out ‘First Rays of the New Rising Sun’. Once again, that was the same time period that ‘Valleys of Neptune’ was from”.
Jimi Hendrix was only around for four years but left an enormous catalogue. “The vault is full of songs in different versions,” she says. “He was such a perfectionist and he would hear things a different way. He never really played the same song the same way twice. That's what we have. Over 110 songs he wrote and accomplished a lot in four years”.
‘Valleys of Neptune’ will be released through Sony Music.
Sony Music is offering you a chance to win a not-for-sale limited edition collectors item Jimi Hendrix iPod Touch for those who preorder the album here.
The prize includes the collectors edition Valleys of Neptune iPod Touch, a Jimi Hendrix canvas print and a CD pack featuring the newly remastered Jimi Hendrix CD collection.
Sony Music released Jimi Hendrix ‘Valleys of Neptune’ on March 12.

Elton John And Leon Russell Album Goes Vocal
The basic tracks for the upcoming album for Elton John and Leon Russell have been laid down in Los Angeles and the dynamic duo has now started putting down the vocals.
The album, featuring songs written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin is going to be very different.
Bernie’s website reports that, “the trio has cut fifteen songs ranging from Stones like rockers, Country tinged ballads, Gospel and even a Sinatra like weepy similar to something torn from the grooves of “In the Wee Small Hours” As reported before it’s varied in scope and drenched in a rich tapestry of atmospherics. Don’t expect to hear the old EJ/BT sound; this is organic recording unlike anything you’ve heard from our duo before”.
The musicians on the album are T-Bone Burnett stalwarts as drummers Jim Keltner and Jay Bellerose, Bassist Dennis Crouch, guitar virtuoso Marc Ribot and additional keyboardist and tech wizard Keefus Ciancia.
Russell underwent brain surgery in January this year. Bernietaupin.com reports “Leon continues to improve from the surgery that sidelined him in the initial stages and caused the media to over diagnose his condition. His playing is masterful as ever and his contribution to the project grows more exciting with the passing of everyday”.

T-Bone Wolk Dies From Heart Attack
Bass player Tom T-Bone Wolk, best known for his work with Hall and Oates, died last Saturday from a heart attack at age 58.
T-Bone Wolk was a regular in the Saturday Night Live band and has worked with Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Laurie Anderson, Robert Palmer, Elvis Costello and Shawn Colvin over the years.
Australians familiar with jimmy Barnes ‘Freight Train heart’ album still hear his work on radio.
As a producer, Wolk produced the 1991 Willie Nile album ‘Places I Have Never Been’.
More recently, Wolk was seen online as the bass player in Daryl Hall’s ‘Live From Daryl’s House’ show.
In the biography at his official website Marc Wayner describes the guy this way:
“For those of you don't know, T-Bone Wolk is that guy with "the hat" who, among other activities, has been playing bass guitar with Daryl Hall and John Oates since 1981.
“He originally got the gig after playing bass on the first gold rap record, "These Are The Breaks", by Kurtis Blow in early 1981.
“This gave him the chance to audition for the Hall and Oates band; now 23 years later he is the resident musical director and often times co-producer of their records”Jeff Beck Talks About The Band

Jeff Beck Says He Is Not Nigel Tufnel
It has been widely written over the years that the Nigel Tufnel character in the rock and roll spoof Spinal Tap was based on Jeff Beck. Jeff says it is not him.
“I think the hair was but it ends there,” he tells Undercover. “I knew that Christopher Guest had been watching me but Nigel is based on different characters from Glam Rock. Ironically, I was the only one who wasn’t Glam Rock. I loved every minute of that movie”.
He first saw the 1984 movie when he was playing at the cinemas years ago. “I heard it on recommendation,” he says. “I was watching it at a cinema in Westwood and I was laughing so loud people were telling me to shut-up. It was the funniest thing. They couldn’t see the funny side of it”.
Jeff Beck is heading to Australia later this month for Bluesfest. He will also perform other shows across Australia.

Yoko Ono Exploits John Lennon For French Car Commercial
Yoko Ono and her son Sean Lennon are in serious damage control after exploiting old interview footage of John Lennon for a television commercial.
Yoko has taken her late husband John completely out of context for financial gain for a commercial for French car manufacturer Citroen.
John must be rolling around in his grave knowing that words of encouragement he was saying for fans in the 70s are being used to flog the French automobile.
Sean Lennon has jumped to the defence of his mother’s actions trying to explain that “Having just seen [the] ad I realize why people are mad. But [the] intention was not financial."
He said on Twitter that Yoko did it, "hoping to keep dad in [the] public consciousness."
Mrs Lennon and son obviously have no idea of John’s profile still nearly 30 years after his death. “It's just hard to find new ways to keep dad in the new world. Not many things [are] as effective as TV," Sean said on Twitter.

Jeff Beck Talks About The Band
Jeff Beck has gathered some of the world`s best musicians for his touring band for the upcoming Australian visit.
Narada Michael Walden,, who first played with Beck back in 1976 on the ‘Wired’ album is on drums. Rhonda Smith who has worked with Justin Timberlake and Beyonce is on bass and Jason Rebello, who has played with Sting and Chaka Khan is on bass.
Beck talked to Undercover about his A-Team.
“Michael Narada Walden has proven himself as a producer but what surprised me was that he played with so much energy and so much spot on timing,” he tells undercover.com.au. “He must have been playing every single day since I knew him back in 1975 / 1976. More precisely, through being a record producer his timing is so much better than it was. His general approach to this band is nothing more than highly desirable. He is almost the leader. He drives everybody hard. He is the first one to do anything. He is a very sensitive player”.
Walden and Beck go back 35-years. “When I called him he asked why it took me 35-years to ask,” Beck said.
Jeff recalled their early days saying, “He had a band in South San Francisco and I saw him advertised in small gigs when I was driving up. I thought things mustn’t have been going well for him. The next thing you know he was producing Aretha Franklin”.
“Rhonda Smith came out of the blue. Narada recommended her. I spoke to her on the phone and she just sounded right from the beginning. I flew out and within a week we had a full-blown rehearsal that went really good.
“Jason Rebello, he his great. His knowledge of chords is fantastic. He does get a little jazzy sometimes and I have to say something. He has started to read me more clearly now after this album and we have had our difference of opinion on certain things. That’s how things get sorted out”.

David Bowie's new makeover: Rock 'n' roll recluse
By Dean Goodman
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – David Bowie is spending his Golden Years in anonymity.
The 63-year-old rock icon last released a new album in 2003, and stopped touring in 2004 after suffering a heart attack during a European trek. The early Internet enthusiast has not even updated his official blog since October 2006, when he proudly revealed he would voice a character on the kids cartoon show "SpongeBob SquarePants."
Last year, he attended a few red-carpet events to help promote his son Duncan Jones' movie "Moon." But otherwise the musical chameleon seems to be savoring his latest metamorphosis into married father of a 9-year-old daughter in New York.
"He's just being Dad, I think, laying low," said bass player Gail Ann Dorsey, who started working with Bowie almost 15 years ago. "I can't imagine he's not writing or doing something, but we'll just have to wait and see."
Dorsey said she e-mailed him a birthday greeting in January, but resisted the temptation to ask if he was working on any projects.
"I never pry into an artist's life, or process either," Dorsey said. "I don't write to him and go, 'What are you doing?' Or call and go, 'Why aren't you playing?' You let people be and you see where it falls."
Bowie biographer Marc Spitz is slowly losing hope that the singer will make a comeback, even as peers such as Lou Reed and Iggy Pop keep recording and touring.
"CLOSE TO THE ABYSS"
His absence is all the more striking given that Bowie had released an album or single almost every year since 1964. It would be akin to the equally prolific Woody Allen stepping back from filmmaking, Spitz said.
He also noted that people are used to celebrities such as David Letterman and Robin Williams bouncing back after heart ailments, not to mention former Vice President Dick Cheney.
But given that Bowie often performed songs about death and the mysteries of life, Spitz said he might have lost his appetite after getting "that close to the abyss."
He also interviewed people for his book, "Bowie: A Biography," who told him: "Maybe he's just done, maybe he's said his piece," Spitz recounted. "Some people don't go forever and ever and ever, like the Rolling Stones."
Bowie's managers declined to comment on his current pursuits. The singer has long dabbled in film, painting and photography. Bowie and his second wife, Somali model Iman, are the parents of 9-year-old Lexi.
His 38-year-old son Duncan, formerly known as Zowie Bowie, kept the family in the news this past year with his sci-fi movie "Moon," which recently won a British Academy Film Award.
While it's entirely possible that Bowie is occupied with parent-teacher meetings and playing the house-husband role that John Lennon assumed for the last five years of his life, he has kept his representatives busy with archival projects.
EMI last year released a CD and DVD derived from his 1999 appearance on VH1's "Storytellers," as well as a bonus-packed 40th anniversary reissue of his "Space Oddity" album.
Universal is about to reissue his self-titled 1967 debut album, also with bonus tracks, and Columbia has just issued a live CD from a 2003 tour.
The latter release, "A Reality Tour," is a double-disc set culled from a pair of shows in Dublin. A DVD version was released in 2004.
Still, Spitz is more interested in what Bowie has to say now. His last studio album, "Reality," came out in July 2003, spending just four weeks on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.
"His real value was how he synthesized the times and ran it through his psyche and then offered it back to us," he said. "I'm not as interested in what he had to say in 1976 as what he thinks of the state of the now, because he is so sharp and his insight is so valuable."

PHIL SPECTOR APPEALS MURDER CONVICTION
Phil Spector has appealed his 2009 murder conviction. Lawyers for the 70-year-old producer claim he didn’t get a fair trial when he was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison for shooting actress Lana Clarkson. According to Billboard, Spector’s attorneys cite judicial error and prosecutorial misconduct as reasons to overturn the conviction and give Phil a new trial. The state’s attorney general’s office will likely file a reply brief next month.
SLASH DIDN’T PLAY “BLACK OR WHITE” HOOK
Many people think Slash played the hook to Michael Jackson’s tune “Black or White,” but not only did the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist not perform it, he didn’t even like it. Spinner.com reports that during his interview keynote at Canadian Music Week, Slash stated, “I never played on [‘Black or White’]. If you listen to [the hook], that’s gay. I’d never play that.” The rocker went on to explain he did perform on the song “Give In To Me,” also off the Dangerous album, and he played in the “Black or White” video when Macaulay Culkin is rocking out. As for MJ, Slash called the late singer, “f**king amazing.” Read more at Spinner.com.
• Slash may not have played the hook on “Black or White” on the Dangerous album, but at Jackson’s 30th birthday celebration, he performed the whole song with MJ. Check it out on YouTube.

The rocker told the Birmingham Post that singer Ronnie James Dio, who is being treated for stomach cancer, is “doing better.” Iommi revealed that Ronnie has been “very positive” and is spending time in the studio singing. As for drummer Vinny Appice, who recently underwent shoulder surgery, Tony explained “he’s doing alright, he’s doing all his exercises” but Iommi isn’t sure if Vinny is playing again yet. In the meantime, the guys are mixing a live DVD and have some tour dates later this year. Read more at BirminghamPost.net.
PHIL LESH KNOWS ART ISN’T A SUBSTITUTE FOR LIFE
Phil Lesh turns 70 years old today. The Grateful Dead bassist has been making music for decades but while music might be his life’s work, as he told us, he knows to draw the line somewhere.
(Cut #2) “Art can be life in a certain sense but of course, it can’t be a substitute for life either.”
Phil celebrated his birthday with a benefit concert in San Francisco on Friday. You can see Lesh on the road later this year when he tours with Furthur, the group he’s in with Dead bandmate Bob Weir. They’re next show is June 25th in Rochester, New York and you can get all their dates at Furthur.net.

PINK FLOYD WIN LAWSUIT, DIGITAL SONG SALES HALTED
Pink Floyd have won their lawsuit against EMI and in doing so, have halted the digital sales of their individual tracks. The group was upset because in a 1999 contract, they mandated that songs could not be offered outside of their original album and while EMI said the contract didn’t cover digital releases, a judge agreed with Pink Floyd. According to the BBC, he then ordered EMI to pay 60-thousand dollars for the band’s legal fees and the court will now determine how much the label should pay in damages and how much the band should receive in royalties.
• The lawsuit could result in the band getting millions of dollars. Only The Beatles’ back catalog is more profitable than Pink Floyd’s.

Whereas some other newer artists may be having a little trouble in the ticket area. we’ve got three generations of fans. It’s them, that are our age, their children and their children’s children, at least. So we’ve been handed down and that’s why the audience is so large, I think.”

WHY THE STOOGES FINALLY GET IN THE ROCK HALL
On Monday, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will honor the 2010 inductees at a ceremony in New York City. Among this year’s batch of honorees are Genesis, ABBA, The Hollies, and Iggy and the Stooges. In fact, it took eight nominations before Iggy and the Stooges were chosen as inductees, and guitarist James Williamson told us how it feels.
(Cut #1) “Fantastic. I mean, all of us are very, very gratified to be recognized like that, after all these years. You know, eight years of being nominated and rejected was kind of disparaging and I think there was no one in the band who actually thought that we would get in this year. We were ready to take pride in setting a record for not getting it. But, in fact, we’re all deeply appreciative of it. We all feel very, very lucky to have had that happen to us.”
Williamson went on to say why he thinks Iggy and the Stooges finally made the cut.
(Cut #2) “If you want to know my own personal feeling, I think we have to thank ABBA because I’m sure, that there was some committee at the Hall of Fame that said, ‘Okay, we’re going to induct ABBA but we’re going to take so much crap for this, we gotta put in somebody like The Stooges to counterbalance that.”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place on Monday in New York City. For more info, head to RockHall.com.
ANVIL WIN AN AWARD
Anvil! The Story of Anvil, the acclaimed documentary about the Canadian rock band, was honored as Best Documentary at the Independent Spirit Awards over the weekend. FLEETWOOD MAC’S FUTURE
After a pretty busy period, Fleetwood Mac have been quiet lately, but we caught up with drummer Mick Fleetwood who filled us in on the band’s future plans.
(Cut #3) “We’ve been working like dogs for about a year and a half nearly. So that ended just before Christmas in Australia and we had a fantastic tour, went all over the world, and a happy one, a happy tour. So I would say knowing us bunch, we’ll probably take about 18 months off. And then there is definitely the want to do more work and hopefully we’ll do more recording. I don’t know whether that’s really gonna happen or not.”
In the meantime, Mick is working with his Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, setting up an American tour. Keep up to date on all things Mick at MickFleetwood.com.

BLACK COUNTRY MUST CHANGE THEIR NAME

Talk about a collector’s item, pal – if anybody got a hold of that.”
HOW BENATAR’S SONGS STAND THE TEST OF TIME
In June, Pat Benatar will hit the road with REO Speedwagon. Pat, who hasn’t released an album since 2003, has plenty of songs to choose from in her catalog. One thing that is impressive about those tunes is that they’ve all stood the test of time. We asked Pat why she thinks that is.
(Cut #3) “I don’t know. I mean, some of them are very stylized and are so particular to the era, and those are the ones that we sometimes leave out because I can’t even find any way to justify doing them. And I’m sure that happens to everybody but I have to say that most of them are okay, they hold up because the content of them is the same. What they’re about doesn’t change. You know, it’s the same story for everybody, all the time.”
Pat’s tour with REO Speedwagon kicks off on June 24th in Connecticut. For all the dates, head to Benatar.com.

CARLY SIMON SAYS SONG IS NOT ABOUT GEFFEN
Carly Simon is refuting the reports that her classic hit, “You’re So Vain,” is about former label head David Geffen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Carly called it a “funny mistake” saying the tune has “nothing to do with David Geffen.” Simon didn’t even know Geffen when she penned the song in 1971. The rumors came after Carly revealed she hid the name of who the song is about in the new version of the track, which appears on her latest CD Never Been Gone. England’s The Sun found the hidden message on the tune and it sounds like Carly is saying “David,” so they deduced it was about Geffen. The mystery will go on but you can read more at TheSun.co.uk.

Roky at the Beachland Ballroom March 6th
Mark Leddy, co owner of the Beachland Ballroom had told me a few months ago his short list of who he would love to have perform at the Beachland. Top of that short list was Roky Erickson. Who would have thought that a few short months later his dream would come true?
Roky packed the Beachland Ballroom's 10 anniversary show on the east side of Cleveland Saturday, March 6th with young and old alike; all there to hear that iconic voice of the 60's and we weren't let down!
I was hoping to meet Roky or get backstage for a photo but that didn't happen. He arrived right before he was to hit the stage and was gone after the last note of "You're Gonna Miss Me". He never made eye contact with any of the crowd. I was fortunate enough to make my way right up to the front (I love the Beachland and if any of you ever get to Cleveland I highly recommend this venue). Getting up that close and being able to see his face you could see sort of haunted and far away look on his face. I had seen Roky do one song at SXSW a few years ago and he also did one song at the Janis Joplin tribute show in downtown Cleveland last November but I wondered, as I am sure many others did too, how he would hold up for a whole set of songs...
But, aside from his being standoffish: he gave us a great show. Looking over the songs he did, we realized that he only did one 13th Floor Elevators song and that of course was the closer " You're Gonna Miss Me". Here is the list of other songs he performed with a great back up band: It's A Cold Night for Alligators, Creature with the Atom Brain, Stand for the Fire Demon, Bloody Hammer, Clear Night for Love, Burn the Flames, Starry Eyes, Don't Shake Me Lucifer, Red Temple Prayer (2 Headed Dog), and White Faces.
I feel lucky to have seen another great from the sixties up so close and personal. I read where he is going to do a short tour; catch him if you get the opportunity. You won't be disappointed.

Grateful Dead exhibit truckin' to New YorkA museum salutes the Dead with an exhibit full of band treasures.
By Josh Getlin / latimes.com
Even if you're a card-carrying Deadhead, your first response to the new exhibit of Grateful Dead history and memorabilia that opens Friday at the New-York Historical Society might be summed up in one word: Why?
Why, in an august building filled with busts and portraits of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Alexander Hamilton -- in New York's oldest museum, to be exact -- is there a room packed with posters from the Fillmore East, rock guitars, videos of kids lining up to buy concert tickets and tie-dyed T-shirts?
Sponsors of the colorful exhibit have no shortage of answers. And they were in a partying mood this week as they unveiled "The Grateful Dead: Now Playing at the New-York Historical Society," a roomful of treasures drawn from the band's archive, which it has donated to UC Santa Cruz.
The exhibition, which runs through July 4, shows that if the Bay Area "was the birthplace and heart of the band, the East Coast was the energizing center," said Christine Bunting, head of special collections and archives at UC Santa Cruz. "The band's links to New York were strong. They played here 155 times."
As she spoke, museum crews were preparing for an opening-night party featuring Santa Cruz wines and a Grateful Dead tribute band. The gift shop, normally top heavy with books about the Founding Fathers and New York history, was selling Summer of Love pillows and umbrellas festooned with peace signs.
"We're very interested in documenting not just the story of the band but the history of counterculture movements," said Debra Schmidt Bach, who along with fellow Historical Society curator Nina Nazionale helped organize the exhibit. "The idea is to bring you back in time but also to show how vital and important that history is for us today."
Or, as an unidentified youth says in a video about the group's fans: "The Dead, got to be the best, man. Wherever the Dead are, you'll see the people."
A visit begins with a grainy, blown-up photo advertising a 1969 Dead show at the Fillmore East. Nearby, Dennis Larkins and Peter Barsotti's iconic poster for the band's 1980 concerts at Radio Music Hall -- featuring two Grateful Dead skeletons, Sam and Samantha -- is one of many original artworks. Another photo memorializes the band's concert at Columbia University in May 1968, when a student strike had shut down the campus.
The group's West Coast roots are, of course, central to any retelling of the Grateful Dead story, and the exhibit is packed with California memorabilia. Glass cases display heartfelt fan letters and bootleg merchandise (a "Boogie til you Barf" bag with the band's logo) plus 1965 photos of the group in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district.
A handwritten notebook by renowned concert taper Dick Latvala states that a Dec. 30, 1978, Dead show at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion "is one of the finest audience recordings I know of." Internal documents show the evolution of the band's farsighted business practices, such as their decision to allow free taping and exchanges of live performances to build long-term fan loyalty.
This bond helped the band grow into a musical and merchandising powerhouse that quickly transcended its '60s trappings. Until leader Jerry Garcia died in 1995 and the group formally disbanded, the Dead was one of the most successful touring bands in history. Three decades after the group began, its following included politicians and celebrities along with millions of other loyal fans.
The Dead archive overflows with materials documenting this odyssey, and UC Santa Cruz officials were eager to get some items out to the public now. But Steele said it will take a long time to catalog the collection, much of which is temporarily stored in a large warehouse.
"Eventually, we'll house the materials in a new room at the main library and -- as we've promised the band -- the collection will be digitized so anyone, academics and fans alike, can have access to it," she added.
Some might have expected a California museum to get first crack at these items. But the New-York Historical Society won the nod and, in a twist that might have brought a smile to Garcia's eye, you can thank Henry Kissinger for it.
The former U.S. secretary of state delivered a talk last year at the museum and made repeated references to the enduring importance of the 1960s, especially as a key to understanding American history.
Officials began exploring ideas for an exhibit about that decade and believed they had found a perfect fit when news broke about the Dead's archive at Santa Cruz. It also helped that a former board member, Emmanuel Stern, had donated personal items to the collection and suggested that a museum show about the Dead and the '60s be assembled.
"We're not just talking about something that happened a long time ago," said Nazionale, pointing to a display of responses from Dead fans, who were surveyed after they viewed simulcasts of the Radio City Music Hall concerts. "Imagine, reaching out and polling your fans in 1980! It's so ahead of its time."

The Isle of Wight Festival is extremely proud to announce that the legendary McCartney will be headlining the Main Stage on Sunday 13 June bringing this year’s festival, which takes place from 11-13 June, to a spectacular close.
Renowned the world over, Paul McCartney awoke a generation giving a fresh sound to rock n’ roll, changing the face of music forever, first with The Beatles and then as a critically acclaimed solo artist. Across a career that has spanned over 30 years, he’s penned some of the most famous tracks ever written, including 'Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, 'Live and Let Die’ and 'I Saw Her Standing There’, meaning this year’s festival-goers will be in for something truly special as this living legend performs a rousing set.
Paul McCartney says: 'I always remember hearing such great things about this festival and it has such a sense of history with the likes of Jimi Hendrix playing there the first time round. This will be my first show on the Isle of Wight and I’m looking forward to a rollicking night of rock n’ roll'.
Festival promoter John Giddings adds: 'Forty years after Jimi Hendrix performed 'Hey Joe’ at Seaclose Park we’ve finally gotten to 'Hey Jude’. I can’t wait!'
Paul’s live shows have reached a new legendary status in recent years garnering unprecedented reviews from fans and critics alike wherever he goes. He’s pushed boundaries, performed to millions and made global news with monumental shows including performances in Red Square, Russia, outside the Coliseum in Rome, performing live to a NASA space station and the largest outdoor show ever in the Ukraine.
The UK got a recent taste for Paul’s live show last Christmas when he bought his 2009 'Good Evening Europe’ tour to a climatic and memorable finale at London’s 02 Arena, his only UK show of 2009. Reviews for the show were phenomenal and prove that Paul McCartney is a live experience that no one should miss.
This special show at the Isle of Wight Festival is part of Paul’s all new 'Up And Coming’ tour which starts in the US in March and comes to the UK and Ireland in June.
In addition to Paul McCartney, other world-class artists performing on Sunday’s Main Stage include Pink, Editors, Spandau Ballet and Friendly Fires. Across the course of the weekend over 45 acts will take to the stage including Jay-Z, Blondie, The Strokes, Florence + The Machine, Biffy Clyro, Crowded House, Paloma Faith, Mr. Hudson, Orbital, La Roux, Marina and the Diamonds and many more.

Jimmy Cliff Plans U.S., Canada Tour
Reggae great Jimmy Cliff embarks on his first extensive U.S. tour in 20, playing cities coast-to-coast as well as a few Canadian towns.
It’s looking like a great year for Cliff. The only living musician to hold Jamaica’s highest honor – the Order of Merit – will be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame by Wyclef Jean March 15.
But you can just add that to the long list of Cliff’s accomplishments, including his starring role as a musician turning to crime in the 1972 flick “The Harder They Come.” Other acting appearances included Cliff appearing in the roll of Ernest Reed in Harold Ramis’ 1986 film “Club Paradise,” which starred Robin Williams and Peter O’Toole.
Then there’s all those Jimmy Cliff songs recorded by major artists, such as Bruce Springsteen who recorded “Trapped,” Joe Cocker’s 1982 cover of “Many Rivers To Cross,” and New Order’sversion of “Vietnam” – a Cliff song Bob Dylan once called the best protest song he ever heard.
Cliff is currently wrapping up his first album of new material in six years, Existence. Writing on his Web site, Cliff said the new album is “almost finished except for some final production touches.”
Commenting about the tracks on Existence, Cliff said it took him two years to write the songs, saying, “I tried to touch all aspects of our existence, from global warming to starvation and moving to love and hope which are still alive and will always be here.”
Cliff launches his tour in Vienna, Va., at Filene Center At Wolf Trap June 11. Bonnaroo is next on the schedule, with Cliff performing at the annual festival located near Manchester, Tenn., June 12.
July 19 brings Cliff to Toronto and a gig at Massey Hall. Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Beach is slotted for July 24 and L.A.’s Hollywood Bowl will host the reggae master July 25.
Other shows include Detroit at Chene Park Aug. 5; Council Bluffs, Iowa, at Harrah’s Casino Aug. 8; Calgary at Jack Singer Concert Hall Aug. 10 and Edmonton at Winspear Centre Aug. 11.

OTIS TAYLOR WRITES HIS OWN HISTORYON NEW TELARC RECORDING
New album, ‘Clovis People,’ set for release on May 11
BOULDER, Colo. — Otis Taylor digs the past. Whether it’s the songs he wrote a decade ago, or ancient civilizations that lived more than 10,000 years ago, he’s drawn to stories from another time, and he’s compelled to retell them in a way that’s relevant in the modern day. On Clovis People, set for release May 11, 2010, on Telarc International, a division of Concord Music Group, Taylor writes his own history.
It’s the ideal project for the architect of a sparse and hypnotic style that has come to be known as “trance blues.” Taylor has spent his career crafting songs that are wide open to interpretation — thematically as well as structurally. “I give people a starting point, and then they can take it where they want to take it,” he explains. “That’s true for the people playing my music as well as the people listening to it. That’s how art should be. A person looking at a painting should be able to interpret it in whatever way he wants. The more words you put into a song, the less freedom the listener has to decide what it means.”
The album title is inspired by a recent scientific discovery very close to Taylor’s home in Boulder, Colorado. Barely 100 yards from the edge of his property, archeologists dug up a cache of tools and other implements belonging to a civilization known as the Clovis people, who walked the earth briefly about 13,000 years ago and then mysteriously disappeared.
“That’s amazing to me,” says Taylor. “There have only been four or five sites like this found all over the country. That means these people probably walked on my property. My music only goes back about ten years, but there’s something about reaching back to an earlier time and revisiting the stories of the past from a new perspective that I find compelling.”
Helping to shape that new perspective is a crew of players who lend a variety of shades and voices to the mix. Among them is guitarist Gary Moore, a guest musician on two of Taylor’s previous recordings (Definition of a Circle in 2007 and Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs in 2009), who moves in and out of the tracks with a hard riff here, a subtle accent there, and just the right atmospherics wherever he appears. Also on hand for nine of the twelve tracks is pedal steel guitarist Chuck Campbell — a member of the Campbell Brothers, the African-American gospel group that has developed a sound commonly known as “sacred steel.” In addition, Clovis People features cornetist Ron Miles and bassist Cassie Taylor (Otis’ 22-year-old daughter).
The set gets under way with the haunting “Rain So Hard,” a bluesy number that employs an intriguing mix of pedal steel, cornet and theremin as the backdrop to Taylor’s unsettling lyrics about a hard rain turning to snow and falling on a scene of betrayal and deceit.
“Little Willy” and “Lee and Arnez” are two previously unreleased songs. The former is a fictional tale of a school shooting — a song Taylor wrote in 1990s, but then shelved in the aftermath of the Columbine shooting of 1999. “Lee and Arnez” tells the story of a couple that Taylor remembers from the neighborhood where he grew up. “They were my parents’ best friends, and they had a boxer dog that I really loved,” says Taylor. “This would have been the 1950s, which were still a difficult time for black people, but I have great memories of this couple and their beautiful dog.”
“It’s Done Happened Again” is built on an urgent rhythm that plays like a frantic heartbeat. “The song is about that moment when someone who got his heart broken hears about someone else who got his heart broken,” says Taylor. “It’s that moment when pain and empathy converge, and you say, ‘Oh yeah, I know where he’s coming from.’”
“Harry Turn the Music Up” recalls Taylor’s memories of the Denver Folklore Center, a place he frequented when he was a boy in the early ’60s. “The song follows a groove that’s deep in the pocket, and it’s really powerful,” says Taylor. “The Denver Folklore Center was a place where nobody cared if you were black or white, skinny or fat. It was a place where everyone was accepted.”
“Babies Don’t Lie” rides on a single chord and speaks to the profound vulnerability of innocents. But somewhere underneath the simple and recurring lyrical line is the question of how and when dark forces take hold and turn some innocents into monsters.
“Think I Won’t” is a showdown-flavored track that captures the moment when a mother confronts a drug dealer in a schoolyard. “There are some badass moms out there,” says Taylor. “Sometimes people don’t realize how tough black women can be. It’s a matriarchal culture, and there are some moms who’ll kick your ass in a half-second if you threaten their children.”
Indeed, some instincts are eternal, whether the frame of reference is 2010, 1950 or some time before recorded history. Clovis People is in some respects a vehicle for Taylor — an archeologist of a different kind — to re-examine some of the truths he’s uncovered in his own era and preserve them for listeners in some future time.
“I went back to my musical past with these songs — all the way back to my first album,” says Taylor. “I like finding different ways to retell the old stories. They continue to mean something — to me, to the people who hear them, to the musicians who play with me — many years after I first told them.”

STONY PLAIN RECORDS ANNOUNCES APRIL 6 RELEASE DATE FOR JEFF HEALEY’S
LAST CALL JAZZ/SWING CD
JEFF HEALEY AND THE JAZZ WIZARDS CONCERT DVD, BEAUTIFUL NOISE,
WILL ALSO BE RELEASED BY STONY PLAIN IN CANADA AND MVD ENTERTAINMENT GROUP IN THE U.S.
EDMONTON, AB – Stony Plain Records announces an April 6 release date in the U.S. and Canada for Jeff Healey’s final jazz studio album,Last Call, which showcases the beloved legendary musician performing the music that was his true passion in life: the classic jazz, swing and pop sounds of the 1920s-1940s. Released with the participation and support of Jeff Healey’s widow, Cristie, Last Call is a 14-track collection on which Healey plays multi-tracked guitar parts, trumpet and sings. On several of the songs, he’s accompanied by Ross Wooldridge on piano and clarinet and Drew Jurecka on violin.
Concurrent with this CD in Canada, Stony Plain will also release, Beautiful Noise, a concert DVD featuring Jeff Healey and The Jazz Wizards, his regular jazz performance band, originally recorded for the Toronto-based TV show, “A Beautiful Noise,” in January, 2006. In the U.S., the Beautiful Noise DVD will be released on March 23 and distributed by MVD Entertainment Group.
Last Call was Jeff’s last jazz/swing recording before his death in March, 2008 of cancer. Mess of Blues, an album of his fan-favorite blues and roots songs released shortly after he passed away, won the Blues Award for “Best Rock/Blues Release” in 2009; and the Songs from the Road live CD, released in September of 2009, won the “Recording of the Year” at the 2010 Maple Blues Awards.
Last Call was recorded and mixed by long-time Healey friend and bandmate, Alec Fraser, and the package includes extensive liner notes by Colin Bray. The album features swing guitar instrumentals first recorded by Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti, to interpretations of songs originally done by Fats Waller, Sidney Bechet and Hoagy Carmichael. The material ranges from such standards as “Deep Purple,” “Pennies from Heaven” and “Autumn in New York,” to more obscure songs from the past, including “I’m Holding My Honey’s Hand” and “You Can’t Pull the Wool Over My Eyes.”
Jeff Healey even covers some tunes originally heard during the golden age of cinema, including “Hong Kong Blues” and the haunting them from the motion picture, “Laura.”
The new CD also includes a bonus video of “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” that is playable on most computers, recorded live at Healey’s Roadhouse inToronto on July 21, 2007.
The Beautiful Noise concert DVD features 11 tracks with the Jazz Wizards complete six-piece lineup, none of which are included on Last Call, plus an additional interview and musical footage. Beautiful Noise was directed by Daniel K. Berman and produced by Daniel K. Berman and Paul McNulty.

SUSAN COWSILL’S NEW ALBUM ‘LIGHTHOUSE’ FINDS LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
Special guests include Jackson Browne, The Cowsills (Bob, Paul and John), Vicki Peterson (Bangles/Continental Drifters) and session ace Waddy Wachtel
NEW ORLEANS, La. — Lighthouse, Susan Cowsill’s second solo album, once again embodies the timeless qualities of heart, soul and craft that are already known to anyone familiar with Cowsill’s solo debut Just Believe It. The new album is slated for May 18, 2010 release on Threadhead Records.
Susan first entered the pop-culture spotlight at the age of eight, as the youngest member of the ’60s musical family the Cowsills. In adulthood, as a member of the beloved alt-pop supergroup the Continental Drifters, she reemerged as a vocalist and songwriter of remarkable depth and insight. In 2005, Susan made an inspired solo debut with Just Believe It. But the album’s creative triumph was overshadowed by the intrusion of real-life events — namely the deaths of Susan’s brothers Billy and Barry, and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which temporarily displaced Susan and her family from her adopted hometown of New Orleans.
“Lighthouse was written over the last four years during our recovery from Hurricane Katrina,” she says. “As you might guess, the songs on this record are pulled from the very deep well of this most life changing experience. Having lost 99.9% of our material and emotional belongings, and one whole human being, my brother Barry Cowsill, there was much to say and feel and express. It has taken all this time to pull ourselves back together to even be able to form comprehensible sentences never mind full on songs.”
She adds, “I would say that the music on this record is best described as songs about the loss of a world and a lifetime that no longer exists. It is about the uncertainty of the days, weeks and months that were ahead of us. And at the same time, it is the music of hope and faith and survival. The renewal of our city, our families and most importantly our souls.”
The tribulations of the past few years resonate throughout Lighthouse. Cowsill’s new songs reflect the hard-won lessons of her recent experiences, while maintaining the unmistakable sense of optimism and spirituality that’s always been at the heart of her work. That indomitable spirit is reflected in the infectious grit of such emotionally vivid originals as “ONOLA,” “Sweet Bitter End,” “The Way That It Goes” and “Avenue of the Indians,” which features guest vocals by longtime friend and admirer Jackson Browne.
In addition to Susan’s own compositions, Lighthouse includes an impassioned reading of the late Barry Cowsill’s “River of Love,” which features soaring harmonies by Susan’s brothers Bob, Paul and John Cowsill, as well as sister-in-law (and Bangles/Continental Drifters member) Vicki Peterson, and renowned session guitarist Waddy Wachtel, who began his career playing with the Cowsills in the 1960s. Another highlight is a distinctive, stripped-down reworking of the Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb classic “Galveston,” which demonstrates Susan’s status as a peerless interpretive singer.
Cowsill further explains, “Going through Katrina was most certainly like experiencing a death. The time in between the storm and the making of Lighthouse was the grieving period, and the recording of the music was the funeral, laying it all to rest, saying goodbye, and starting over.
“So here we are, in our new world. And this world is filled with beauty and light and excitement, and the new found knowledge that the present is really all that we have, because everything can change in the blink of an eye . . .hey . . .that sounds like a song comin’ on . . . gotta go!”

JOHNNY MOELLER WANTS TO
BLOO-GA-LOO YOU ON NEW CD COMING APRIL 20 FROM SEVERN RECORDS
LABEL DEBUT FROM FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS GUITARIST FEATURES SPECIAL GUESTS, KIM WILSON AND
LOU ANN BARTON
SEVERN, MD – Severn Records announces an April 20 release date for BlooGaLoo,
the label debut from Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist Johnny Moeller, which features special guests Kim Wilson, Lou Ann Barton and Shawn Pittman. The solid core band for the sessions includes Matt Farrell on piano and organ, Steve Gomes on bass and Rob Stupka on drums. Other guests include Gary Clark Jr. and Mike Barfield, among others. Severn Records is distributed in the U.S. by City Hall Records.
Austin-based Moeller, who leads his own band in addition to playing guitar in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, has crafted an album in BlooGaLoo that plays to his amazing versatility as a guitarist, playing wailing single notes as well as well as groovy, funky New Orleans inspired rhythms that recall one of his influences, the great Earl King. Moeller includes his own take on two classic King songs, “Trick Bag” (imagine a funky, Dylan-esque lead vocal and you’ve got some idea) and “Everybody’s Got to Cry Sometime.”
“This guy’s a monster and should be recognized as one of the world’s top musicians,” says someone who should know: legendary T-Bird founder/singer/harmonica master Kim Wilson, who adds his vocal and harp magic on two tracks of BlooGaLoo. The First Lady of Texas blues and soul, Lou Ann Barton adds her trademark vocals on two songs; and fellow guitarslinger Shawn Pittman shows he’s no slouch in the vocal department when he sings lead on the truly funky – and fun – Moeller original, “I’m Movin’ on Up.”
Throughout BlooGaLoo, Johnny Moeller demonstrates his mastery on guitar, knowing when to blast off and when to lay back in the groove and let it flow. His guitar playing is full of voodoo and lightning. The floating bent notes, delicately singing phrases, bursts of staccato picking and ringing piano-like chords that he sculpts into vibrant solos bring all the beauty, power and mystery of the blues to life. Moeller shows he can go old-school, too, with his Texas blues treatment of Earl Hooker’s “Tease Me Baby,” which closes the album.
Influenced by such other Lone Star six-stringers as Albert Collins, Lightnin’ Hopkins and the Vaughan brothers, Moeller is still his own man. “I’ve never really tried to emulate anybody else,” he explains. “I have my own thing, which is blues based, and I like to mix in everything else I love: soul, jazz, funk and rock ‘n’ roll.”
Over the last several years, Moeller has also lent his talents to a number of fellow Severn Records artists, including albums from Darrell Nulisch, Lou Pride, Steve Guyger and others. In addition to BlooGaLoo, he’s released two previous solo albums: The Return of the Funky Worm in 1996 and Johnny Blues Aggregation in 2001.

*** PUNMASTER'S TRIVIA CORNER ***
The trivia question from the last MusicWire was:
A former picture framer, he was offered a job as a harmonica player and second vocalist in the band after the current singer stormed off the stage and said "I'm the lead vocalist, no-one else is singing." Soon after the band leader along with the new hire and the remnants of his band (named after a song from an American artist) cut their first 45 for United Artists, a reprise of a blues song, though the uncredited "new hire" was heard duetting with the band leader only on the B-side, an uproarious version of a spiritual.
Name the band and the "new hire" to win!
Good luck...

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I know who this is but I am afraid I can't give a complete answer. "Named after a song from an American artist" suggests a non-US band probably British so I reckon Rod Stewart is the picture framing harmonica player. I can't think what the band would have been though.
Rog (in Scotland)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rod Stewart was the new recruit into the Hoochie Koochie Men, fronted by Long John Baldry after Alexis Korner's departure. The "B" side duet was a version of "Up Above My Head," inspired by the Sister Rosetta Tharpe/Marie Knight version
Or, maybe, it was someone else.
Todd Everett
------------------------------------------------------------------------
That would be Rod Stewart, who joined Long John Baldry and the Hoochie Coochie Men in 1964. His first recording with them was the Rosetta Tharpe gospel song, "Up Above My Head"........... who coulda guessed that would eventually lead to "Hot Legs"?
Tim Bernett

------------------------------------------------------------------------
David,
This is a tough question, but I know I have heard this story before, maybe just it’s just too convoluted for me to remember. Rod Steward did about everything and he is the only picture framer I can think of. He did play the harmonica in the per-Kinks group but that did not last too long. Then they bounced him out of the Dimensions. This is where I get a little fuzzy; didn’t he join “the Cyril Davies All stars” as a harmonica player just before Davies died? Then Long John Baltry (answer to a previous trivia question) took over and formed the “Hoochie Coochie Men” with the remnants including Rod on harmonica. I think they recorded “Hoochie Coochie man” and must have put a gospel tune on the B-side.
I will be interested to see if this one gets by!
Best regards,
Butch Moncla
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dave,
That would be Rod " The Mod " Stewart. The band was the Hoochie Coochie Men formerly the Cyril Davies All- Stars.
